Probably kicking a hornet's nest... but, should we discuss the idea of a "hard cap", whether that should be an informal goal or unwritten rule, and whether there should be restrictions or rules on loans and trades?
Hoping there can be a constructive conversation about how large a loan is beneficial and competitively balanced, is there any reason to have a concept of a "hard cap" and what that number may be (435? 450? 475?).
Looking for opinions on rules and game, not "w

Arbitration is going to start October 15 and end November 15. In the past we have required renewals to be done by 10 days after the World Series. Since this year the WS does not end until early November, halfway through Arb, we are going to move up the renewal date. Season ends Oct 3, and renewals are due by Oct 13 so if anyone is not interested in renewing we can get a new owner in to participate fully in arb and off-season trading. Thanks.

And I should be able to compete w/ that roster against other teams in this league on equal-ish ground, which is to say when I'm rolling with a total salary of $382 in a league with a $400 "cap" I can't be competitive with a team that's carrying $491 in salary. And I don't want to make similar trades so there's 3 teams in the league carrying $500-ish, 3 teams carrying $300-ish having given up in May/June, and 6 teams stuck in the middle. That's not competitive and balanced.
-
I'm not saying BI didn't build his roster well. He did. He was in the lead when he made the two big trades. I made my roster carefully too. I drafted Thor and Mookie and Odor for a buck. I got Bryant and Schwarber right out of the draft. My team, I punted a couple years at $100/year to be in the position I'm in now--effectively arbitration proof because piling all your money on one guy or spread over 3 guys doesn't hurt me all that much. I have only 8 players over $10. Only 3 over $28.

pretty sure BI 720 has put considerable effort into building the first place team. He's been in the league since the beginning....he's got a chance to win, so he's trading some future for the present (in deals judged fair by the process). Usually how this thing works.

not by taking on as much salary as possible just to load up top performing stars and not have to put any actual effort into building my team...
-
i agree that the value was solid in regards to west coast trying to build for the future, but this league should be about year in and year out competing and building... we do not do 40 man roster, major minor league with salary to just take huge loans to win one year, then have to cut your entire team for next year because you are so far over the cap... Being a team in contention this year, this trade really hurts the integrity of the top team in my opinion... I wanna win the money by winning
-
The value is fine. The rules should not be changed mid season. But we need to discuss in the offseason a policy for future seasons. 5 people didn't vote on that trade and it passed 4-3. Meaning it was 3-2 against by teams not involved in the trade. The money, esp this early in the season, is the problem for me. Build over several years and draft well? You are gonna finish second at best because of trades that put one team at a $500 cap. That's not how I want to compete.
-
I'm split on the veto of the current trade. Would definitely like to see a cap on loans, but assume that should be implemented next year. Do think that receiving massive loans isn't the best way to "compete" in a league. However, do think that West Coast is receiving pretty good value in the trade and would not like to penalize him for trying to find an angle on moving a player that he feels compelled to move.

Long Con I suggest you email Niv, and anyone who feels the same should do same because it's not acceptable to go 25% over budget and have that much starpower on one team.
-
Right. If you want to trade prospects to add a $59 Cutch, fine. You should have to drop your $24 Zobrist or something to make cap space, not just take on a loan. The way this is going, the team that gets the first 1 or 2 trades like this where massive money and talent change hands gets to win the league, and making such a trade becomes more important that drafting well or building long term.
-
I vetoed and I agree completely... There needs to be salary cap limits put into place for loans for next year... I feel this is completely unfair and no one should be able to add that much salary just bc other teams are giving up and or trying to build... The prospect haul for Cutch is legitimate, but there needs to be a limit on loans or this is going to happen year in and year out bc of poorly drafted teams not playing for the current season
-
As a friendly reminder the trade y'all are being asked to veto/approve would put the front-runner at a salary cap of $493 and mean he has 8 players that combine for $348, a thing that would be impossible in the auction because of cap and that should be vetoed because fucking seriously.

I think they accumulate, you just can't change your lineup until it is addressed from memory

Just out of curiosity, if you are over roster limits none of your stats count right? For example, Taco Night is 5 men over roster limit

The Miggy trade is back up, please everyone vote on the trade... If you actually look at the deal and production from the players invoved, its not a bad deal value wise, it just looks bad because of the money
-
I'm fine with voting, but I think if voting is the case, then we have to have everyone involved voting yes or no on every trade... This league should be active enough to get all the votes
-
My opinion is that, if the trades get put back through, we should vote on them. If we need to make sure that everyone weighs in, that's fine, but let's work through the process.

As you stated Chief, you chose to bid Miggy up... How much more productive could you have been if you would have spread your money out better during the draft... There was enough value out there to build a competitive team if researched correctly... The Miggy trade was probably not bad because of the youth and long term value, but the 100 loan and two superstars for not a lot of return was not right...
