I swear, the guy who's won three straight championships complains more on this message board than the rest of the league combined.

Hey, remember a year ago when I had a healthy Darvish, Fernandez, and Wainwright?

Lawrie's no longer a Jay, so I figured I needed to change my team name. Like Mark Buehrle, this is how I plan to be successful this year...

If anyone wants to join a points league that's auctioning on Saturday, I'm in The Lisabuela Fall League and we've got three open spots for $4.99 at http://ottoneu.fangraphs.com/claimteams. I'm not the commissioner over there, if that affects the desirability of the league one way or the other.

And last year, Rime chose to carry J Fernandez's $17 salary all year rather than cut him. Now he has the same decision with Darvish. Injuries happen.

Responding to Fish's question about salaries for DL60'ed guys -- no, you don't get the money back on your salary cap, just the extra roster spot. And also that doesn't happen until they go on the official 60-day DL, which won't happen until the MLB team needs the 40-man roster room.
-
OK, that kills it. 5 people against is plenty to stay with the rules as written. I just looked it up, and I apparently misremembered four years ago: a similar proposal got voted down then too. Will somebody point that out to me in a year when the UCLs start popping again?
-
My vote is to stay with the current rules and not allow any cuts. While it's well-intentioned, I think this particular game setup means owners should be forced to deal with these kinds of long-term decisions (sunk costs due to injury, etc.) without the benefit of an escape/budget boost prior to the auction. Ultimately, I'm fine with whatever the majority decides on the issue and it's not a major deal since a penalty will accompany either outcome, but that's my stance.
-
Just throwing my two cents here...I'm OK with either outcome, but if I had to vote, I would say that rosters should remain locked. Like others have said, you get the roster spot back, and I think it's better to keep the standard rules. Otherwise, a last place team can just pick up the injured guys for a keeper
-
I guess I don't understand the reason for the long lock in time. In most other keeper leagues that I have played in, the date for setting keepers is a week or so before the auction/draft. I don't know what a 90 day window gains you, even if you cannot grab a player on auction/draft day you'll still know who you might want to target in a trade or if there is a roster move...
-
I don't feel strongly either way, but I would vote for allowing pre-draft cuts for players who are out for the season, with the half-salary penalty
-
To reiterate, the only players I am suggesting a rule to allow pre-draft cuts are players who have been reported as out for the year. Right now, they tie up your budget during the auction and take up a roster spot.
FYI: If you click the All Messages link at the bottom of this page, you can delete your duplicate postings.
-
It seems I am in the minority here but I dont really have much sympathy for this situation. I think rosters should be locked between keeper deadline and draft. If I or anyone else gets hosed, yeah it sucks, but thats how things break.

Don't we have a 60 day DL for this sort of thing? I seem to recall that if you have a player on that, you get the additional roster spot (i.e., you could expand to 41 players). What I don't recall is what happens with the player salary - I thought you also got that added into your max budget, but I may be mis-remembering that aspect.

Sorry I didn't mean to start a new discussion. You're right about the keeper deadline and enabling free cuts before the draft - I'm still not totally accustomed to this format, so I shouldn't rock the boat here.

If we had held the auction already (like a lot of leagues), then we wouldn't even be talking about this. The advantage of waiting closer to the season for the auction is that you know where all the free agents have signed and who is going to get starting jobs. But the disadvantage is not being able to cut a player who gets hurt in ST.

I don't think we need a rule change, but if the league wants to put it up to a vote, then fine. But who will be eligible to be cut? Anyone who is injured? Anyone who is on the 60 day DL? Roberto Big Piece suggests you should be able to cut anyone at all before the auction, but that would make the whole Jan. 31 keeper deadline pointless. Not to mention the fact that as a new owner in the league he got the chance to cut anyone he wanted when he inherited his team in Feb.

I'm fine with the latest suggestion. Basic roster moves like cutting players should be allowed before the draft I think.
-
I am completely indifferent on this issue and fine with however the league decides.

So do we need to have some sort of vote on this proposal? Or anyone with further discussion?
-
I don't have a huge problem with however this ends up going, but Pillar's compromise there sounds reasonable. The extra-tough thing about losing a player in the preseason is that you can't cut them and even get half their salary back, hamstringing you for the auction. Afterwards there may not even be players you want to spend that much salary on. Now: do we call this the "Darvish Rule" or the "Stroman Rule"?
-
Here's my revised proposal: If a player is out for the year and you want to cut him, post publicly on this message board a week in advance of the draft (or before the draft for players hurt that week). On the morning of the draft, I will cut him from your team WITH a cap penalty. This will free up half the cap room for the auction without affecting the cap penalty length compared to cutting immediately after the auction.
-
OK, experiment reveals a middle option. I could let people cut players, with penalty, before the auction if they're out for the year. This would free up their space during the auction and start the penalty timer ticking earlier without totally letting them off the hook.
-
Running a commish tools experiment, cutting and re-adding a player to my roster. Commish transactions inconsistently show up in the transaction log, so it might look like only half happened.
-
Oh, I never thought of that. That makes sense.
-
As I understand the rules, if you cut a $30 salary, it's a $15 penalty. 30 days later, you can start an auction for that player. If nobody else wants him, and you "win" him back, you can just cut him again, and the penalty is 50% again. So now it would be $8. Keep doing that every 30 days and eventually the penalty will be just $1 (although that would take 4 months

I agree with Roar and Lawrie. I don't see a distinction between a spring training injury that happens after the keeper date, and an injury that happens after the draft. Both stink.

I tend to agree with Roar, although I must be missing something because I don't understand how a $30 salary turns into a $4 penalty 60 days later. It doesn't make much of a difference to me at the moment though because I won't be cutting Stroman either way.
-
In most every money league I have ever played in, if you have a keeper get injured between the roster set date and the auction/draft, you have been allowed to cut them. I really dislike the randomness of penalizing an owner that gets unlucky.
-
Injuries are a part of the game, whether they happen in March or July. Besides, the way the salary cap rules are written, the penalty for cutting a player doesn't last very long, anyway. A $30 salary that is cut is only an $4 penalty 60 days later.

Does anyone else feel like every fantasy baseball season starts off with a game of russian roulette between all the keepers? I haven't even been all that unlucky and it still sucks a lot of the fun out of the beginning of the season. Considering reinstating the rule that you can drop any player ruled out for the season before the auction, penalty free. What do you guys think?
-
I widespreadly demand it! Haha, no... we can make it work. Just thought I'd check.
-
Unless there's widespread demand, I'm not going to move the draft earlier. An hour earlier is 9am my time, and I have a hockey game that night that won't be over until at least 10:45pm. I don't want to wake up that early and go to bed that late on a Sunday, sorry.
-
Quick question: is it possible to move the auction an hour or so earlier? Looks like I will be interstate traveling that afternoon, and being able to leave earlier without missing anything would be good. If it's set at that time for a good reason, then no worries.
-
Sorry I went a little AWOL. But I'm alive and will be able to make the auction.

Hi! Hmm, what happened to SabrTooth?
-
Hi all! Pleasure to join the league!
-
29th works for me
-
To be clear - the 29th is fine, I just do not want another auction scheduled for the 28th...

Saturday March 28th is my Money League Auction, so a different day would be good for me.
-
Roberto Big Piece and the 69ers's trade block has been updated!

I'm somewhat booked up in March, but no need to schedule around me. I only have $18 to spend in the auction.
