Flying Squirrels had Guyer at a $2 cap penalty. By re-signing him at $2 and immediately cutting him, he reduced his cap penalty to $1. If you cut an expensive player, after 30 days you can cut the cap penalty in half this way.
-
Just out of curiosity, what's with bidding on players then immediately cutting them? It's worth a dollar to keep someone else from having Brandon Guyer? What am I missing?

And I am kicking myself that a $7 Aaron Judge was in my last round of cuts before the draft. Never thought he would get his strikeouts under control. Totally missed that one.

Looks like Judge was well worth that $13. Nice call Spa City!

Only 30 minutes left to get your bids in on J.P. Crawford!!!

Alright, you got me.
-
That said, in all seriousness, Jung Ho Kang is probably coming back any day, and he is a steal at his price tag. My comment has nothing (i.e. everything) to do with the cap penalty.
-
Alright, but when he goes all Francisco Lindor on the NL next year, you heard it here first. (As an aside, I was kidding about Crawford. I thought everybody knew I was joking about trying to shed the cap penalty. No facetiousness font on my keyboard.)
-
Another use car sales job on a jalopy. Also another note on Crawford that further supports Flying Squirrels mention of this stat line, the team that he plays for has a slash line of .265/.316/.436. If Crawford is such a stud, why don't keep him? You have the roster room. I hope you guys realize that all these free agent bids are Spa City's and he'll try to pawn them off on another owner on some bogus 3 for 1 deal again.
-
True - on a .248 BABIP. On the other hand his BB% is very high (as always), his K% is very low (as always) and in 2 seasons at AA his wOBA was .348 &.369. Now his bat is coming around at AAA. If he was in the amateur draft this year, he would be the #1 pick. Seems like a player rebuilding teams would want to stash - if he doesn't pan out, what do you lose? A couple dollars you probably aren't using anyway. Just my two cents.
-
He also has a slash line of .208/.327/.280
-
Any fans of elite-level shortstop prospects? If so, JP Crawford has 8 hits in his last 20 at bats, with 5 walks, 2 doubles, and a HR. This has nothing to do with the $5 cap penalty I am on the hook for - just saying he is turning it on in the minors and he could be yours for a mere $5 :)
-
The main problem is that Tyler Anderson pitches in Colorado. Has there been any one pitcher in the history of the Rockies that has made a good career in terms of Fangraphs points?
-
Tyler Anderson is an interesting pitcher, but due to his apparent love of allowing HRs, he has made the least of his two stints as a Thoroughbreds starter. I had to let him go... Again.
-
I was a bit perplexed over the lack of mlb in Tyson Ross. The Cubs were hot after him last year, and showed little to no interest this offseason. I thought he was going to get a $30m 2 year contract or something like that. The fact that he signed a 1 yr $6m contract was very telling to me.
-
Before his surgery he scored over 1000 points 2 years in a row, if he can get back near what he was he will be worth it.
-
Nice games by Lester and Kershaw. $11 for Tyson Ross??!!!

In this league, Bartolo Colon is at $7, Julio Teheran is $13, and 27 year-old rookie Zach Godley just went for $3. I don't see what those guys can do that Leake can't do better. Leake does not throw the trendy mid-90s 4-seamer, so his K% is low by 2017 standards. But he also avoids HRs & walks, unlike the 4-seam flame-throwers. I hate the Reds (of course.. who doesn't?) but I kind of like Leake.
-
Reaches 94mph? What on your radar gun? 5.3% of Leakes' pitches this year are fastballs with an average velocity of 90.3mph. 70% of his pitches this year were cutters and sinkers at an average 90mph. 9.4% were change ups, at 85.7 mph. Not much of a change up, in fact how can one really tell the difference? Not exactly changing speeds if you ask me. His big difference for this year is his HR/9 which is at .59, one half of his career average. I expect that will change.
-
Leake's fastball reaches 94 mph. I think he gets a soft-tosser label because he throws a lot of off-speed pitches (which I think is a good thing) - not because he lacks velocity. There are pitchers on rosters in this league at way higher salaries who will never be as good as Leake. Are you sure you don't hate him b/c he was a Cardinal?
-
But... Eric Thames is now officially an outfielder, so I got that going for me, which is nice.
-
Negative 5 points of offense last night. Fun times.
-
I could hit the ball off that soft-tosser. I'm not a mean reversion guy, at all, but Leake will revert to his mean.

Just my $.02, but Mike Leake was great (again) last night. I traded him a day too early.
-
That being said, Syndergaard, Familia, Kopech, Puk, Giolito are available. I need quality innings now.
-
Speaking of prospects, the great Greg Bird and AJ Reed are available to the highest bidder. The future is now for the Thoroughbreds; 2018 is next year's problem.
-
Flint should do so just to even out his Votto and Chapman trade for pennies on the dollar last year around this time.
-
I predict Spa City's next move will be to pick up two prospects and then in two weeks will trade them to Flint for Stanton, with a loan, of course.
-
Small sample size on the 5.22 and 5.69 pts/ip on Leake and Lorenzen. Career pts/ip on each respectively is 3.80 and 3.60.
-
11 Strikeouts for Berrios today. However, my entire offense might end the day negative.

Spa City is partially right. My other bias against Torres is that he shot up the prospect boards right after the Cubs traded him to the Yankees. Here is Chicago, we regarded Torres as a good prospect, but not that great on a relative basis. He did have a great stint in the AFL, which is a good accomplishment, but it is a small sample size statistically. I think Torres could be a decent hitter, not a good base stealer, and not a good fielder.
-
Torres has a .846 OPS at Trenton with a 138 wRC+ and .381 wOBA. 21 SB in 125 games in '16 & 22 SB in 119 games in '15. He is hitting for power, stealing bases, drawing walks, making consistent contact as a 20 year old at AA. And he should be eligible at SS/2B/3B/MI/Util next year. I am marketing him so I might be biased. But Winnetka might be trying to limit his trade value (as I also would be doing - I don't blame him). Regardless, he is available.
-
Winnetka Cubs's trade block has been updated!
-
Torres may be a future all star, but only because he plays in New York.
-
I would be totally okay with it if you didn't keep it up Spa City.
-
Total non sequitur... Gleyber Torres has a wOBA of .384 with a BB% of 11.4 and a K% of only 14.8, with 2 HRs in his last 3 games with Trenton. Just in case anybody wants to add a future all star SS to their roster, Torres is available in the right deal.
-
One thing I realized in Vibber's article is that my pitching needs improvement. If anybody decides to rebuild by trading higher-priced players, especially SP, I am interested in buying.
-
Thanks Squirrels and Nimrods. I'll try to keep it up. Vibber's monthly updates are fun. Our league looks like we could make the top 10 most competitive leagues this year.
-
I see someone is bidding on Dominic Smith. Good luck with that one.
-
Nice work Spa City! Number 1 offense in the top 10 as well.
