I would assume Santana will be playing 1B and push Rhys to the outfield.
-
Added 1B eligibility or lost 1B eligibility?
-
Of all the things the Phillies needed, a first baseman was not one of them. Never expected Santana to wind up in Philadelphia. Rhys Hoskins just added several years of 1B eligibility. And Nick Williams just added several years of not playing much.
-
I googled that and it came back with dried peas and lentils. Try being in an accountants office in the middle of summer :(

I have been at a Western Pulse Growers Assosiation meeting (it's about as exciting as it sounds) for the last 10 hours and will probably be here for 6-8 more hours. Trade offers are highly appreciated!

I would love to see Cutch in Boston.

I would really like Cutch's spray chart at Fenway Park. He could DH most days, and he would not look so lost patrolling LF at Fenway instead of PNC's giant CF or RF.

Rumors are the Nationals going hard at Arrieta. Darvish to the Twins.

Predictions: McCutchen and Josh Harrison to Red Sox for (overrated) Jay Groome... Gerrit Cole to Yankees for (overrated) Clint Frazier... Machado to Yankees for (overrated) Gleyber... Padres sign (overrated) Hosmer for wayyyy too much $... Angels sign (not overrated) Arrieta for too much...

Not a huge fan of Robles, but I do think Acuna is the real deal. Honeywell no, Kopech yes, Keller not quite.

I could see Machado going to the Yankees for Torres.

Manny Machado to the Yankees by close of business today. Any takers? They traded Chase Headley this morning.
-
The Pirates will ruin Keller before he gets to the majors. They don't let their minor league pitchers focus on their curveball - they constantly throw low fastballs. Find a team that throws fewer off speed pitches than the Pirates.
-
I like Honeywell. Anybody who can throw a screwball gets extra respect. Fascinating pitch. Honeywell goes against the trend of relying on hard "Warthen" sliders and low 2 seamers. He is in a tough environment for pitchers, but he is an interesting pitcher to watch.
-
I would put Honeywell up there too. Possibly Kopech and Keller as well.
-
I shouldn't say that... Willie Calhoun is the best, then Acuna, then Robles :)
-
Victor Robles is close, but I think Acuna is going to hit for more power.
-
The only prospects who I think are at Acuna's level are Walker Buehler and Anthony Reyes. I don't think any hitting prospects are at Acuna's level right now. It might have been just a hot streak in the AFL, but Acuna looks like an almost sure thing All Star to me. You never know with prospects, but I would put money on Acuna to be an all star by 2019.
-
Kinda thought, after trading Headley, they'd move Torres to 2B and sign Moustakas
-
Don't worry Maui, I was razzing Spa in the other direction since he rejected my Torres for Seager offer. All in good fun although I don't usually discuss rejected trades. So, I guess we have established that Seager is more valuable than Torres and less valuable than Acuna as far as prospects go. And somewhere near Lindor. I think Seager gets hurt by playing in Dodger Stadium at home and lots of game in SF and SD which are also pitcher parks.
-
Would anybody be surprised if the Yankees traded Gleyber Torres for Manny Machado?
-
I'm asking a huge Indians fan right now.

I think 95% of all Fangraph owners would take Seager over Lindor.

Fangraphs Auction Calculator and the Ottoneu Surplus Calculator both would.
-
Steamer wouldn't.
-
I'll take $26 Lindor over $27 Seager.
-
Altuve is almost off the charts in my view. Altuve, Trout, and Kershaw are all worth at least $60 and probably more. So Altuve has at least $24 in excess value.
-
If Seager is a bargain at $27, what is Altuve worth at $36 who scored 300 more points than Seager?

Nice - a public push to say I should trade Acuna for Seager

Well, we know Seager at $27 is more valuable than Gleyber Torres at $5. ;) And you can keep the snow. It is cold here in Boise today, but no snow yet this year thankfully.
-
Corey Seager's Steamer projection is superior to Francisco Lindor, Jose Ramirez, and Trea Turner. He is projected to post a .360 wOBA (better than Ramirez, Lindor or Turner) and 125 wRC+ (also better than Ramirez, Lindor, Turner). I would love to see what Seager's trade value is. Most prospects, no matter how highly touted, would be lucky to ever have seasons as good as Seager has already had. There must be trades left to be made. There is no off-season in Ottoneu.
-
Just spent 2 hours shoveling snow, now I am stuck in a law office on a day nobody else is here - I could really use baseball as a welcome distraction... I am trying to kick off some interesting trades...

I wouldn't trade Ramirez either. As Winnetka correctly projected, he will be nearly as good as Calhoun next year..

Touche.

Probably just a bit below Willie Calhoun.

I expect somewhere between the 2017 version of Ramirez and the 2016 version. Either way I'm not even considering trading him.
-
Contrary to what Winnetka suspects, I would never give up the next great superstar in Willie "Mays" Calhoun.
-
Steamer projects Jose Ramirez to lose .100 from his 2017 SLG. But I will bet in any trades, he would be sold as the 2017 version of himself, as opposed to the Steamer projection version.
-
Not this time my friend. Calhoun is my 2Bman this year. I paid too much for him. Plus, I was agreeing with you about the silliness of relying on Steamer.
-
Here we go again, pumping up Calhoun so you can dump him for a quality player.

Willie Calhoun's Steamer projection was part of the reason he was so expensive. I likely paid too much for him, but not b/c of Steamer but because his swing is just really impressive to watch and I tend to be overly impressed by swing mechanics. But anyway, when it comes to trade negotiations Steamer often comes up, even with prospects, when it is optimistic. Just saying there is a double standard when it comes to the reliability of projections...
-
Well you can't really go to projection systems when it comes to prospects. For players that have been in the league for a while the projections can be an okay jumping off point, but for a prospect you have to expect progression not regression. In the words of Paul Sporer "Propsect growth isn't linear", but you still have to expect growth which the projections aren't really built to take into account.
-
The interesting part of trade negotiating is that Steamer projections are used as selling points when they are good, and they are never mentioned when they are poor. If Steamer is reliable, Gleyber Torres is a waiver wire pickup at $1.
-
Steamer and Zips are essentially the same as Marcel.

From Baseball Reference:
The Marcels projection system was originally developed by Tom Tango as the "minimum level of competence that you should expect from any forecaster." Let's let him describe it:
Actually, it is the most basic forecasting system you can have, that uses as little intelligence as possible. So, that's the allusion to the monkey. It uses 3 years of MLB data, with the most recent data weighted heavier. It regresses towards the mean. And it has an age factor.
