To me, this is much ado about nothing. If you can trade the player for salary relief, then you can alternatively cut him and he'll be claimed off waivers or re-bid. On the other side, owners don't go around asking for players for nothing, so it doesn't expand the trade universe for those seeking players. Whether we keep or do away with these trades, it will have little or no effect to the league.
-
i was pretty surprised this was even an issue. it wasn't collusion, which i think should be the only basis for opposing a trade.
-
Just to be the devil's advocate on the trade thing: would it have been better if I picked up a $1 player, traded them to schimpf, and then schimpf cut them? We should only enforce rules that don't have obvious workarounds.
-
I'm bummed out that I didn't realize that cut players don't "go to auction". I had no idea Broxton was available. Nice pickup, DotG.
-
And for what it's worth, "trades for nothing" happen all the time in MLB.
-
I have no problem with whatever we decide, but I had not considered the possibility that there was any controversy to a deal like that. You do get something back: you get assurance that you don't eat a cut penalty. If we don't like "trades for nothing", we should change the cut penalty.
-
Final vote was 4-4, so I'm going to let it go through. We can take a vote during the offseason on a potential rule change.
-
And now pank! has cut Beltran in reliance of it going through. If people feel strongly abt prohibiting these sorts of deals, we should vote on it in the offseason, not change mid season.
-
I don't see how it's any different from either the bauers or smyly trades, each of which went through.
-
I don't like it...it helps the dumper but hurts the field. If you're not ready to pounce immediately you may miss an opportunity to grab a freebee. Also, only top teams are most likely to be so well stocked to want to dump higher salaried players, and in my mind, they do not need any more help. Legal, but shouldn't be.
-
This type of trade also happened on April 5th where Smyly was traded for nothing. Although there was a veto on that trade, too. I don't have a problem with it if we're voting.
-
Following on slack, these sorts of deals happen all the time in other leagues.
-
It's a pretty straight forward salary dump, but if a majority of ppl voting veto the deal, I'll back it out.
-
Instead of having to pay half the player's salary as a penalty, you can free up all te money for future auctions. That is something you get out of it. Also, it might be worthwhile 'giving' a player to a non-contender instead of throwing him out to the FA pool. That might have some benefit. Ottoneu allows this for a reason. I for one like to have this option available just in case.
-
I agree not sure we want to set this as a precedence for future trades giving away players and giving nothing in return .

Hate to be that guy, but after many years in the league I have never vetoed a trade until now. I dont think its appropriate to give players away for nothing in return. Not sure it matters to everyone else, but felt this was worth having an open conversation to make sure this is a precedence we want to set for the future in the league.

peel & eat schimpf's trade block has been updated!

*raises eyebrow* What's wrong with Heyward?
-
anyone want heyward?
-
Well that's disappointing...
-
If a player is on the 60DL he will not count towards your 40 player maximum (although his salary will count for the salary cap). However, not all teams move their long-term injured players to the 60DL. For example Alex Reyes (out with TJ surgery for the season) is on the 10DL. So, I guess that is happening to your guys. In that case, unfortunately, Ottoneu is not programmed to give you an exception.
-
I have over 40 players on my roster but several are on longterm DL. Isn't there a way that I can DL them without having to cut a player if I have more than 40 players? I've got like 4 DL guys and I'd really rather not have to cut a healthy player to make room... help?

Haha... That was a tragic day of baseball. Find out Eaton is out for the year and my team actually scored -5.7 points for the day!

though if trea turner and daniel murphy could just play the rest of their home games at coors, i might agree with you.
-
Haha, thanks but it's too early to read much into the standings. It's a looooong season.
-
That didn't take long... for last yr's champ to reclaim the top spot. Tough roster to compete against.
-
Yes it does. If a player plays in two games, it gets counted as two games, even if they are on the same day.
-
If a player plays both ends of a double header, does that count as 2 games toward the position games max?
-
I didn't quite get the catcher situation coming in, so Russell Martin is available if anyone is interested

looking for a high-end RP.

Grossman is part of the new Twins renaissance. Can't pass that up.
-
the biggest surprise for me so far is that someone apparently wants to roster robbie grossman.
-
Two weeks into the new season -- biggest surprises for you in MLB? Twinkies tied for first and Buxton has struck out in more than 50% of his at bats.
-
But what do I know, none of my guys are working out...
