But back to old habits... in that sense, if the group doesn't want to be bothered with any change at all then we're kind of stuck. Some are just going to see $50 out and not really care one way or the other.

Fantrax is offering a free league treasurer function these days, though I know the commish of the dynasty league I play in over there does not use it (yet... they just introduced the treasurer function last year and the league had been running for several years prior to my joining it, so old habits and all that). It likely makes very little sense to use Niv's weird progressive administrative payment structure given the other options available.

I genuinely enjoy ottoneu and the application continues to increase in slickness as the bugs are worked out. The Firehouse is a solid group and I enjoy playing against the lot of you, to the point where the $20 league fee is justifiable. However, I do agree with Mike that moving the money to the side would be in all our bets interests. LeagueSafe is a nice fantasy sports escrow service, but if you really want to duck those fees then PayPal to a league treasurer is probably the way to go.

I'll confirm that Niv has been perfectly pleasant in all my interactions with him, and the $240 league fee "is what it is" (and what it is is expensive... Fantrax dynasty formats go for $80 a league, and even longtime gold standard CBS Digital/Sportsline/whatever they call themselves these days is $150... I know Yahoo and ESPN provide free keeper support but it's nothing close to what the other two are offering).

This Niv guy may very well be acting out of necessity, but I'm honestly not into subsidizing his operation via an already sizable and now increasing rake. I'm flattered Chris invited me to join, even though I picked up a team that was in need of rebuild. I don't mind throwing a little money at that, knowing it's probably a loss for a while. But, to get to the point, I'm out at $50 and $75 with Niv taking his rake. I'm in at "$20" with the real money on the side.
-
Also, we are losing our resident economist to other concerns so will have an opening for 2019. I'll post up to the ottoneu Community to see if we can find someone there who wants the team, but if any of you know someone who wants to take on stewardship of #6 Organization then please let me know.

Jesus, this league message board is garbage. I'll send the link to the thread I quoted in it's own separate message. Anyway, it sounds like they'll be sending out the prize payments Saturday or Sunday. $300 to me, $100 to Jim, $50 to Josh.

If we stick with the $50 ottoneu league for 2019, Niv is going to take a larger share and the 1st place team is the one that pays it (2019 payouts set at 200/100/50). The lowest tier in 2019 is $20 and we'd have to do prizes on the side. Jimmy has already stated he'd be up for $75 (prize tiers 400/150/75 with Niv taking his $240 plus $35 in admin fees).

All questions about how Niv and Co do prize distribution are here (as opposed to being clearly stated on the rules or FAQ pages , natch):

In sum, you'll get your prize ($100) via PayPal to the email you have on file (the one on your user settings page). Very good work running down the 2nd place prize Jim! Josh makes his money back and I'll take my rightful place in the universe ($300).

What and when are the payouts?
-
Hey dudes, nice season, congrats Chris! Your good at this! I'm down for the $50 and $75 options next year.
-
I believe we have at least one economist here who can weigh in on the rationality of the options, though it would be great to hear from you all on what you'd prefer going forward. We'll have a two week decompression wherein inflation ($2 per major league player, $1 per minors guy) is applied, and then a month to allocate arbitration values. Drop a note while you're here for those functions and we'll see where things stand. If you don't plan to be back, let me know ASAP.

We could consider the $75 tier, with better prizes and an extra $25 to Niv for admin (and, in real terms, an extra $25 out of pocket for us all). The other option is to bump down to $20 and administer the prize pool via PayPal or a service like LeagueSafe. Each has it's pluses and minuses, which we can go into here at length if need be. The main advantage of doing prizes as a side pot, no matter the service, is we have more control over disbursement (e.g. at $50 give top 3 teams $200 each).

Given that, we have some decisions to make. If you haven't already, have a look at the thread linked at the top of the page where the new tiers are outlined. The upshot is that Niv is going to take his $240 cut, and then a progressively larger administrative share of any leftover pool used for prizes. If we stay at $50, the only real impact we'd see is the first place prize taking a nosedive to $200 (essentially, a tax on me... which is what Pat suggested over on the ottoneu community board).

Stopping in to note the great battle we have going for second place heading into the final day of the season. Truly excellent work by Josh and Jim to keep up the fight. I'm also here to address 2019. Seems Niv has settled in some price points, with the only constant being he needs to make at least $240 per league. As we go forward, I find it useful to think within that framework: we're paying $240 to maintain Firehouse Roto each year, and everyone puts in a $20 share toward it.

Just here to note that Tim Tebow is hitting north of .250 at AA. Jimmy, you are so going to regret dropping him. No I have not yet made the trip up to Binghamton, though only due that I'm all but certain I will soon be able to see him debut at Citi Field. And now, as you were.

Good thoughts here so far from Chris, Josh, and Mike. Capital of you, Jimmy, to offer up your expansive cap space but I don't think that's getting it done. We do have some time to figure it out. My post on the thread takes a specific tack but I'm open to various solutions that keeps Firehouse going.
-
I will volunteer my $112 cap space this year to Niv to keep everything the same.
-
Another option that a user brought up in the thread is to play a $20 (no prize) league and adminster prize money outside of Ottoneu. Obviously this puts the onus on someone to take & distribute money but that has gotten easier with PayPal/Venmo etc. There's also a few websites tailored to handling fantasy and NCAA bracket money pools. Just a thought if we don't want to go to $100 and don't like the higher rake.
-
Yeah hopefully they address the price structure and lower the rake for $50 leagues. I just don't see the incentive to keep playing if he's taking that much out of the prize pool.
-
Reading the thread it seems like these decisions MAY not be final yet - or at least the prize structure may be changing in response to player feedback. $100 is a tough ask - would be the highest stakes league I play in and the point about it being an impediment for long term rebuilds is well taken. Not sure I have a final thought yet but good to open up the discussion early.
-
Re: absolute entry costs, that's generally treated as a to taste thing for game players. You play at the level you are comfortable and what operators can afford to provide. So, are we all okay at $100? I was okay paying a ~25% rake here ($50 & $100 are both fine by me) because I'm okay with hippy dippy user supported things and wanted to see Niv succeed, but the new price schedule is batshit and just seems like the wrong move if he's trying to make this a full time thing.
-
Briefly, we should be able to reconfigure the league per whatever cost structure this group will tolerate; Niv has offered to do so in the past. Re: >40% rake, that's abject stupidity and double what is standard for game operators in this space. He's going to destroy his player base if he's serious about that, at least at the $50 tier.
-
Also, FWIW, going to $100 keeps us at the 25% rake. But, man, if you're rebuilding a team to compete in a few years, it stings a little knowingly throwing away $100 a year for multiple years, to be honest.
-
I've never played in a league where the host site took a rake, having only done espn, yahoo and recently fantrax. So I was surprised learning that this year they'd keep 25%. But joined because a keeper league sounded fun and was flattered that Chris invited me. So next year, it's going to a 40% rake? Wow. Is a rake uncommon? I'm assuming a 40% rake is. Chris, maybe you could provide some insight as to the justification for the rake in general.
-
Yeah that doesn't seem worth playing for just the top 2 teams getting paid out. I would probably be in favor of going up to $100/year if we have that option.
-
The new pricing structure absolutely screws anyone playing in a $50 league. I'll likely reply to that thread later tonight which will lay out this line of thinking a bit further but in short: is it still worth it to keep Firehouse Roto going at that price point?
-
