And since we have a lot of new owners, I should probably give a little background. The draft will take between 3 and 4 hours, so we like to start around 7 pm eastern and finish up before midnight.

We're a couple weeks away from the arbitration deadline, so it's time to start thinking about draft dates. Urbina being in Australia complicates things a little bit, but let's see if we can make one of the weekend nights in March work. It's tough to get everyone together, so please try and be as open to all the dates, even if it's not your first choice. Please open the link at put in your availability. Thanks!

You could either punt saves and go for W and QS or go for saves and basically be gaurantees at least one category per week against most other teams. We also played categories last year, which was... interesting...
-
Ah, sweet, thanks y'all. My leagues in the past have been SP/RP agnostic and have just had general P slots. That resulted in some crazy stuff and a lot of people punting SVs (I even forgot to include them in my stat list). It'll be interesting to see how this goes. Maybe we'll update our redraft rules as a result.
-
The IP limit is a non-issue. The minimum threshold is easy to achieve, and the max is easy to stay under if you pay attention. The system will tell you what your projected innings for the year will be based on your YTD usage. LC's comment about RP and SP is valid. If Giolito is starting a game, then he must be in the SP slot. If he starts and is in the RP slot, his stats will not be counted for that game.
-
SP only accrue innings from an SP roster spot, and RPs only from an RP roster spot, RP/SPs must start to accrue innings from a SP roster spot or appear in relief to accrue innings from an RP roster spot.

So, in everyone's experience, what's the IP limit like? I'm trying to update my trade block, and I have a lot of SPs listed as RPs (Giolito, Cotton, etc). While that's great in my redrafts with huge IP caps (we did W, QS, K, ERA, and WHIP), it feels like it can be a little dicier here. How often do y'all bench a pitcher who could have a good game because they would add 5+ innings to your total? Or does it vary week-to-week depending on how close the totals are?

4x4 setup creates scarcity at MI and OF...
-
Trey Baughn has done a lot of good stuff on OttoNeu if you have time to read a few thousand words: http://www.fangraphs.com/fantasy/getting-started-with-ottoneu/ The caveat with a lot of his stuff is that he plays FGPts, so it's not always applicable to 4x4.
-
I think that was because Santana was the hot sleeper last year and 3B was really deep. Most everyone already had a starting 3B so demand was really low. I remember Santana pretty clearly because I was in on him, but I would have to check my draft notes from last year about the 3B market to be sure about Longo.
-
But, in general, a superstar will cost $50+, a big name star will cost anywhere between $30-50, quality starting players will cost $10-30, and the error bars can vary significantly. Budget about $3-5 if you want to pick up top 50 prospects or decent relievers. But know your roster and the player pool well, because the draft moves very fast. The software is not very user friendly, and the timing is unforgiving. If you're not prepared, you will miss player(s).
-
Take a look at the standings tab to see what type of counting/rate stats you need to aim for to be in contention. That should give you an idea of how much production you need to add to your team at draft to be competitive. If you haven't done an auction before, Urbina's scarcity comment is valid, but cuts both ways. We've seen players go for much more than expected (Domingo Santana was a $14 player last draft) or much less (Longoria went for $10). My valuation was off by about 100% for both.
-
Not a direct answer, but I hope that all helped.
-
Final thing is that when you do budget, you should always expect position scarcity to lead to inflation at auction. If there are 6 teams in need of a top OF and only 4 available, their prices will skyrocket. So remember when you are estimating price per roster spot that you shouldn't estimate based on similar players on other teams, because those guys have all been deemed enough of a good deal to be kept.
-
It's also worth noting that you should consider cap room after the draft as well. For rebuilding teams especially, it's important to have extra money left over so they can be aggressive in free agency. Every year there are a few undrafted guy who are super stud keepers by the next season. So either you need to nail every breakout and sleeper or you need to take a quantity approach.
-
It depends from team to team, not I've found around $8-10 per roster spot you aim to fill. The roster organizer is a good tool to use. You can set a lineup and in each blank space input a dollar amount you would like to budget for that position.
-
...and as for annual increases, rostered players with no MLB service for the year get a $1 salary increase at season's end...players with service get $2
-
read Rules Section VI on "Trades"...some trades are unbalanced from a strict salary standpoint and may include cash loans
-
Thanks that makes sense. Too bad MLB doesn't have a hard cap.

This is my first season too, so take this with a grain of salt, but I think going over the cap by $50-$80 is caused by the fact that almost every player gets at least a $2 (correct?) salary increase after the season, coupled with money added through arbitration.
-
Procedure /strategy question - how much cap space should I have for the draft? How do some teams get so high over the cap?

Thames also had a weirdly pretty good AA season at one point, and that's gotta count for something. Maybe he's just got Buxton Syndrome.
-
FiveThirtyEight told me Cleveland was gonna win the World Series, then I stood in Progressive Field and watched them lose Game 7. My faith in projections still hasn't recovered. That being said, I'll bid on him in this league and do everything in my power do draft/trade for him in my redraft ESPN league.

what's your take on Korean Thunder?

Every time the hype train slow down and I return to thinking Eric Thames will probably be overpaid for, FanGraphs runs another article on him.
