I'll also be tracking everything here. I'd appreciate if you also informed me of any donations you make. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1E4XuFHNmzWJ8-MC1hj3Yh-abCIg3ckFflYlPHC4wYAA/edit?usp=sharing

I think it is the latter. Ultimately we keep doing this because of the good cause and enjoying the competition. But we need both to keep it going.
-
That sounds great, too, Neil. I don't know if we should first be looking for people we think will be good owners and donate the most amount of money, or if we should just be looking for really strong owners willing to make some sort of significant contribution. If it's the latter, I already know a guy who I think would be a great fit. He's been clued into what the situation would be (highest bidder gets first choice of team) and he's enthusiastic about it. That would mean we need just 3 more.
-
I agree. I think the beauty of ottoneu is its simplicity regarding the rules. I appreciate its straightforwardness. A lot of it was in response to the trade but eventually things were worked out and the best team won. I vote to keep things the same and we can police things as they happen.
-
Happy to use my (modest but useful) twitter following to drum up interest in spots. We've had success auctioning off the spots in the past, although perhaps the lure of playing with Dave helped!

We need to sort that out. Personally, I am in favor of just leaving things be for now, but if the rest of the league wants to put our heads together and decide which of those rule changes we might want to implement, we can do that. To fill you in, Brad, all of that was basically in response to a big trade that went down this summer that was nearly vetoed but ultimately stood.
-
I proposed the reset as a clean slate idea bc to generate interest and bc a third of the league was being turned over. I see both sides of the argument. I do think it will be difficult to bring in four new owners and then pull the rug out from under them and basically start over. Well I think a reset could be helpful it might be better to secure good/active owners and play out the season as is.
-
Since there isn't much support for the full reboot option, I think we should just treat this as a straight ownership replacement. No need to complicate it. Speaking of complications, Dave forwarded some weird proposed rules about budget limits and half seasons when I joined. Were those enacted or do we still need to sort that out too?
-
I think that's a perfect idea. Before we get too far ahead of ourselves, though, we need to officially decide what we're going to do with the rosters. I am in favor of keeping everything as it is and letting the new owners make whatever cuts they want to make. Obviously there have been some other ideas thrown out there, so we may need to have a vote at some point.
-
Agreed, I suggest we find 4 qualified owners then give them choice of roster based on who donates the most.
-
I definitely agree that donations should be part of the recruiting process, but I also think having really good owners is essential. I think it's important that we find people who are active, engaged, and competent.
-
We should auction off the rosters to the highest bidder!
-
I already have one guy who's really active in Ottoneu, he's on Slack, and he sounds interested in making a donation as part of the process.
-
I think that would be great, Brad.
-
If you'd like, I can write an article about the league for RotoGraphs next Monday - for recruitment and also for fundraising too.
-
Glad you are the Commissioner Ben. I’m good with anyone that can recommend replacements and/or using the Slack community to fill the vacancies.
-
Hello everyone, I would just like to publicly announce that Dave handed over commissioner responsibilities to me this morning. I feel a special connection to this league and look forward to carrying on its strong legacy with the rest of you. It seems that our first order of business will be figuring out what to do with the rosters of our departing league-mates — Dave, Greendale, SeaTac, and Gedman — all of whom will be missed. Best of luck to the four of you.
-
Congratulations indeed Dave! It was a lot of fun to make bad trades with you all these years. Despite tons of managing and writing obligations, you were a great and mindful commissioner for this league. I'll continue to give to causes to screw cancer in the league's honor.
-
I finally built a contending team yet I am the one who proposed the reset. I think a healthy league is one in which most of the owners are engaged and invested. I play in several ottoneu leagues and find my interest gravitating towards the leagues I am contending in. Ottoneu is a long process and it takes a few years to build a team that has a chance to win. A clean slate every 5-6 years might be useful. I’m ok with a no but I think we either go all the way or scrap the idea. It will be tough.

As far as the league goes, I like my team but I understand the reset would solve some of the issues with turning over teams. I would do it if that's what others want.
-
Congrats, Dave! You will be missed. Best of luck with the new endeavor.
-
But to be clear, my preference would be for us to get to keep however many players we want to keep ahead of the Jan. 31 keeper deadline. In terms of how we handle new owners, I don't have a strong opinion one way or the other.
-
In terms of the future of this league, I for one would be disappointed to have to start over from scratch. This league has been around for a long time, so several of us have spent years putting together these rosters. If we decide to do a reset, I think we should at least get to hold onto 10-20 players.
-
Congratulations, Dave! The news was very surprising, but your new role sounds fantastic and I look forward to following your journey with the Padres. Please just take it easy on the Giants, will you??
-
Selfishly , I want to keep my roster. I have some really fun assets on hand. However, I've been thinking about this, and I believe a reboot might do more for our fundraising efforts. We can announce the post-Cameron reboot and use our channels to get outsiders involved too.
-
Wow!!! That is exciting news Dave. Good luck with the Padres and continued good health. Keep screwing cancer on the west coast :)

For what it's worth, I would prefer not to go to H2H, would be fine with a league-wide reset, and am completely comfortable with new owners being able to cut whomever they want.
-
I vote on no reset or a less partial (i.e. we get 10 players). I spent time trying to make this roster better :)
-
I certainly don't object to Ben taking the reins; I was worried no one would. Thank you, Ben.
Additionally, I don't mind the idea of resetting the league, or as was suggested, keeping a pitcher & a field player. In my WAY OLD league, we kept a pitcher, field player, & 1 prospect (eligible for ROTY in new season). It would be easy to keep a similar player in Ottoneu simply based on off-season auto increase ($1 vs $2). If that's too complicated, then we can do total reset, simple r
-
It sounds like there are no objections to Ben as commissioner, so unless someone wants to suggest an alternative (either publicly or privately), I'll go ahead and shift the commissioner role to him tomorrow night and let you guys decide what you want to do with regards to new owners and assigning the teams
-
It's true; in the past, when we had multiple openings, the owner who made the largest contribution to a cancer-related charity got to pick from the available teams. And Brad is right that having a few start-from-scratch teams is a little weird, but given a pretty large disparity in rosters between a few of the open spots, I wasn't sure if you guys wanted to deal with some potential hard feelings if someone new gets a strong contender and someone else new has to build for a while.
-
What if we did a reset of sorts. All teams are allowed to keep one hitter and one pitcher. Everyone else gets cut. All teams would then draft and build new rosters. It would be fascinating to see who the keepers are and the strategies that ensued based on the differing prices of those keepers. Most of us started in this league as ottoneu newbies in 2012. Now we are seasoned veterans...could we do better? At least it would get everyone engaged again.
-
My two cents: the new teams should be allowed to cut whomever they want, whether it be none or all of their players. I suppose the challenge is how to decide which new owner gets which team. I thought it the past when we had multiple openings, we gave priority based on the voluntary donation.
-
Will happily go with whatever the majority wants, but just wanted to express support for Dave's idea of cutting all players from departing owners' rosters. If nothing else, it would make for a very exciting auction draft. Would have to take a closer look, but my initial feeling is that there'd be plenty of talent to go around.
-
Just threw out the H2H idea as a way to keep more owners invested throughout the season. Not married to the idea just thought it might help solve that problem. I think new owners should inherit the current rosters. I believe it would otherwise put the new owners at an even greater disadvantage bc we would all be bidding on their players.
-
I'm ambivalent about inheriting rosters. Consequently, I'm fine with whatever the remaining owners decide.
I do have strong feelings about one proposal however: I have exactly zero interest in changing league formats, i.e., a big no from me regarding H2H.
Finally, I think we're all still curious about this new endeavor Dave, sooooo...
-
I would vote to let them keep the existing rosters, but totally fine if group wants to go the other way.

The halfway measure doesn't usually work because those owners have to fight with other teams that possess significant surplus value. It's better to let them keep what's there or reboot the entire league.
-
Before we go approaching outsiders looking to join the league, there's probably one other consideration to make. Would the remaining owners prefer that the new owners inherit the rosters as constructed, or would the league be better off if the new owners inherited blank-slate rosters, with the existing players on those teams all cut and put back into next year's auction? I do think there's an argument for just having the new people start from scratch, but with a loaded talent pool to buy from.
-
In lieu of a buy-in, we've done voluntary donations to various cancer related charities, or people fighting cancer at the beginning of each season. There's no minimum, as the goal has never been to price people out of the league, but everyone has been extremely generous in supporting worthy causes. In terms of the league, it sounds like enough people want to keep it going, so perhaps we should install Ben as commissioner and come up with a plan to find several new owners.
-
I'd like the league to continue as well, but like many of the others, can't really commit to running it. Thanks to everyone for making this fun year after year.
-
So how does the league raise money? I missed that detail when I joined up. As for finding quality replacements, that shouldn't be a problem.
-
Well it looks like we are going to have our work cut out for ourselves replacing three owners. As far as any substantial rule changes I vote that we table the discussion until we secure new owners and see where everyone stands. I would suggest that maybe we look at the H2H format as something new. Just some thoughts. First point of business is naming a commissioner. I’m ok with Ben as he has been the only one to offer and he certainly has the ottoneu experience.
-
I'm happy to continue on, or disband the league, based on the will of the electorate. I'll be heartily disappointed to lose Dave and John and SeaTac from our little group, but I'm excited that it's for (mostly) positive reasons. May all the next things that come for you be happy ... and may they all continue to screw cancer.
-
I've really enjoyed this league for a number of years now, but it's become increasingly hard for me to keep up after the new baby came in 2017. Given the new rules going into place that increase the league's complexity, and the transition point in leadership, it's a good moment for me to give up SeaTac to a new owner. Thanks to Dave and all of you for making this so fun for me. I'll miss doing this, but I don't think I can give it the time it deserves in 2018.
-
It's always been a little sketchy that I've continued playing here while being employed by the Mariners, so perhaps this would be the right time for me to step away, too. That said, I refuse to be the (sole) reason the league disbands, so if everyone else wants to continue and no replacement for me can be found I'll keep going.
