6 man rotation might be a good idea for them. Ohtani is coming off an injury and he has never thrown more than 160 innings. Richards, Skaggs, Shoemaker, Ramirez and Meyer all have injury histories, and Bridwell has never thrown more than 150 innings. Still... Ohtani adds a good (maybe great) SP and a good (maybe very good) hitter for league minimum salary. There is almost no possibility this works out poorly for the Angels.
-
The Angels are probably dying to implement a 6-man rotation, seeing as how most of their current starters' have experienced some form of arm trouble in the not-so-distant past. Looks like a 140-160 innings window max for all LAA SP's.
-
I would have guessed Dodgers. But I can see the allure of playing with the greatest player of the generation in Anaheim... Sorry, I mean "Los Angeles of Anaheim".
-
Breaking News: Ohtani has chosen! He is signing with the Angels.
-
I am surprised nobody is interested in Freddy Freeman, Aaron Judge, Steven Strasburg or my other higher-priced players... You could knock me out of contention for next year, and add clearly under-priced players. I am not looking to give them away, but they should at least be worth negotiating to see if there are deals to be made. Trade talks are what the Hot Stove Season was made for.
-
Ah I see yeah that seems insane. I'm not sure why he pushed him up from 43rd to 26th in the last month? As for bold prediction though, I mean they're BOLD prediction they are supposed to be crazy so I don't think they are a good way to judge someone. I also am a huge Paul Sporer fan though, he is my favorite writer and podcast host.

Where do you see Samardzija at 24th? Looking at his most recent rankings he has Samadzija at 43rd in the 4th tier of pitchers.
-
He has Samardzija at 26th, enough said about Sporer.

Paul still ranked him above some really good guys (Berrios, Wood, Hill, Godly, Fulmer). That still makes him very valuable at 23.
-
Sporer tends to not like curveball heavy guys. I think its reasonable to rank him around there until we actually see him do something. I bet he ends up being closer to a top 25 guy, but I understand ranking him down there until we actually see him pitch in the MLB.
-
Paul Sporer just ranked Ohtani as a low third tier SP, lower than Garrett Richards and barely ahead of Chase Anderson. Sporer said he did not see much difference between Ohtani and the #50 pitcher (Kyle Hendricks) or the #60 pitcher (Dinelson Lamet). I don't know... I tend to over rate curveball pitchers - probably because I have never been able to figure out how to throw a decent one, so it seems like magic. But I thought Ohtani would wind up higher in the pre-season write ups.
-
I agree with the Squirrels. Pitchers are time bombs. In this format where you can get rid of the salary commitment quickly (50% right away, and 50% more each 30 days) it is not as bad as MLB where you are stuck with contracts for years. But committing 15% or more of your payroll to any pitcher is uncomfortable. Most pitchers (even Cy Young winners) I am hesitant to go over 10% of payroll. But Kershaw is so good I am tempted to make more offers.
-
There is a lot of risk in taking a pitcher with that high salary though. There is a good chance Kershaw will be worth $60-$70, but there is also a good chance he will be worth less than $20. However I think its only an injury risk, if he is healthy and pitches 175+ innings he will be worth over $60.
-
Kershaw is one of the best pitchers in history, and he is in his prime - not yet 30. It is hard to add a $62 salary, especially if you have to give up a lot of trade value. But I don't see any reason to think Kershaw is not still at the height of his abilities.
-
That's the thing. What is Kershaw worth? Is he even the best pitcher anymore? I will be very interested to see what his market price is.
At least he's not David Price.

If Kershaw is in the draft, I will definitely keep bidding beyond the $40 range. Not sure I can take him on at $62, but I guarantee he won't go for too much less than that in the draft. The last thing I want to do is improve Winnetka's bargaining power, but there is no way Kershaw goes for less than $55.
-
I would love to see what Kershaw costs at auction, especially compared to Ohtani and all his hype. Sale and Strasburg both went in the $40s last year at auction. Obviously Kershaw is better than them, but he hasn't been KERSHAW! really the last 2 years.
-
Kershaw $62 (4.07 under fangraphs avg) and Arrieta $22 (8.07 under fangraphs avg). I would like to move both for low cost reserves or prospects.

OTOH... Ohtani is going to be a very good pitcher. His 100 mph fastball is not even his most impressive pitch. His 12-6 curveball is extremely impressive. I suspect he will max out around 175 innings. But I think he will provide 160 to 175 innings of very good pitching. I don't see a record of him ever throwing more than 160 innings, and that was 2015. Teams would be nuts to boost his innings more than 175 when they will have him long term.
-
I spent way too much time today watching Ohtani videos. His hands start high, and his swing plane is relatively flat - he is not an uppercut hitter, not a Stanton/Judge style "torque" hitter, but he hits the ball hard. He seems smooth and quick. I predict he goes opposite field a lot, hits effectively with occasional power. But the hype is out of control.
-
I don't think Otani will have a major impact batting. I listen to mlbradio quite a bit, and there seems to be quite a consensus that Otani will be better than Tanaka and Darvish. His 100mph fastball has very little movement, but he has 3 secondary pitches that he uses well. In addition, he is developing a splitter which would complement his fastball well.

League 548 needs a Winnetka Dodgers, or a Flying Squirrels 2. Any takers?
-
If anybody is interested in another league, we have a vacant team in league 548. Team is called Philly Phanatics, league is called Recreate Him in the Aggregate. The team has some good, cheap players like $5 Rhys Hoskins, $3 Willy Adames... It is a challenging league, the defending champ is pretty good. But that is what makes the game fun.
-
Auction prices for star players can get crazy, so I will guess he goes for $45.
-
Interesting. If he can be in both a hitter spot (util?) and pitcher spot on days he pitches, his value will go up. I doubt they will do that, so he probably only generates points in one role at a time. Still, he adds flexibility. And having seen video of him pitching and hitting I think he will be very good.
-
Anyone want to venture a guess on Otani’s average auction price? I’ll start at $38.

I can't fit Stanton into my budget at $65. I will cut him and hope to sign him for less $ in the auction. But if anybody is interested and has room in your budget, I would trade him for any player I would carry over into next year.
-
Steamers beating Zips and Pecota isn’t much to brag about. I know Zips is also heavily weighted to the players mean. Zips and Steamers do very poorly in projecting rising young stars. I’m unable to pry Berrios from Squirrels. I bet Steamers has Berrios regressing next year. I would be willing to bet 2/1 odds that Berrios progresses. There is only one projection service that I have found and like, but you have to pay for it. I used to like Oliver, but I can’t find it anymore.

No worries Spa. Steamer is just one of many tools. Happy Thanksgiving to everyone. I am thankful for a fun 11 months in the league. Here's hoping to a year from now being thankful that I was able to crush everyone else in 2018. ;)
-
Please abandon this team. Thank you.
-
Regardless... Happy Thanksgiving to everybody. And I probably shouldn't have listed all of the players I was hoping to acquire, but c'est la vie.
-
I don't mean to be a jerk - I mean this as good natured ribbing... The Steamer projections for Gleyber Torres, Willy Adames, Brad Zimmer, Ryan McMahon, Franklin Barreto... are really, really bad. And the Steamer projections for Trea Turner & Marwin Gonzalez are mediocre. But these guys are all super-expensive or off-limits. Seems like Steamer projections only relevant sometimes. Admittedly, I like all of these guys and I think their Steamer projections are garbage.
-
Yikes that is going to be a rough setback for an already struggling Braves franchise.
-
If I read the report correctly, they lose 14 current minor leaguers (who all become free agents with as-yet unknown restrictions), their 3rd round draft pick in the next rule 4 draft, and they are under severe restrictions on signing any international players for the next 4 years. I am no Braves fan (esp. after the 1992 post season disaster for my Bucs) but even I have sympathy for Braves fans at this point.
