I would say that's definitely a possibility. All those millions in signing bonuses lost.... yeesh
-
Ouch. The Braves will feel that sting for years. They should sue Coppolella - even if he is judgment-proof due to lack of assets.
-
Also, Coppolella gets lifetime ban and Braves can't re-sign any lost prospect
-
I think that's the plan, Spa. I've heard as many as 14 lost prospects, a draft pick, and international signing restriction through 2020
-
I hope MLB makes an example of the Braves, and I hope they look in to the possibility other teams do these things also. If the Braves did this, it seems unlikely everybody else was diligently adhering to the rules. This should be an interesting story when the details are public.
-
As for steamer - it's one of many tools. If you do use steamer, please hit me up for trades and maybe we can find a match.

Well another team offered Maitan $10m but he took 4.25m from the Braves. Assume under the table payments, and payments going to other players to circumvent the rules. They also just "agreed" to sign a 14 year old - which you can't do.

What the heck did John Coppolella do as Braves GM? They announced penalties for the Braves, but nobody even seems to be discussing what the Braves actually did.

You can disagree with Steamer all you want and mock us simpletons who consider it, but the claims that is simple regression to the league mean are inaccurate. It does use regressions, but it does it linked to past player performance which includes player age. Beyond the Box score compared projection system performances for the 2015 and 2016 seasons and Steamer beat ZiPS, PECOTA and Marcel both seasons. I have not seen data for 2017. So, this simpleton will continue to use Steamer as an input.
-
By the way, Steamer absolutely blows. It is a projection service for simpletons. Simple mean reversion math with no baseball knowledge whatsoever.

I thought it was a fair trade. I don't believe Blackmon will repeat what he did last year but he will still be one of the best hitters in the league. Davis has solid offense he is basically a lock for 40 homeruns and Calhoun could easily be a top 30 OF this year with 2B eligibility.
-
My thought process was pretty similar to mighty nimrod's... The steamer projections between Blackman and Davis aren't that dissimilar in our scoring and I added Calhoun who I happen to like and could be a pretty solid MI piece if he gets the playing time. Davis for Blackman wouldn't be a trade I would make but throw in Calhoun and I think it's fair. Everybody has their own opinions though and that's what makes this game fun and challenging.

I'm not advocating either way. I like Calhoun. But Steamer just takes past performance and regresses toward league average. Regression is fine when looking at trends, but on an individual basis it is almost meaningless. And on an individual player basis there is no difference between age 29 and age 31. I think Blackmon is among the best hitters in the game in this format, and I don't see a reason to predict a substantial decline in the next 2 to 3 years.
-
Steamer wRC+ forecasts for the 3 players: Blackmon 108, Davis 114 and Calhoun 110. That is park adjusted, so Blackmon will be helped by Coors more than wRC+ would indicate. Age also matters for both performance and generally for health. Blackmon is 31 whereas Davis is only 29 and Calhoun is 23. Blackmon is probably the best player in 2018 of the 3, but this trade is not unreasonable for either side.
-
Cubs- do you realize that defense doesn’t count in fantasy baseball right?
-
Even if you are a mean reversion guy, the past three years Blackmon has outscored Davis by an average of 220 points. Calhoun looks to be a fantasy replacement outfielder. Calhoun is brutal at second base, I'm assuming he won't see the infield in Texas. This trade is very lopsided.

Calhoun for $4 in Texas could really work out well, and I suspect we just saw Blackmon's career year. I thought it was a reasonable trade.

Kristopher Davis for Charles Blackmon? WTF??

Spa City Thoroughbreds's trade block has been updated!

On the trade block today is an outfielder fresh off a 35 HR, 14 SB, 12% BB rate season in which he posted a .378 wOBA, and in which he provided 6.54 P/G - more than Betts, McCutchen, Yelich, Cespedes, and many other pricey outfielders. He is available relatively cheap in the Spa City Fire-Sale.

I am an addict. The first step is admitting I have a baseball addiction. I don't know what step 2 is though.

Everybody who selected Spa City as being part of the first trade in the league pool is a winner. Oh wait, everybody had Spa City as being part of the first trade! :) Nice to have Trader Jack (that's an old school reference for you youngsters out there) kick off the trade season for us.
-
If you are interested in Freddie Freeman, I have a lot of free time today and I'm stir crazy from no baseball. So I am definitely open to trade ideas. I am looking to go with a clean-slate rebuild next year, so nobody is off-limits if the offer is reasonable.

I would add Gary Sheffield to the list of 60+ WAR outfielders who are blocked by the backlog.
-
Most of the guys in the 65 WAR range have not been getting in lately, so Beltran will likely have a hard time. Edmonds, Walker, Edgar Martinez, Lou Whitaker, and Alan Trammell either missed completely or are going to have a hard time getting in. I think all are deserving.
-
Carlos Beltran retired on a high note. Although he held on a year too long in terms of productivity he got a World's Series ring, which is nice. I assume he is a Hall of Famer, but I would not be surprised if he has to wait a while. He is essentially tied with non-Hall of Famer center fielders Jim Edmonds and Larry Walker in terms of career WAR. I hope they all get in.

I think I might have the most uneven distribution of arbitration dollars with my top two guys (Ramirez and Lindor) receiving $26 of the $31 on my team.
-
With a few days left in arbitration, I am the current "winner" with $32 allocated to the Mighty Nimrods. I am not sure if I should be thankful to the one owner who only allocated $2 to me or disappointed that I can't earn the "Gift of Love" badge for a perfect arbitration. ;) Spa City and the Flying Squirrels are close on my heels with $31 each and Winnetka and Homina at $30 apiece. 93 different players have received allocations! Shows there are a lot of different opinions

Anybody interested in Giancarlo Stanton at $65 next year? I can't afford him, and I'm looking at a rebuilding year. But if anybody views his auction price at/above his current salary, he is definitely available. I have to cut him otherwise, so I would take any player I would see as a "keeper". Also available are Justin Upton, Daniel Murphy, Freddy Freeman and Aaron Judge.

If I ran the Red Sox, I would go for Carlos Santana instead of Hosmer or JD Martinez... Santana is a switch hitter with power who walks as often as he strikes out. If I ran the Giants, I would go for Lorenzo Cain - he would cover a lot of ground in Pac Bell Park's huge OF.
