I’ve been playing roto fantasy baseball for a long time. Every year, a couple of people check out in June or July. It just happens, it probably will always happen. But, if I am out of the money, and you tell me that I could knock $12 off my arb totals by finishing 4th, of course I’ll be motivated to get 4th instead of 5th or 6th.
-
As for the coupon debate, my opinion is that we got slightly off track. It seems that we got into a debate about the legitimacy of prospect for veteran trades. As the article points out, the coupons are designed to keep the last place team fully engaged in the current season without preventing them from preparing for the next one. As Chicks pointed out, the coupons will have little to know effect on trading. However, if they encourage people to stay engaged and play all year, I’m in favor.
-
I really believe that due to the change in this year’s rules that expired teams are full price, we need to advertise these teams prior to the keeper deadline. Perhaps we could give the absent owners 10 days to respond to us before being cut?
-
May I suggest that we as a league decide on what to do about our 3 absent spots? I completely understand the hesitation to cut people prior to their expiration date. However, I have concerns about us being able to fill those spots after the cut deadline but prior to the draft. Expired teams are no longer half price, they are full price. I'm not sure we can attract owners to pay $100 for a team that they have no ability to improve prior to draft day.

We have a lot of comments to read through here, so I want to re-post one of my previous comments so that it does not get lost in the shuffle. My opinion is that this should be our current primary objective:
-
"The embarrassing tank jobs in Houston and Chicago resulted in Championships," which will lead to even more imitators, elimination of the MLB "middle class" (those who legitimately try to compete but fall short) and an eventual change of the rules in order to return the spirit of competition to the game. Everybody wants to be the Astros, but most end up being the Padres. Again, we should try to do BETTER than MLB's broken system. (Would anyone argue we should eliminate the sa

Another option could be to award arb coupons for reaching AB/IP thresholds, though that would probably favor the "winners" more. The point is not to prevent "rebuilds," but rather to reward those who make an effort to "build" while still competing. And please save any arguments that make comparisons to MLB. The tanking in MLB (and NFL/NBA/NHL) is an embarrassment and is only getting worse. You will see change there eventually, once the powers that be wake up. We sho

Arb coupons will not stop prospect for overpriced veteran trades. Nor should they. If they will encourage owners to set their lineups all year and remain active on the waiver wire, then I think its something worth considering.
-
Dynasty/Keeper - semantics . I know how this works. The rebuild is to try and build a team that will compete over the long haul. I think everyone here wants to build a competitive team. Nobody wants to be in rebuild all the time, but sometimes it's a must if you want to be competitive for the top spot later on. By the way you can throw out your "mindless" insults all you want. It doesn't bother me.

Major league teams that want to win don't construct a roster to "remain competitive" every year. To me that's like being in hell. Sometimes you have to totally rebuild to make your team a winner and yes that takes "SKILL." It's not like I'm doing it every year. I like that I can do that here without penalty. To me it's not a big deal if we lose a couple of teams a year. Replace them and move on. Who knows why they left. It could be for all kinds of reasons.

Of course it's self serving. That's what fantasy sports are supposed to be. You find a league with rules that suit YOU and that YOU will have fun doing. I enjoy this league the way it is. One reason I got into Ottoneu is because it feels like the closest thing to running a major league team with the 40 man roster. It gives me a chance to build from the ground up.

It will result in more engagement up and down the standings, as all teams will now have "something to play for," while it will also serve to reduce the number of mindless dump trades.
-
All I am proposing is rewarding the teams who fight the good fight, yet still come up short. Those who focus solely on the accumulation of prospects without any regard for competing are still welcome to do so, but they are already getting enough of an advantage by not paying any mind to the current season. I am confident that a new system such as this will strengthen the league and greatly reduce, if not eliminate ownership turnover.
-
Honestly, how hard is it to look at a prospect list and trade a superstar (plus eat his salary) for a top prospect while you sink in the standings? What does that really prove? Is that a show of fantasy baseball "skill"? If my adolescent daughter could pull off the same strategy, chances are the answer is NO. Building for the future WHILE REMAINING COMPETITIVE in the present is the sign of true skill and is really what the Ottoneu experience is (or at least should be) about.
-
Just to set the record straight, Ottoneu is not a "dynasty" format. If you are looking for a league where you can luck into A-ball Mike Trout and then keep him for his entire career without any compensation, you are in the wrong place. Ottoneu is a salary-cap keeper league with some cool features that mandate keeping one eye on the future as you compete in the present. Those who fail to compete in the present are really circumventing the spirit of the competition.
-
With all due respect to our recent last place finishers, the term "dynasty" refers to a series of SUCCESSES. To take pride in not competing (and finishing last while doing nothing but collecting assets) in hopes of winning the following season is anything but a dynasty. A dynasty is a team that shows the ability to compete for the title year after year.
-
When I tracked down our former commish before taking the reins, he explained he was so exasperated by the continual selfish dump trades that arbitrarily swing the title race and impotent veto system that he was leaving Ottoneu completely. This year, a pair of teams apparently dropped out without notice mid-season, while the 2016 winner (and 4th this year) also seems to have disappeared. In short, anyone who tries to argue how "healthy" this league is simply has not been paying attentio
-
Good start to the discussion. A bit self-serving, as opposed to league-focused, but a good start by those contributing. For those who are unaware, the (3-year) history of this league has been littered with far too much turnover. So many teams jumped ship after the first year that we were forced to do a total re-draft, so kinda tough to call that year a "success" by any measure. Turnover after year 2 included a team just before the draft (we had an 11-team auction), as well as the commi

If our league turnover isn't out of the norm, then ignore my suggestion. I do agree with EPR though, getting new owners ASAP would be nice. At the least its 3 new potential trade partners!

This is my 2nd year in a dynasty league, so I'm not going to profess to be an expert, but I think we need to solve ownership commitment before we look to solve any competitiveness issues. Arb coupons lose their value if 1/4 of the league doesn't allot their money. I was 1 of 4 new owners last year. We will need 3 or 4 more this year. There are many of us committed to this league (evidenced by all the trades going down and discussion below). 12 would better. Maybe multi-year buy-ins?

Next time, I'll consider that thrill of going for eleventh place though. Sounds really fun. You should start your own website up with your preferred rules. Maybe you'll become a success. If your gonna suggest anything to help your issue, it should be to look at needing less veto votes for a trade. That would make more sense.

By the way, Chicks was very hesitate to even make the trade. Almost didn't happen from Chicks side. So must not have been that lopsided to all(Judge owner in particular). Do you think I coulda pulled the best keeper available in our league for one of those guys. Guess what-it wasn't the market value. Maybe you should still be upset with Chicks for having that asking price. I traded high priced players going back in the draft to get the player I was after.

I know I wouldn't pay that much for a team that I basically couldn't fix if necessary. Again, just my opinion, but I think it may be worth us discussing. Thank you.

Also, if we are entertaining suggestions, may I suggest that we as a league decide on what to do about our 3 absent spots? The trade coulda been vetoed if it was so outrageous. Most owners knew exactly what I was doing. Doing what was in my teams best interest to be competitive in the future. It's exactly as McCheese stated. Get over it man. And your the commish of this league. Perhaps you should be a little classier and not try to punk one of your owners out on the message board six months later. I suggest to you as commish, to make use of the private messages if you have an issue with me.

Each player pays $100 to run their team as they see fit and if a player makes the calculation that they mathematically cannot win in a given year, it makes the most sense for them to acquire as many keeper assets for the next year as possible. That's just my opinion too.
-
I do not think that our league has a competiveness problem. Last year, half the league was in the running for first late into the season. In addition, some teams towards the bottom of the standings were actively making trades to try and improve for this year. I understand there can be unbalanced trades in a dynasty league, but that is part of the dynasty game.
-
Whoa, whoa, whoa Torpedoes. You've got some issues there if your still having problems with the Aaron Judge trade. Sorry I didn't want to fight for eleventh place or even tenth place as you stated(that's idiotic). That Aaron Judge trade is looking strong for my team right now. And the players I traded will be there on draft day for me again. I was super competitive. By trading for the future in a dynasty league. Perhaps, you should consider playing in a non-keeper, non-dynasty league.

First of all, Torpedoes, let me say I appreciate you actively seeking ideas and soliciting our feedback on how to make our league as good as possible. I also appreciate you stepping up as commish when we got left late last year by our previous commissioner. With that being said, I have to agree with everyone McCheese stated.

I may be in the minority here, but just my two cents. I don't think I would be in favor any of these changes.

I read the article and was not crazy about those changes. If I'm in eighth place, I could care less about working my ass off to be in sixth or seventh for some coupon. I want to win. I want the money. If I'm in last place or down at the bottom it should be my prerogative to scrap it and work for next year where I have a legit chance to win it all without penalty.

Why because I was thinking about this year last year. I was very active all year last year to build my team. To me that is what a dynasty league is all about.

Personally, I enjoyed this season. I think our league is very competitive. I have no complaints. We had six players that were neck and neck with about 1 month left. We had 4 other players that were very active the whole season. I have no problem with players thinking about next year if they have no chance to win this year. At least they are active and trying to better their team. Last year I ended in last place with 18 points. At one point this year I was in first place.

To all, please read this short column, focusing especially on the final section regarding Arbitration "Coupons": https://www.fangraphs.com/fantasy/can-you-force-your-league-to-compete/
Feel free to comment, as the feedback from leagues incorporating such a structure has been tremendous. I will be constructing a formal proposal for the league's consideration in the very near future.
-
(2/2) cost us two owners last year (Winnersville checked out on June 11 and Shadynasty did the same a day later). My hope is a super-competitive keeper league in which playing for the future must be balanced with competing in the present. Fighting the good fight should be rewarded, even if you don’t come out on top. Finishing 4th should be better than finishing 5th, finishing 9th should be better than 10th, and anything should be better than finishing LAST! (Sorry, MasterBatters) More to come.
-
Hey, guys, Commish here, apologies for my relative radio silence, commissioner-wise. To be honest, I have been kinda down on the league since the Aaron Judge dump trade. Similar deals went down in 2016, and it is what I hate most about conventional Ottoneu. I have been working with Ottoneu to implement a mechanism that will increase leaguewide engagement and current-season competitiveness. I also believe having "nothing to play for" leads to the damaging disengagement that appears to h
