A bottom team needs the ability to go from the bottom to the top in the span of a few weeks with some over-performance and luck. Just tough to do that in a format like this.
-
In a total points league of any sort this is bound to happen - if you want more competitiveness, there needs to be weekly matchups and the possibility of more random outcomes.
-
Well, to be fair.... It WAS his bobblehead day.

Manny Machado: u mad bro? LOL
-
Enrico is right, but even if every team did this to perfection, they wouldn't be able to all maximize it at the same time, and thus some seasons are better lined up for specific teams. Every team can't compete fully every single season. There are cycles

The best ensurer of parity a isn't an artificial interference in the market, it's 12 owners who spend the time to maximize the value of their assets aggressively
-
Most truly competitive teams have underpriced assets which allow them to complement roster spots with expensive stars. Those are the same assets that will get crushed in arbitration annually. This is why there's always perceived value in prospects.

The teams that go over $400 are already going to get that luxury tax in the form of a higher percentage of arbitration dollars thrown their way this off season.

I think the current system is ok, BUT I think teams that have gone over the salary cap (400) should have to pay "luxury tax" and have extra arbitration dollars assigned to them based on how high their salary is.
-
A hard salary cap would hurt rebuilding teams more than help them. The current system is designed to allow those teams who can't compete an opportunity to move big salary for value pieces that help in the future.

I won't beat a dead horse here because I get on this soap box every year, but the best ensurer of parity is the salary cap. Having some teams with $200 figures and some with $600 does not help.
-
I can't imagine that this is the first season 7 or 8 teams have been eliminated on June 1.
-
Shouldn't the measure of parity take a longer-term view than just a single season (or part of a season)? Four teams are within 400 points of 1st, and we've had three different champions in 3 years.

Lucky Strikes total salary = $596. As fun as this league can be, parity has always been a problem.
-
I guess some unbalance shouldn't be a surprise when the top four teams are averaging $530+ in salary...

Shows the unbalance in the league this year. Half the league is loaded, other half is waiting for 2015.

The highest league score on June 1st came last year with 6,601 from FMW. Four teams blew away that mark on June 1st this year.

As of June 1st, Durham leads WAR in all-time points scored by less than 200 (60,809 vs. 60,638). Enrico (44,734) and Crying (43,102) are the closest at the bottom.

The most impressive single-season progression I can see in the standings was in 2012 when Knights ended April in 9th place but finished second overall (and just 700 points out of 1st).

Only two teams have finished each month of the season in the same place in the standings, both in 2012: Crying in 11th place; Enrico in 12th place (Knights on track this year to become the third).

In their championship seasons, both Durham & WAR both ended April in 7th place (Durham never finished a month outside of 2nd place after that).

Digging through old standings...In two of past three seasons, the team in 1st place on August 1st has gone on to win the title (Jed didn't overtake WGW for 1st until Sept. 1st last year).

I have 3 (Pence, Willingham, and Hamilton). Granted 2 of them haven't played all season...

I think he has 4 of those OF I mentioned, so that's not at all surprising.

Lucky is averaging 6/g as a team...
-
In fact, of the OFs averaging 6+ PPG (about 20), there are only a few that I would think are available to the contenders.
-
outside of Stanton, who I would guess is unlikely to move again after his recent move, there is only one player not currently on a contending team's roster.

To answer EP's "plague v asking price" comment: Sure the asking price may have been high (until now). But among the OF leaders in PPG,

Likewise, I've talked with ____ teams about moving Jesus......Montero. I'd say there's a 50/50 chance I move him....
-
Speaking of which, I have discussed Bumgarner, Wainwright, and Davis with teams recently. Willing to move any of them and have gotten an appealing offer. Would say chaces are good one ore more moves sometime in the next couple days.
-
That trade represents the first of what I would consider a probable "next wave" of trades where bottom teams realize they need to be buyers early for bigger pieces that complement their younger cheaper players for a run next season.

WGW just traded Trout, Fister, A. Reed, & A. Russell for Stanton, Yelich, Cole. Considering Trout's rental price, Baez' ugly start, and Stanton's breakout season, that seems like a hell of a good trade looking back from two months ago.

What's the record for number of points by one position player in one day? Seager's 41 has to be up there.

I love seager....after a dreadful first month +, he is back to about 6 p/g
-
Damn Kyle Seager. "You know what? I could hit a single for the cycle, but I'm going to go for my second triple of the game..." He wanted to give Branham a historic performance.
