Danger—looks like you went over cap with those waiver pickups at the end of the year. Can you please cut down to under your cap?

i think we're on the same page--we'd consider potential changes for the 2019 season.

Any rule changes agreed upon this offseason must not go into effect until next season. I've never been in a league that was fine making rule changes for the current offseason.

i'm thinking it probably makes sense to consider rule changes once we're through arbitration, but before the keep/cut deadline. does that sound good to everyone?

Also, please message me with your coupon allocation *before* arbitration begins on Oct. 15. Any coupons that are unspent by then are forfeit. I've calculated the coupons as follows: Philly: $0; Trust: $5 ($10 * 50% penalty); Big Country: $10; Acuna: $15; Harmon's, Di-Eyes, and Crosstrees: $17; 4 Baggers: $18; Profar: $21; Wildman: $23; Franimal & Peel: $24. Please let me know if you've calculated your coupon differently. Thanks!

What is Crosstrees Grace anyway? Sounds like the title of a Creed album.

Well you'd have to go through an offseason before the coupon system could impact things, I understand that. I was just curious about trade activity.
-
in other words, you only have 2 weeks to redeem your coupon: from Oct 1-Oct 14.
Pavin Meadows on
September 24, 2018 4:54 PM
-
the coupons must be applied *before* arbitration begins. just message me with your coupon allocations and i'll make the changes with my commissioner tools. as for trading volume, i think we were a bit higher this year than in years past, though i'm not sure the coupon system influenced it much one way or the other.
Pavin Meadows on
September 24, 2018 4:53 PM
-
A final thing sort of related to the coupons: How was the volume of trading this year compared to previous seasons? More deals, fewer deals, the same?
-
I take it the offseason allocations come first, and then the de-allocations? How do we submit our allocation lists? I hope it's something like the Airing of Grievances in Festivus.
-
well, i didn't notice until after i had gone over. i likely could have been more careful and picked a multi-start day, but as we've noted there's not much left on the line
-
oops, looks like you already went over. hope that didn't affect you.
Pavin Meadows on
September 24, 2018 4:22 PM

That is correct.
The Lōgunate on

Franimal--my understanding is that it's a soft cap on IP, meaning that you still receive all of your pitching points on the day you go over.
Pavin Meadows on
September 24, 2018 4:20 PM
-
Fwiw, it passed by a unanimous vote last off-season.
Pavin Meadows on
September 24, 2018 2:32 PM
-
Well, if keeping owners engaged is the goal, then the coupon system has already failed since three teams will finish well short of the IP limit this season. And without question it will be easier to retain high-salary players. That's math so simple I can figure it out. This was obviously agreed to by a majority and I'll drop it, but I don't think it's good for the long-term competitiveness of the league.
-
$24 is the max coupon. No typo.
Pavin Meadows on
September 24, 2018 1:48 PM

and yes, Franimal, you are correct. You stop accruing points once you've reached your positional cap
The Lōgunate on
September 24, 2018 1:41 PM
-
Yes, the entire point is to create engagement throughout the season. Also, trading has opened up in other leagues I'm in with this policy as there are more contenders.... as in more people willing to buy talent in exchange for useful assets that rebuilding teams want/need. Personally, I'd be in favor of a more bell curve-like shape where the top (maybe top few) teams get reduced coupons, but that could be something to look into in the future. No changes for this upcoming offseason though
The Lōgunate on
September 24, 2018 1:40 PM

once i'm over the limit, stats just stop counting, right? I don't need to actively bench guys for any reason?
-
Darvish, per what Wildman said, you award by total points so that teams have incentive to compete all year. It's not to make it easier to retain players, it's to keep people fielding a full team of major leaguers.
-
That's a fair point, but I'd question why it's necessary to award by total points in the first place. If the goal was to make it easier to retain players, why not just let every team apply $20? Also I figure there's an error in the spreadsheet and the coupon dollars for 19,000 points and up should be $25?
-
here's the link to the coupon doc. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1bJ6GGjkw-1jNnzTNCeECL99NtbAKOIerIY0vRZ-FpNk/edit#gid=0

the coupon system is already set for this offseason, though we can discuss changes to it for next year. more broadly, rebuilding teams might want to devote more effort to hitting their IP and games limits to get the coupons.
Pavin Meadows on
September 24, 2018 11:12 AM

Yeah. It'll do that. It will also offset a similar increase for Bregman. So, yay for me. If that's what the league wants, for everyone to keep their best players in perpetuity, that's fine, I guess. But the teams that are lower in the standings are being put at a significant disadvantage here. They'll get less or (in at least one case) NO discount, and they'll lose the chance to bid for superstars who should become too expensive to keep. How are the rebuilding teams ever going to get better?
-
In my case, it will offset the $33 salary increase on Jose Ramirez so I can keep him another year.
-
Again, what is the coupon system intended to accomplish?
-
The reasoning behind the arb coupon system is to a) prevent teams that take on hundreds of dollars in loans during a season and b) help promote more engagement during the season as the teams not at the top have coupon dollars to play for. The goal behind the system is to promote more competition in the standings for longer periods of time into the season.

Meaning nothing less than $1. E.g., you could split a $19 coupon $10, $5, and $4.
Pavin Meadows on
September 23, 2018 4:12 PM

You can apportion it among your players in even dollar amounts.
Pavin Meadows on

And what's the reasoning for having this stipulation?
