The one slightly against-spirit thing I've done is cut my lousy bullpen arms. I'm willing to fill out my RP positions if that was the source of the complaint. But my vote is for no roster restrictions.
-
I want owners to be able to make decisions in their best interest. If you restrict behavior, and make people make decisions that are counter to their plans, that's how you lose owner interest. I don't think I accept the argument that me cutting a valuable asset to pick up Joey Wendle off the wire for a week makes this a more competitive league. It doesn't.
-
I'd vote to have Section I of the Rules be the entire regulation over this--not more (e.g., minor leaguer caps) or less (e.g., being able to trade or cut your pitchers after hitting 1500 IP).

i prefer to stick w the literal reading, namely even if you max out your innings, you still need to roster the enough ML pitchers to fill out the lineup. it’s easier to understand and administer. and since we require people to maintain this type of roster in the off-season, it would make sense to apply it thoughout the season as well.

For what it's worth, I actually do think it's more of a compiling thing, especially for pitchers. If someone wanted to roll with 12 SPs to start the season and then cut/trade them all once they hit 1500, that (or the reverse) would be fine with me. I'm almost certainly in the minority, but I would still favor some version of the rule I suggested before, even if adjusted to be really quite lenient for what the target totals are.
-
yep, i agree with Rusty. it’s not a compiling thing.

Defining floors gets you back to the coupon structure, without the incentives. I think the rule Dave quotes is not all that ambiguous. I think this rule keeps it simple. By simple, I mean that it's a day to day thing. Not something you tally at the end of year.
-
But nobody gets to the max games/innings at every single position. The season's that long, you can't always be there to set your roster at every possible moment, and some seasons just come with a shite ton of injuries. I'm saying we need floors. It shouldn't be a big deal if you finish with, say, 1475 IP or 159 games at 3B. Saying you need at least one active player at every spot is a logical starting point, but we have to make the effort to eliminate all ambiguity.

it’s right here in the standard ottoneu rules, right at the top: https://ottoneu.fangraphs.com/rules#rosters-in-season

if someone falls short of that, we’d handle it like any other illegal roster. the owner need to make it legal as soon as possible.

that seems like a common sense definition to me. does anyone see if differently?

i define it as having an active, uninjured ML to occupy every lineup spot, though only 1 catcher. they don’t need to be playing every day.

Well if people want to continue to require fully active lineups, by this offseason the league should define what, officially, constitutes a full lineup. That might not be easy if we don't want to commit to limits on rostering minor leaguers. We could still institute games/IP floors, but then what would be the penalty for falling short of those games and innings?
-
I'm with the majority here -- I have no problem with prospect hoarding (unless it's Twins players and they aren't on my team). The only requirement should be fielding a full lineup.
-
just speaking as an owner, not commish, i’m convinced that we should just stick w the status quo. namely, no limits on prospects, as long as you field a full lineup of MLB players. we can of course revisit this during the off-season.

these are all great points. thank you everyone, for a lively and respectful debate. i’ll also note that Rich (Acuna) has always been an engaged and active owner and is a cornerstone of the league.

I don't think we can go back to the coupon system, given the restrictions of Prestige League. But lately I've been wondering if non-contending teams hoarding prospects is even a problem. This isn't standard roto, where teams down in the standings can still be a factor in certain categories. The actions of non-contenders have no bearing on the teams at the top. In a dynasty format, you're either playing for this year or next year. Let people do what they're gonna do and live with their choices.
-
Shame me for not making a transaction this week, will you?
-
This is my (Kas House Gang) first year and I'm trying to build a strong base, so prospects limits would hurt me going forward, 100% against limits AND penalties
-
Have no problem w/ prospect hoarding. There are 6 teams within 400 normalized points of the lead so there are no competitive issues here. Today's prospect hoarders are tomorrow's championship challengers. I'm against any rule affecting salaries of any teams. 11 of 12 teams have made a transaction in the last week. The 12th, Mounty, just replied to this debate. All owners engaged. Prospect hoarders have read Dave's admonishment to field a full active lineup. Message sent/received.
-
i honestly don’t feel strongly about it, because it’s not like roto or head-to-head where tanking inherently disrupts the integrity of the game.

Agree Wholeheartedly with Mount Rose. I assume I may be construed as a prospect hoarder if folks think 8 should be the cap. With a 40 man roster not sure why we would insist on 32 MLB players. I dont like preventing folks from being part of prestige but this is a “free” league and we all derive our “fun” differently
-
What about a rule that if a team fails to reach a points threshold and fails to reach a games/IP threshold, the salaries of its minor leaguers inflate $2 instead of $1? I'd set the thresholds at something like 15,000, which comes out to averaging about 4.35 P/(G+IP) and 95% of available (G+IP). So, not a flat ban on prospect hoarding, but you pay a relatively steep "tax" if you can't assemble a reasonable squad, as measured by either performance or just by having players on the field
-
well, the $50 cap on net incoming loans does restrict a contender’s ability to push in all the chips. that rule also hurts rebuilders, because it makes it harder for them to sell off a good, but high-priced rental.

Poorly written. Sorry: to be clear, I like our current rules more than the coupon system, and like the coupon system more than a prospect cap, so my vote would be for no change, given the options you've mentioned, KL.
-
I'd be opposed to a prospect cap--we don't have rules limiting how fully a contender can push his chips, and I don't see a reason to have a mirror image rule limiting how completely an owner can commit to a rebuild. I'm fine with the current approach, but would favor returning to coupons over a prospect limit (even given that it would make our owners ineligible for Prestige Leagues).
-
anyway, this is just meant as a conversation-starter. what do others think?
Pavin Meadows on

so i’d propose that we just set a cap on prospects—limit it to like 8 minor leaguers or something. we’d only count guys that didn’t make any ML appearances, so we wouldn’t count up and down guys or players on rehab assignments.

i’ve received a complaint from an owner about prospect hoarding, and a request that we return to the coupon system. let’s revisit it during the off-season. i agree that it seems like the current system isn’t working. but my preference is to go w a system that still allows people to participate in the prestige league.

just a friendly reminder that, while we no longer have the coupon system, you’re expected to field a full lineup. there are a few teams with a lot of prospects that are on the verge of no longer being able to do so.

done, thanks Rusty

Commish, pls add 2 to Barrero's salary

I'm just happy to get the $3 in cap room back.

I just figured someone would go above $3, and I would so shrewdly enforce $4. What a letdown.
-
kinda relieved i didn’t get him.

I think that Jasson Dominguez auction might be my favorite we’ve had since I got here

Lost close to 400 raw and normalized points to you in 10 days. Trending whatever is the opposite of juggernaut
-
once you normalize the IP and games played at catcher, you’re still in first.
-
Or not
-
Framber is a juggernaut this season!
-
that’s great news—no reason why he shouldn’t be eligible both ways on the same day.
-
Wow. Per Niv's update, Ohtani is unquestionably Ottoneu's top player now.
-
done—thank you.

Commish please reset Alcala's salary to $4. Thank you.
