Torpedoes- perhaps you should worry less about the teams that care enough in January to 1) check their teams every day and 2) reply to these message board posts, and worry more about the teams that check their teams once a week (or not at all), never reply to any message or trade proposal and don't care enough to post or reply to this message thread.
-
It is sad to see so many unwilling or unable to commit to competing all season, every season, but it appears that the consensus is to play another season under the current system. Perhaps we will revisit what the spirit of competition means next year, and make the voting weighted, based on order of finish. In the meantime, I will sift through the auction draft replies and propose a draft date shortly.

Batters- we keep on agreeing on things! Next thing you know we’ll be trading with each other!
-
And ABS, I too must not have anything better to do. I'm in agreement with your post as well. Now that's a few post now where we are actually in agreement. After a shaky start, I think you just might be a decent fella afterall...lol. Season will be here before you know it. Let's set a draft date.

Are we still on this topic. I think it's pretty clear most do not want a change. Also don't want a new modification of the modification of the modified proposal. Leave this league the way it is. Let's move forward and get a draft date set instead of beating a dead horse. And Torpedoes, you must not understand the meaning of competition. There are no competitive issues in this league. It is actually very competitive. And each owner puts up $100 to prove it.

And yes, for those of you wondering, I have nothing better to do on Saturday night than post on fantasy baseball message boards.
-
And my vote would be no on the current proposal but I also don’t care. It would have absolutely no effect on how I run my team so it makes no difference to me if it’s implemented. But the fact that it wouldn’t make any difference in how I run my team is the reason I’d vote no. Why make a major rule change when it doesn’t change the way you play?
-
Plus it would be like a participation trophy, like my kindergartener gets when he plays a sport!!
-
What don’t we just change the voucher system to reward the teams that used the most games played and innings pitched? This rewards year round engagement while allowing teams to buy and sell as they please. Plus it doesn’t penalize teams for finishing in the money (we could exclude the 1st place team if need be). Basically this would reward teams for continually checking their teams and making sure they have an active lineup while not penalize teams that sell.

Duly noted, McCheese. Both you and Master Batters have made your opposition to competing every season quite clear. I am hoping to hear from those who have yet to share their thoughts.
-
My suggestion is to keep it the way it is.

Thank you, Mayor Mac. You are exactly right. I would hope that everyone cares where they finish. If you finish third, you essentially played for free, so there is some reward for that, but, as you point out, you still deserve some additional benefit. I, personally, would prefer the dough along with some lesser coupons, but perhaps you have a better structure. Any suggestions on how to more optimally stagger the coupon thresholds would be welcome.
-
If I were to finish third, I would be pissed that I didn't win. I would be extra pissed to then know that the fourth team (whom I beat) will have a pretty big advantage over me the next year. So will 5th and 6th.

I'm sure your response was not music to Torpedoes ears. He wants you to care about what place you are in. Our league was very active last year (except for 2 teams) in the exact way that you stated you were. Caring about what place you are in is why he wants the coupon system. I for one am not for it. For me paying 100 is enough. If I'm not in first I'm in last. I will stay active, but don't want it to have an impact on the next year.

As a reminder, here is the proposal as it currently stands, adjusted to reflect constructive comments and thoughts that have been shared so far: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1sr-LFO2IZfMPpiGDREismt_Orp-MHDe_B7pZZB550u8/edit?usp=sharing
We have heard from most teams, but I believe there are a few who have yet to weigh in. Would love to get input from everyone, if possible.

Those who wish to tank, dump, or whatever term is used for gutting your team in the present in hopes of building for the future are still free to do so. However, those who can build for the future while still competing in the present are rewarded a bit for doing so--as it should be in a fair COMPETITION.
-
Just to clarify, the hope and intent is to increase both competition and engagement in the current season. This plan gives EVERYONE a reason to stay invested in how they do in the current year, while providing a reward, however nominal for each place higher in the standings one is able to finish. It keeps some thrill of competition alive for every owner every season, no matter how much bad luck befalls your squad in the early going.
-
the number of moves (trades or waiver wire acquisitions) made by an owner. As I said in the beginning, I don't know that this league needs to do this; my argument is completely conceptual at this time.
-
Around June, my goal became not to focus on finishing as high as possible in the rankings, but rather to make as many deals that set me up for next year (which netted me players like Hoskins and Godley.) I was very active in the league, but I was not necessarily competitive. So I think competitiveness (as measured over multiple seasons) is a function of activity. Therefore if we implement any type of coupon system, it should probably be based off the most critical metric of activity -
-
That being said, if the goal is to increase engagement, I'm not sure it's the best system. Engagement to me means having owners who are active in both 1) making trades as well as 2) working the waiver wire. In that case, successful engagement is not always correlated with final standings. For example, in a league last year I had a multiple long term injuries to core players within the first couple months that immediately put me out of the running for placing.
-
Hey all, Torpedos asked me to respond to the arbitration coupon debate, so here it is. Since I am the newest member of the league, let me caveat this all with I don't actually know if we need to increase competitiveness or engagement. But I read the arb coupon proposal, and I don't see a glaring flaw in its design. I think we could probably tweak the distribution a bit, but overall I'm not opposed to trying it.

Most weekday evenings (7:30 or later) work for me as do most, but not all, weekend nights. I am away March 3-11th and won’t be able to draft at all in that window. Daytime is hard for me, even on weekends, because I have a job and 3 kids.

Happy New Year! I would appreciate hearing any more thoughts on improving the competitive challenge of this league by the end of this week, so that we can move forward. We also need to work on getting a draft date on the calendar. If you wish to share times/dates that DO NOT work, I will attempt to sift through the possibilities to come up with one that is mutually agreeable. Keep in mind that MLB Opening Day is Thursday, March 29, so our window is anytime between Feb. 1 and then.
