Doesnt sound like OOTP has unanimous consent. I am like Hitch - I would if everyone else did and you needed me to. Otherwise I’ll sit it out
-
Yeah, I'm gonna pass on OOTP, too.
-
I’ve looked at these and definitely want to play the stat-o-matic. I think it covers the gambit from being able to set it on autopilot (but an autopilot that you set the specifics for) to actually watching individual games play out (which would be cool every once in a while). I say we setup a league right now with as many of us that are in, then give us a week to find enough others to fill it. After that throw it open to the public to complete it (but I think we’ll be able to piece it together).
-
Spring walk a bout ? Sounds like Crocadile Dundee
-
I'll probably take a pass on the OOTP too.
-
I'm interested in a sim league to combat the lack of baseball once my spring walk about is done in a week or so.
-
SOM apparently has a 6-team league option, which would be super-teams. For OOTP we could exclude all the teams projected for 95+ wins (LAD, NYY, HOU) and 75 or fewer wins (BAL, SF, KC, MIA, DET, SEA, PIT) and just choose from the 20 in the middle. The fewer human players we have in OOTP (mlb option), the more AI teams...and we may be playing different games. I don’t know how much we can tell the PIT AI front office to “go for it this year” rather than what they’re supposed to do.

I’m afraid I’m out on this activity, guys. Don’t think I want to invest the time to learn a new game. Guess I would if everyone else did and you needed me to. Otherwise I’ll sit it out
-
I would be up for either, and would defer to the majority opinion if we can get enough people to make it worthwhile. What do you think the threshold would be? 8? 10? I think we could make MLB franchises work in OOTP, either by selecting teams that are similar in expectations or spotting poor teams a few wins.
-
Here are a couple reviews of the SOM product, just the first ones I came across, 1 longer YouTube review ( https://sportsenjoyed.net/afr-live-review-strat-o-matic-baseball-daily/ ), 1 shorter written review ( https://www.beyondtheboxscore.com/2016/6/15/11938924/strat-o-matic-baseball-365-review ). Looks a lot easier to set up than OOTP, maybe more efficient for a do-something fill-in for real/Otto baseball.

Not anymore
-
I’ve never played any version of strat-o-metic, but if we just want to play something that’s based on a simulation some SOM-online game (like https://365.strat-o-matic.com/ ) would just be easier? I think we’d have to start from scratch with that. Brew, you play any of these games?

Everyone would need to buy a copy of OOTP (about $40), we’d need an ftp site to host our game. (It’s definitely not as simple as Otto, but you can delegate day-to-day managerial decisions to a virtual manager.) Any action would be on the side, OOTP doesn’t facilitate that. We could consider using our existing FCA side pot, since a shorter real season is more of a crap shoot.

Using the existing MLB franchises gives us that...but someone has to be the Orioles (well, we’d let the AI run the Orioles, but we wouldn’t all be the team we might prefer, though I’d give the Braves to Kevin and take the Rays if necessary). It’s also hard to decide who wins in a 1-year simulation (1-year isn’t really the point of OOTP), though we could look at some measure like “who most improves on PECOTA’s expected winning percentage”—maybe the Orioles would be attractive!

I think the options we’re considering all have pluses and minuses. Using our FCA lineups is attractive, but we’d immediately get out of sync, and the games are different so some existing lineups might not be ideal. Drafting entirely new teams is, well, a chore, and we’d have to make some decisions about how far to take it. Like using FCA lineups, we wouldn’t be taking advantage of the really cool benefit of OOTP, managing the entire system of each franchise.

So far only 4 of us have said we’d be interested in playing OOTP, which isn’t enough to make it worthwhile. People who aren’t familiar with it but might be interested should at least take a look at the online manual ( https://manuals.ootpdevelopments.com/index.php?man=ootp21&page=ootpb_online_leagues ) and maybe some reviews to get some idea of the game.

Though I guess with a one time league, rebuilding teams may not to play with our current rosters.
-
Regarding OOTP, while I don’t feel strongly about it and am in no matter, my order of preference would be to 1) recreate our current rosters, 2) draft new teams, 3) take current major league franchises. I have no experience with this though, I presume you have to setup some account and pay some fee? Does it have some kind of payout? If not, I assume we’ll want to setup our own pot?

Wow Jeremy is making a big splash

Nothing in particular , cheap keeper level talent in genetal

I’m looking at the current version of OOTP (21). It looks like we can do any of the things we’ve talked about by setting up an online game. I lean towards playing with existing MLB franchises, partly because I think it’s less work to set up, and partly because it might be interesting to sell the future of the Braves (or Rays, or As, etc) for a 2020 run. I haven’t played since OOTP15, and I’ve only played against the AI. Any of you guys have more recent or more relevant experience with OOTP?

Henry , have you been hitting the wine more on evenings these days ?

Love the idea of a fantasy season tied to an OOTP recreation, btw. I didn't sign up for one of the leagues that Niv was promoting because I figured it would be too big a time investment. But now, baseball withdrawal is setting in...
-
Youngest son is 12. Oldest son, 18, would rather play online games. Daughter, 15, hides in her room and video chats with friends. Shelter in place has definitely pushed us to new ideas for boredom prevention. The 12 year old is a champ. Spent the first week of no school building the fire pit and is now teaching himself how to forage (focus on greens, not mushrooms, to start).
-
How old is your son?
-
I've started playing a daily game of chess with my son.
-
Also everyone on my block is poised to go quickly
-
I don’t love Devers, but was best young mlb blue-chipper I was offered. Would like to trade him for comparable talent/surplus in OF if that exists
-
You have to love this. It turns out that they’re not showing the entire Nats post season, just the games they won.
-
I’m in for whichever option people settle on. Please hurry though. The lack of baseball is killing me. Locally here today there’re starting to replay the Nationals wild card, playoff, and World Series games and I’m seriously considering watching them all.
-
Option 3, which I didn’t even think of. I’m pretty sure that is possible—I think there’s a “fantasy draft” option in league setup. I’ll take a look at the latest version, but probably not until tomorrow. I have a (online, of course) bridge tournament—yes, I’m old—this afternoon.

If there is interest I am definitely up for OOTP. Either recreating our rosters, drafting new squads, or using MLB franchises. I suspect drafting new teams may be the most fun, if that is possible.
-
Speaking of which...anyone want to play OOTP? I haven’t used it in a few years, but I *think* we could either (1) just pick actual MLB franchises and run 12 off them for the season (and let the bots run the rest) or (2) *possibly* create our teams/rosters in OOTP, run them as franchises, and let the machine simulate game play.

Here’s his season so far in the baseball-reference simulation, which uses OOTP instead of strat-o-matic (I think there’s a lot of zips in OOTP): https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/k/kieboca01.shtml#all_batting_sim

I think they’d use some sort of projection—either their own or a public one—that doesn’t rely only on last year, and that translates minor league performance to MLB expectation some way. So you’d expect Kieboom to be about an average (to slightly below) hitter, with a wide range of outcomes depending on which simulation the game actually uses. So in some simulations he’s George Brett, but mostly he’s not.

start o matic is deep metrics for last years stats to make this years cards, so i wonder how they are doing guts like Carter

how is Carter Kieboom doing in simulation?

Okay, so I guess I’m officially bored, as I now spend part of my mornings going over the Nat’s box scores. I just wish Ottoneu would score these games so we could have a simulated season. Think we could convince Niv?
-
Quick! Somebody send the Whaaambulance to Jeremy's house.
-
What did Mike F’ng Trout, the 3rd best player of all time, manage in this simulation? Cause he’s currently being wildly disrespected by participants here...
-
Aaron Nola struck out 12 mets in his opening debut, max Kepler hit 3 hr !
-
Its pretty cool , has complete box scores for every game that would have been played

For those of you are really bored, there is the Stat o Mastic season simulator with daily results

Yeah, man, it’s gonna be so brutal on multiple industries before this ends. Just massive unemployment numbers are coming. We’re keeping 3 kids (20-somethings) employed doing takeout only, and taking a loss to do it. Hoping at the end of all this there’s less competition and we make it all back, but who the fuck knows.
-
"Fifty percent of the restaurants that just shut down across this country will never reopen." I hope he's not right, but I suspect he might be.
