hey everyone--the latest proposal passed with a majority vote. any player who opts out of the 2020 season can be cut without a cap penalty. this doesn't change anything for a player who tests positive for COVID and is out for part of the season. those situations are treated just like regular injuries, unless the player then decides to skip the entire season.
-
Yeah, about that happy opening day: https://twitter.com/JeffPassan/status/1286365378067783683
-
and happy opening day everyone! i hope you're all staying safe and doing as well as possible under the circumstances. i'm still in for the charity bet this year.
-
we have 8 votes in on the latest survey--let's get to all 12. please vote ASAP.
-
yes: https://community.ottoneu.com/t/covid-19-changes-for-the-2020-mlb-season/7611
-
Doesn't Ottoneu enforce games and innings limits? According to my daily lineup it's 60 games and 560 IP.
-
I'm personally in favor of this proposal. It's easy to administer and seems to make things more fair for this season.
-
new survey: please vote ASAP. https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/5KTPSWT
-
yeah, frankly i don't see why anyone would be against that.
-
that sounds good to me. i can circulate another poll.
-
Shite I don't know how I missed that. For some reason I thought Price was rostered at like 3 bucks. Maybe the stipulation should be if you want to drop an opt-out guy you can recoup 100 percent of his salary?
-
Great respect for any player within the next 48 hours who utters the words, "Okay, let's get this shit show on the road."
-
Price at $29 is the big issue.
-
Yeah, Kopech is rostered for $8, which I'm assuming is the highest salary among opt-players. Salary relief involving such low salaries doesn't seem to be worth the bother.
-
there doesn't seem to be a ton of support for salary relief from survey monkey: 3 votes for salary relief and 4 against.
-
here's the list of opt outs as of today: Mike Leake, Diamondbacks
Ryan Zimmerman, Nationals
Joe Ross, Nationals
Ian Desmond, Rockies
Tyson Ross, free agent (per MLB Network's Jon Heyman)
Welington Castillo, Nationals
David Price, Dodgers
Felix Hernandez, Braves
Nick Markakis, Braves
Hector Noesi, Pirates
Buster Posey, Giants
Michael Kopech, White Sox
Jordan Hicks, Cardinals
-
Who's even opted out other than Posey and Price? Anyone else who would be rostered in Ottoneu?
-
we could change the proposal to that, but i'd be concerned that there could be COVID-related missed seasons that aren't properly classified. it would be easier to administer, though.
-
i.e. had the "OPTOUT" designation on Ottoneu.
-
OK, yeah, I see the fundamental confusion. I assumed we were only talking about players who had officially opted out and we're 100% out for the season.
-
if anyone doesn't like the options i put forward in the survey, please let me know or just suggest an alternative here on the message board. we're currently at 5 total responses, and we'll need a majority of the league to vote in favor of any rule changes.
-
but i think if we do have some sort of salary relief, it can't be limited to players on the official COVID list--for the reasons astudillo set out. but then i also don't know how to apply it consistently vis-a-vis players who have ordinary bumps and bruises for short IL stints.
-
i guess i was thinking that we’d apply it to people who are expected to miss the entire season, and then withdraw the relief if the player comes back. but i think it’s just too much to manage it fairly and consistently.
-
I have at least two other players who are likely on the IL due to COVID (since their teams won't disclose the reason for their IL stint), but of course they aren't designated as such by Ottoneu. If they go through with the season, this is going to happen a ton. Still not sure there's any good options for us as a league to legislate this.
-
Now I'm confused. What's the point of salary relief if it's only for players who miss the season? Like, Austin Meadows is said to have COVID-19, but whether he's asymptomatic or whatever won't be publicly disclosed. He could be back in two weeks or he could be seriously ill. There are so many unknowns as well as confidentiality issues with this. We're not going to know who misses the season until the season is over and the player didn't play. Are you saying we apply the salary relief to 2021?
-
chuck--it looks like my earlier response didn't post. i think we're all on board with ditching the arbitration coupons and the IP/GP targets for this year.
-
here's a surveymonkey: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/8BVJZW2
-
i think anything else would be too tricky to administer and lead to too many grey areas.
-
just so we're all on the same page about the proposal: any relief would only apply to any player who doesn't play for the entire season, right? and also, it would apply to any player who doesn't play in 2020, regardless about whether we can verify a connection to COVID-19 or not, right?
-
unless anyone feels strongly about it, i think we just ditch the arb coupons and volume targets for this season.
-
How are we doing innings requirements no way we hit 1500 innings . Thanks Chuck

And the primary benefit of having a salary floor for COVID-19 players is it would reduce the manual efforts the commissioner will have to make adjusting salaries.
-
Actually I think 50 percent is an optimum number, if only because it parallels with Ottoneu as far as dropping players in-season; you recoup half his salary.
-
I'm not sure. Maybe just split the difference at 50 percent, and have a floor (say, $20) to even be eligible? The thing is, I have Meadows down, and that sucks, but his salary is only $10. Carrying that number doesn't hurt me or anyone; it's the production that I'll be missing. It's really only the star players with substantial Ottoneu salaries that require actual cap relief.
-
think we need some relief it is only going to get worse with more players going down with COVID-19 . Thanks Chuck

We seem to have people who feel strongly about having some relief, and others that feel strongly about not having 100% relief. Maybe it makes sense to vote between two levels? i.e. 25% reduction and 75% reduction?
-
Preseason 2012, I had a keeper league team with a lot of SP prospect depth that needed an elite RP. So I traded away Zach Britton and a couple draft picks for Daniel Bard. Baseball is funny that way.
-
Yeah, I already checked.
-
Shh. Now I can't sneakily pick him up. He's not even in the player pool.
-
In the midst of this crapstorm, a pretty weird (but in a good way) story. Daniel Bard is back: https://www.mlb.com/news/daniel-bard-rockies-comeback
-
Ha! That didn't take long. Puig tests positive for Covid19. Braves cancel the contract. Laughing at my luck, not Puig catching a serious illness. Still, I'm not sure many people are surprised.
-
yeah, that makes some sense and would be a lot easier for me. we can still put it to a vote, though. i'll circulate a surveymonkey early next week.
-
Well, at least I got Puig!!!!!!!!
-
I'm new to this, so am happy to defer to everyone else's expertise. But to me, it seems that when a player opts out, they are not playing because of a medical issue, so the most appropriate thing to do is treat it exactly like we would treat a 60-day IL.

No matter what, I feel pretty strongly it shouldn't be $0. If the opt-out player is good enough -- say, Bregman, in my case -- I'd retain him for 2021 at his full salary, no-brainer. So Bregman sits and I get $36 extra to play with? $36 is so valuable in Ottoneu, even in this absurdly truncated season. While I don't believe owners with key opt-out players should be punished for that, I'd argue setting their salaries to $0 would constitute a reward. That isn't right, either.
-
OK, I thought about this a bit more for my other league, and I don't feel that strongly about whether they go to $0. I think the argument against it is: you could end up with such inflated salaries that no one picked up for the rest of 2020 will be remotely keepable. So from a keeper perspective it's like saying, 2020 is a wash, pretend it didn't happen, keep your players from 2019. But maybe that's fine?
-
ok, we can wait. my reasoning for favoring a $0 salary is that it doesn't seem fair to put someone in the bind of potentially keeping some big salaries on the books for 2020 as total dead weight, or cutting a franchise cornerstone. it's a global pandemic and things are already tough for everyone. i don't want this season to ruin the league for anyone.
-
I guess I don't quite get the reasoning for reduced salaries. Why not just freeze their salary?
-
Well like I said, my opinion on temporary salary adjustments definitely changes based on who is sitting out. We should be able to give this at least another week before settling on anything.
-
ok, i can set up a survey monkey for a vote. so far it sounds like we have three options: set salaries to $0, 20% discount, and no discount. any other proposals?
