The Celtics overachieved and took advantage of some bad play and resting (nights off) by good teams down the stretch. I don't think anyone who know's anything about basketball thought the Celts would be anything better than a 3 seed when the season started, and that would be a success! Like I said, Ainge would've loved to have Butler, but the cost it would have taken to get him would've been counter productive to the rebuild. Would I like to see them win? Yes. Do I think they can? Not this year.
-
Like I said, GOAT. We're all just biding time till round 3 of the Bron v Bay tilt.

Maybe I don't take your point Lou, but Paul's statement re: fiscal responsibility is a position conditioned entirely on stats (ones with dollar signs in front of them). I do welcome the admission by both of you, though, that you're okay watching the Cs get bounced in the first round by the Bulls just to be spared from getting trucked by LeBron & Co. You really wouldn't rather see them beaten by the best?
-
It's nice to see someone make a statement that isn't based solely on stats. I agree with prestige and the celtics will be better off in the long run by acting the way they are.
-
Ainge is being fiscally responsible. It wasn't just the draft pick that didn't get them Butler, it was the price of the periphery players going with the draft pick that didn't make sense. Also, Boston has a max contract to use next season on a big time player who may fit better in this system.
-
Lou, you're watching closer than I am: is Hoiberg out-coaching Stevens? I know the cult of Brad is approaching Popovichian levels so I don't mean to take the piss entirely, but... Bulls fans wanted (maybe still want?) Hoiberg fired. I'm more of a players >>> coaches so for me it's more about Wade and Rondo being playoff blooded.
-
The Eastern conference is Cleveland and everyone else. After the Cavs you could take anyone of the east playoff teams and they are all the same. It doesn't matter what the stats say all you have to do is watch the games. Unless one of the east teams plays smothering D and doesn't give second chance opportunities to the Cavs it'll be Cleveland in the finals again
-
It's gotta kill to see Butler-Rondo-Wade doing this to them though right? If Ainge hadn't been so stubborn about discussing the Nets' picks then Butler is probably in Celtic green.
-
Aaron Hernandez ruined so many lives and hurt so many people. Maybe wherever he is now if there is an afterlife, he will change for the better.
-
Eh... and this is so my data driven brethren might also be drawn into the convo, but fivethrityeight's ELO ratings had the Celtics twice as likely to win the title and just south of that for the EC flag. Granted that also had the Bulls rated as the third best team in the East thanks to their hot finish. So maybe it's all just bad timing? Pacers rated 4th by a hair though...
-
The celtics can't rebound and it's killing them as I thought it would once the playoffs started. The thing that is surprising me about them is how poorly they are taking care of the ball. You can't turn the ball over like that and expect to win in the playoffs.
I still believe they can turn it around and make this a series, even possibly win it. But it starts with taking care of the ball, busting your but on defense & the boards.
-
Not panicking...but I'm surprised they're gonna lose in the first. Figured they'd lose in the 2nd round. Somehow they were the number 1 seed in the middle of an unfinished rebuild.
-
Celtics' fans in the house: please rate your panic on a scale of 1-10, with a 10 being you may have seriously secretly considered arson on the Ritz.

Kings of Crash's trade block has been updated!

Cali's Anti-Fun's trade block has been updated!

And props to commish Paul for the NBA MVP debate fuel, but there was a major typo in the bleacher report article you linked. For some reason they forgot to put LeBron James in the tables. Should probably leave a comment to let them know huh?
-
I get it, no dongs since the weekend, but why you gotta hate on Tebow like that Jimmy? You want THIS as the face of your franchise right? https://milb.bamcontent.com/assets/images/7/1/2/223828712/cuts/Tebow_Tim_1683_Priddy_0rayf76k_c0kqxzey.jpg

On a fantasy baseball note, if anyone is looking to add some top prospects, feel free to send me some trade offers. Looking to add some quality MLB players (preferably SS/MI/SP)

The media talked a ton about Westbrook and his last triple double but they didn't mention one word about Harden and his quadruple double. Like I said before everybody overlooks turnovers. MVPs don't turn the ball over like they do.
-
Yes! And very well, I'll ground it (i.e. MVP talk) just a bit so no one loses an eye. What I thought was interesting was that it sounded like Harden's quote may have been referencing the win shares statistic. I think Westbrook will win the award and deserves it (LeBron caveat aside), but Harden's point ("I thought winning was what this is about") is sound. Whether win shares actually measures that, well...
-
Bidding for Tebow has started. Please don't start the NBA MVP talk again, I got noticeably dumber after the last discussion (Hence me bidding on Tebow)
-
Two very important matters to be addressed: 1) Why haven't any of you started the Tebow auction yet? He's in the ottoneu pool so no excuses. 2) Westbrook sets the trip-dub record; Harden says he thought it was about the wins. Rockets-Thunder first round! And not a single mention of Kawhi Leonard anywhere. Hot takes please.
-
Exactly! That's a little known secret implication of ottoneu lineup setting. Bravo for picking up on that and putting in for the Mariners' cause.
-
Perfect - thanks Chris! If I use all their eligibility by the ASB they are also no longer allowed to play in real-world AL West games, right? Because that's a sword I'm willing to fall on.
-
Chris, see this post from Community:
http://community.ottoneu.com/t/two-c-slots/1473
If you can't click the link, the rule is if you have a guy in one of the active C spots and games available under the position cap then those stats count. Even if a guy just pinch hits it "costs" a game. You've used up 7 catcher games to this point (4 Vogt, 3 McCann), and at that rate you'll be capped out there by the ASB. They're catchers and there are injuries so maybe not though?
-
Dumb question that I should have clarified before the end of week 1 - only the stats for the 1st C slot count right? The rules say that the 2nd slot is for platooning - how does that work? I think I'm setting my lineup correctly for C but want to make sure I'm not missing out on those sweet, sweet Stephen Vogt dingers
-
Pitchers hitting stats should definitely count!
-
I mean, we gotta get ready for the Shohei Otani revolution stateside anyway... wonder what the NPB fantasy baseball leagues are doing with that one?
-
Yep, just want to reiterate, pitcher hitting stats should totally count. Are you with me? You're all with me, right?
-
But back to baseball: pitcher hitting stats should totally count in our game just like the real one. Major pet peeve of mine forever. And the October teams will be: BAL/CLE/HOU with BOS/Angels WC; WAS/CHI/LA with MIA/STL WC.
-
Also fun to note the players are the same height but 10 lbs heavier these days, but that's by the by. So what's better: tough defense, making the extra pass, taking the 15 footer, cleaning that offensive glass? Or maybe it's more 3s and dribble drives, being athletic on D without mugging your man?
-
Lou specifically mentioned the Westhead Nuggets, so focus on the early 90s for the comparison point I think is interesting (specifically 91-92 but I mean that as an exemplar for "80s era" ball vs this season as "millennial style"). Note the similar offensive rating and pace of play. Where these seasons really diverge is in the shot selection, type of rebounding, assists, and fouls v turnovers.
-
And while Chris was doing the lord's work with his objectively measured arguments, I think Lou's objections to modern NBA basketball writ large are more stylistic. And, you can dive into that with the numbers! Not that you can't all competently use BBRef, but looking at this table over there is fascinating (just the league averages for the box score stats, so the numberphobic may proceed):

Happy (true) opening day everyone! I seem to have missed a rollicking NBA MVP convo, to which I'll add an ancillary post in a moment. I will resist Jim's attempt to troll me by calling Kevin Love the CAVS most valuable player. You Celtics fans just can't let it go that he's much better off with his rings (it will be plural) in Cleveland.
-
Gotta say - fishy that I've got the MLB HR leader on my roster and currently am showing 0 HR in the standings. Might need to email FG support to see if that's an error.
-
Nats closer Blake Treinen is on the trade block
-
Leonard comes up huge for the Spurs. Once again the media bowing down to Westbrook. He another triple double but nobody mentions he had 8 turnovers that contributed very heavily to the loss. This message is paid for by the Leonard for MVP & the Westbrook for player of the year party

I'm not the one who started the insults I'm just defending myself. I just wanted to voice my opinion on NBA MVP. You guys took it to a new level. You all need to lighten up and have fun.
-
In (more relevant) baseball news. Let's get some division predictions: I'll take Red Sox/Indians/Mariners/Astros/Blue Jays and Nationals/Cubs/Dodgers/Mets/Rockies (this is the year the Giants' lack of offense catches up to them). It won't matter for the playoffs, but I think the Dodgers end up with the top record in baseball.
-
A) All three of us are also new and inherited a roster B) Your political shtick is pretty tired - I'd encourage you to drop it as it's not a good look for anyone C) That's the great thing about stats - you can know them inside and out and baseball (and basketball) will still surprise you! D) Best of luck this year to you Homers! E) I now REALLY hope we get to see a SAS-OKC playoff game
-
You guys know your stats. You must win this league every year. I just hope to compete with a roster I had to inherit
-
Like I said before Jordan didn't win until Bird was hurting and ready to retire. e careful on the highway some people don't stop
-
The difference is they are allowed to play zones now.
-
Honest question - if defense is so bad why is this only like the 33rd highest scoring regular season since that BBref has on record? PPG was consistently higher throughout the 80s and 90s. It seems like the most obvious explanation is that offense has gotten better (since players have gotten better) but defense has kept up, or even surpassed, that rate of improvement. Could it be that defense is better in less obvious ways (better rotation, better scheme, etc)?
