I wonder if there is some way to compare this to DFA'ing a player. Probably not. Regardless, whether it is in the spirit of ottoneu or not, it is allowed under the rules, so I don't see how why it is fair to hold it against teams who take advantage.
-
Seems like you feel jaded just because you didn't know and others did. I don't see a problem with rules allowing this. It will take me 3 months, half a season to get Colabello's salary down to $1 from $5. To me that feels like a pretty good punishment.

If we had known we could have went much higher in the auctions for Betances and Davis. Two relievers that would have changed our seasons on a Pts/IP basis. This is this first time I've felt jaded towards this league
-
Anyway, related note - Deadspin has internal documents from the Astros about their trade talks. That's pretty cool, right? Someone should gets those from an interesting team.

I don't think it's a big deal. He still has to spend $8 in the first place and then keep a $4 cap penalty once he cuts him for 30 days and only after waiting that out, he can cut him again to save $2. I'd be fine with changing next year, though.

WAR Children bid 8 dollars on Colabello the first time knowing if he began to struggle he'd just get his money back eventually. I think that's BS
-
This loop hole explains why we always bid too low on FA's. We always concerned ourselves with what if the player is a flash in the pan (Colabello) and how much would it hurt us to drop him.
-
The fact it took so long to see doesn't make it okay. The goal of OttoNeu was to make a little more realistic fantasy league, one of those changes was punishing a team for poor acquisitions.
-
I think Jeets should drop Harvey as an experiment just to see what happens
-
I wish I knew. No big deal.
-
How big a deal is it if it took you a year and half to notice it? I've been doing it since early last season.
-
FBag's is right.
-
Ok, I won't be able to convince you. That's cool. I don't care what the rule is as long as I know it ahead of time. So, whatever.

I think the point has been lost altogether. Isn't the point, put simply, that you shouldn't be able to keep trimming fat off a salary you signed a player for?
-
JV and Harvey aren't really good comparisons. One was $45 the other was $17. One has thrown close to 1900 innings and the other close to 300. Obviously someone would stash Harvey.
-
Harvey's a good example on my team. No way I'd drop him because I'd risk one of the rest of you picking him up $9 or $10 and I wouldn't even be able to bid on him.

Sure, if he got run over by a bus. But let's say he had Tommy John surgery. You'd drop him and maybe no one picks him up for $23, then you add him and drop him again. I can pretty much guarantee someone else would pick him up and stash him for $12.

We spent $45 on JV. If he, god forbid seriously why am I even typing this, if he had hurt his shoulder there is no way anyone would have added him.
-
You're obviously free to send an email and I couldn't even care less if they changed it. But I doubt the $40 pitcher example would happen. $40 pitchers are like David Price and Strasburg. Someone would pick those guys up at $10 and probably at $20

That's what I was thinking. I'm shooting an email to OttoNeu to see if that's the case or if it was intended to be that way.
-
I agree. If you drop a contract, you should be liable for half of it until someone else brings him up for auction. I have a feeling, however, that it may not be as easy to program into the website.
-
To me, and my partner, it seems like a very non-FanGraphs/OttoNeu way of doing things, but to each their own.
-
That means after 90 days you could recoup almost 90% of the $40 you spent on him.
-
This is an example of something that could happen. Add a $40 pitcher, he gets hurt so you cut him May 1st get $20 after penalty. June 1st add him for $20 then cut him get $10 after penalty. July 1st add him for $10 get $ 5 after penalty.
-
Since I learned of this, 15 minutes ago, I just auction up all 4 of my over $1 penalties. This means at at the very least. I will earn myself $4to$5. Personally, I think it's strange. Not a huge deal though.
-
That seems like a pretty large loophole in a league like this. I might send a message to Niv.
-
i.e. you have to be willing to let your competition pick up the player at half price to cut them, so it really only seems to affect the cheapest players.
Yeah Jeets! on

I disagree. It only affects very minor players and only saves a couple bucks at most. If you drop a player that anyone wants, you have a pretty decent shot at losing them, like what happened with Prince Fielder.

-
Yes, but at less of a penalty. That's the point.
-
If I picked up someone I previously owned the player penalty goes away and it becomes salary. Then if I drop him again it goes back to a penalty.
SchanuWow! on

That eliminates the cap penalty, which goes away whenever the player you dropped is picked up by anyone. Then I can drop him again, and my cap penalty for dropping a $3 player is $2. So I would cut the cap penalty by $1 in the process.
Yeah Jeets! on
June 30, 2014 12:47 PM

It doesn't add together. Here's an example - if I drop a $6 player, I get a $3 cap penalty. I can't add him again for 30 days, but anyone else can add him in that time. After 30 days, though, I can pick him up for $3.
Yeah Jeets! on

I only see $2 of cap penalties for Colabello, but you added and dropped him twice so it should actually be $5.
-
You can do it every 30 days, it's the same penalty as always, half salary.

Wait, if you drop a player you can then re-add and drop without additional penalty?

I've done it, too. Agree with War Children - makes sense.

Maybe I'm being obvious about it but others have been doing the same thing. I don't see a problem with it, really only works if no one wants the players at all.

We are in last so we don'y have a ton of room to talk...but what in the world WAR Children? I'm thinking we might adopt your add/drop strategy.

I like to think I'm hanging in there too...a second half surge is coming
