There is no way to know for sure. But the Nats are finally free of Werth's huge contract, and they have a lot of money coming off the books next year. Harper is a free agent next year and I'll bet the Nats are tempted to go "all in" before he's gone. The Nats stand to lose 11 free agents this off-season, more than any other team. They will need to sign somebody. They have the money, the motivation, and they need OF help.
-
Regarding Stanton, I think the Marlins will get a fair amount for him. I lot of baseball people are saying the Giants or Angels, I can't see that. Giants and the Angels have very little in their respective farm systems. Once again, I come back the Cardinals if they miss out on Hosmer and JD. They recognize that they are missing power bat and I think the Cardinals have a lot of nice tradeable pieces. I can't believe it, I sound like a Cardinals fan. ugh

Absolutely no way the Nats sign JD. The Nats are looking to conserve money, one of the reasons Dusty wasn't rehired. I think JD either stays in Arizona or goes to St. Louis. If St. Louis doesn't sign JD, they will go hard after Hosmer. LuCroy, who cares? Arrieta, I going with Baltimore or back with the Cubs.

The Marlins will find buyers for Stanton. He is 27 coming off a .410 wOBA (better than any Machado year, tied with Bryce Harper, not far behind Trout) & despite his size he has a decent glove. His contract will reduce the cost in a trade. Most GMs are more concerned with winning now than the cost of the decline years. If GMs don't win, they get replaced, so they might not care what happens to the team 8 years from now. Let the next GM figure it out.
-
I could see all of those happening. You think Stanton might end up somewhere other than Miami next season?
-
Predictions for free agent signings: JD Martinez will sign with the Nats; Eric Hosmer will sign with Boston; Yu Darvish will sign with SF; Lucroy will re-sign with Denver; Arrieta will be a Yankees.
-
Well that double play really killed the mood. Good to see Kershaw in game 7. Wonder if we will see Verlander later.
-
My take away from this series so far is - never throw a slider, and throw a lot of curves. Dodgers have their work cut out for them, but in this crazy series I won't count them out until the game is over.
-
One benefit of living in the Pacific time zone they aren't as bad. Too bad you missed last nights! Might've been best world series game I've ever seen.
-
I have watched every game, but they are all so late. It has been worth losing sleep again this year. But if they could start games earlier, especially on weekends, it would be so much better.
-
So far I have picked games 2 and 5 when I am too tired to stay up late to watch the full WS games and have to get up too early the next day for work. For game 6 and 7, I will be sure to post if I head to bed so everyone else here can be sure to watch the super-exciting, crazy rest of the game.

OK league owners. You have until next Friday (11/3) to identify a friend or family member you would like to join the league. If we don't have anyone by then, I will open it up to the full Ottoneu community.
-
Hi Dirt Dogs. Thanks for giving us an update. We will put out the call for a new owner and transfer ownership as soon as that person is identified. You will not have to do anything else.
-
Actually, i'm not sure exactly how to leave. Nimrods, if you can as a commissioner, remove me as an owner, that would do the trick. Thanks again y'all

Hey Guys, I have to apologize. I've been completely absent this year and feel bad about it. I wish i could give more time to this team but it's just not in the cards. I'll be leaving the league today, to allow a new owner to come in and have time to review the team and arbitration before it ends. Best of luck

Yeah I'll probably end up at least checking all of mine and maybe changing some based on what everyone else has done. It is interesting that the most allocations got 8th last year.
-
I have changed my allocations a few times based on how the allocations are going. I allocate based on who has the most significantly under-valued players. Breakout players under $5 or so tend to get most of my attention.
-
This is my first time through the arbitration process. League results so far are interesting. Fielder of Dreams is the only team to receive a maximum allocation - a perfect 24 for 24 so far, but probably not something he was hoping to accomplish! Next closest to "perfection" are Nimrods at 20/21, then Spa and Squirrels at 19/21. 55 different players have received allocations. I don't know what I was expecting, but there are certainly a few allocations that I would have never guessed.
-
Boring day in my soul-crushing bureaucrat job, with dull grey skies and nothing to do... If anybody is interested in talking potential trades, I have lots of free time. I have high-end players I won't be able to afford next year, so I am open to offers if anybody is interested in taking an aggressive approach next year. BTW - the series is exciting again this year. The first 2 games have been fun to watch, even without a rooting interest.
-
Welcome to the league Andy! Glad to have you here! Wow that pennant is awesome, I love how you included players on it!
-
Wow. That would be the most impressive pennant so far. You have raised the bar for future pennants.
-
Speaking of the pennant... I finished a draft of the 2017 pennant, but still need to get confirmation from Spa City that I got his team colors and the rest of the details right. Everyone can take a look at the draft version of the pennant at https://www.dropbox.com/s/r3ajdx0ohj3z5ut/2017%20Pennant.pdf?dl=0 Also, I am still trying to figure out how to get it made since this is my first time doing this in place of our dear, departed Flint.
-
Andy - Welcome to the only league (that I know of) with an actual pennant for the winner every year. You will need to decide on your team's colors for the pennant next year. As a tradeaholic, I am always open to trade ideas. I'm looking to completely rebuild my overly-expensive roster this year, so when 11/14 rolls around feel free to send offers if there are players on my roster you are interested in adding for '18.
-
We have a new team owner! Andy the Twins fan has taken over Summer of George. So welcome Andy to Flags Fly Forever.
-
We are still looking for a replacement owner for the Summer of George. If anyone has a friend they would like to invite, please do so. If I do not have a new owner by later this work week, I will post an opening on the Community board.

They better not trade Benintendi and Devers. I agree they don't need to change much to win it.
-
If Dombrowski trades Benintendi or Devers he should not only be fired he should be indicted. They don't need huge changes - they already made a big improvement getting rid of Farrell. I agree Cubs will probably need to trade for pitching, but I suspect Addison Russell will be their best option in a trade. Baez can win gold gloves at SS, and Happ could handle 2B. That would let them keep Schwarber's bat in LF and Almora's glove in CF.
-
Like the Cubs, the Red Sox will have to trade one of their young stars like Devers or Benintendi in order to obtain a star player. They don't have enough value in their farm system by itself. I could see the Red Sox going hard after Hosmer. The Cubs will be forced to trade Schwarber, Happ or Almora along with prospects to improve their starting pitching if they don't resign Arrieta or sign Darvish (doubtful).

I don't see the Sox paying market value for stars while they are still paying the absurd contracts of Rusney Castillo, Allen Craig & Panda (all still on the books), & Hanley (0.6 WAR in 3 seasons with the Sox). I see them signing a mid-tier LH hitter (maybe Granderson, Bruce and/or Yonder Alonso) and an IF (maybe re-sign Nunez). But I'll bet you they don't splurge for a major contract. They will try to trade for a star player from a rebuilding team.
-
I apologize for that Squirrels. Spa City, are you nutz!

I actually never mentioned a trade for Abreu. I don't think the will get much at all through trade this year. I said everything they get will probablt have to be through the free market.
-
I would love to see Pirates shop McCutchen, Cole, Harrison, Cervelli, Nova, Marte & Polanco. Bucs have solid prospects in Meadows, Max Moroff, Kevin Newman, and Cole Tucker (a 6'3" switch hitting SS with speed & projectable bat), & some pitching talent in Keller, Kingham, Glasnow. They can't contend in '18, but if they reduce payroll, add a few near ready prospects, & add a couple of free agents for '19, they could pull an Astros/Cubs style rebuild.
-
I can see the Pirates making the playoffs, as they do have a talented roster. But the problem is, so does most of the NL Central. I like what the Brewers are doing and I think the Cardinals have a ton of upside. I really like the Cardinals potential, especially their starting pitching. I see the Cardinals getting either JD or Hosmer this offseason which would give them a better than average starting lineup. They do need to shore up their bullpen, but so do the Cubs and Pirates.

Groome has physical talent, but he has two big negative attributes: his mental makeup, and he has been injured twice.

Meanwhile, the Pirates won't be in the market for anybody. I think they missed their window, but they are reluctant to admit that they are not contenders.
-
I could be wrong, but I see Groome as a definite top prospect. He is a huge LHP with a really good 2 seamer and an even better curveball. One of my many biases is that I love curveball pitchers, and I probably tend to over value them. But I don't know of many minor leaguer pitchers I would prefer over Groome - definitely not more than a handful.
-
Flying Squirrels, why not have the Red Sox sign Otani along with JD and Hosmer? Do you think in 2018 the Red Sox will sign Harper and Machado as well?
Winnetka Cubs on

I think the Flying Squirrels is a very optimistic and somewhat delusional fan. After what the White Sox received for Eaton last year, there is no way that Travis, Chavis and Groome are anywhere near enough for Abreu. Groome is no longer considered a "top prospect" pitcher and never should have been. Based on his poor minor league performances and now forearm strain (Tommy John?) his trade value has diminished. However if you feel Travis and Chavis are such good prospects, why not k

Listening to the Cubs v Nats game at work. Strasburg is pitching a great game so the Nats will probably lose, because apparently that's what they do when their starter pitches amazing.
-
I was at the Bartman game, Lester picking Zimmerman wasn't that far from surrealness. I know not a real word.

I can't see them trading JBJ, but who knows? Dombrowski does things differently. JBJ has hit 53 HR over the past 2.5 seasons. He draws walks, hits for decent power, plays elite defense in a very difficult CF at Fenway, bats LH, and does not yet cost nearly fair market value. I would treat him as a core player. Dombrowski tends to treat prospects as fungible assets, so if I were Groome, Travis or Chavis I would not invest in a permanent house in the Boston area.
-
Also John Farrell has officially been let go.
-
I think they sign J.D. Martinez, and I could see them signing Eric Hosmer. I think they get more this offseason from the free agent market instead of from trades. If they can keep Thornburg, Reed, Smith, and Kimbrel all healthy they have a pretty dangerous bullpen. They should also trade away JBJ, his bat is not good and Betts and Benintendi would both be above average Center Fielders.
-
I think Sox prospect Michael Chavis is better than he gets credit for. If the Sox offered Jason Groome, Sam Travis and Chavis, I would be surprised if the Sox declined. Abreu hits, but he is a defensively-challenged, 31-year-old 1B. He is of little value to the Pale Hose except in a trade. Dombrowski trades all his pitching prospects, and the White Sox are focused on collecting ostensibly "top prospect" pitchers like Groome. I could see this happening.
-
One big problem with the Red Sox, Dombrowski drained the Red Sox farm system. The Red Sox don't have the pieces to make a trade for the likes of Abreu without trading a Devers or Benintendi.

Sox need a deeper bullpen so they don't kill Sale's arm. If Smith and Thornburg are healthy, they would help. But I think they will be in on Andrew Miller if he hits the market. They also need a power hitter at 1B ; in a record year for HR, the Sox were relatively powerless. Jose Abreu seems like a Dombrowski trade target.
-
Like Spa City and I discussed before, Sale normally fades at the end of the season. This season he was worked even more than he was with the White Sox in prior seasons. There was no reason to believe that Sale was going to have a strong postseason since he was already fading the last six weeks in the season. It will be interesting what the Red Sox do in the offseason, they clearly have a ways to go.

He was pitching a great game, I think he just got left in one inning too long. That inning should have been Addison Reed's.
-
Sale managed to allow a season killing HR even in a game he didn't start. In the 2nd half, his K rate went up quite a bit, and he BB and HR rates also went up a lot. His HR rate almost doubled. I think it is as simple as it seems - he started pitching like a Closer and and he is sacrificing everything else for more Ks. That is the zeitgeist I suppose.
-
Well Red Sox are out... Rooting for the Nationals now, and a Indians v Nationals World Series.
