Draft #2 is tomorrow!! As a reminder - we're looking to start at 11 AM EST and draft between 3 -4 hours to draft 200+ players. We'll have a short break every 90 minutes again and will figure out a plan for the rest of tomorrows draft after the 3hr break. If you haven't already, please load up those watch lists to keep the nominations going smoothly. Let me know if you have any questions!

You can start 2 catchers at any day so the organizer is correct. There’s a 162 game limit for catchers so if you play two every day you’ll hit the limit like halfway through the season and no further stats will count.
-
I just wanted to verify that starting lineups is one catcher, not two. On the roster organizer page there are two slots for the catcher position. Thanks.

Yeah it's something I'll watch closely on draft #3, definitely won't let people stay locked out if they time out or were 1 second late, if it turns into a shit show then I'll remove the 'require nominations' setting. Also both future draft times are now included in the league description since it just shows as 'paused' on the header.
-
Also, as you guys saw they clock sneaks up on you. On draft day number 3, when you must nominate, are we really going to lock out people for good if you don't nominate? Maybe this is already expected, but if not, I suggest the commish pauses the draft and makes the person who is up nominate if the clock runs out on them. This way you don't get permanently locked out.

Yeah, I'm good for the 10th. Pretty sure we can't trade during the auction, and I agree that doing so kind of wrecks the drafting strategy. First-time Ottoneu/first-time auction player, so I don't really know things. Looking forward to watching you guys during the second draft with Perfectos! Should be an enjoyable sit-fest with most of our monies gone lol

The draft will go faster toward the end when there is not much money to spend.

On the third night I haven't decided if we'll have a hard end time or finish when people are done nominating, most likely the latter since I imagine it'll go really quick on the small auctions, but yeah 35/team was just an estimate of where people will want to wrap up before the season starts.. appreciate all the feedback though everyone. p.s. glad Honeywell wasn't nominated in rd. 1, that woulda really sucked
-
Re: start times- I think there's more concern for the 3/28 draft that's at 9:30 again, but with some west coasters I don't think we can go much earlier. Sounds like a good plan to go for 3 at least on 3/10 and evaluate where we'd be sitting for the third draft, with a 4th hour being likely. And yeah interesting thought on the mid-draft trades but i'm not a huge fan either (assuming anyone would have a trade already) but you guys are free to negotiate now for deals you can accept after draft #3!

I am all for going longer in our drafts. Trades are not allowed during the draft. As far as the values at the end of the draft, that's part of drafting strategy. There was way too much over spending the first day. Our goal should be to fill our 40 man roster with the draft.
You will not be able to spend all of your money and not fill your roster. Ottoneu will not allow it. You will always have $1 available for an open spot. So, if you only roster 22 players you will only be allowed to

Actually, is that even possible?
-
I know it may be unconventional, but what about opening up trades between auction rounds? Maybe just after the second round? The idea would be to allow teams that had overspent a chance to try to trade assets to get money to continue to participate in the draft. The downside is it might allow for fewer values later in the rounds as more people have money, as opposed to the end of the third draft day just being the few people who have money left grabbing any value left for cheap.
-
Okay with 4 hour draft on the 10th. That is a 8 start time for me (PST). I am okay with a earlier start if we want. Just to confirm our next draft isn't until the 10th of March?
-
I'm good with that. We can always see where we are at after 3 hours... Anyone want to loan me some auction money?
-
I feel like earlier start times would enable longer draft periods, not sure about 4 hours long though. Maybe we could aim for two 3-hour drafts?
-
Since I'm having draft withdrawals on a Friday afternoon, I wanted to share some thoughts for our upcoming two rounds. We got through 90 picks in ~2 hours of drafting. My goal is to have 35 players per team on average so we've still gotta get about 330 dudes on rosters. Seemed like we were pretty toast by the end of the first draft (deservedly so) so I don't want to push the night drafts much past 2.5 hrs. Leaves us a long draft on 3/10, are we good to go 4 hours to try and get 200+ drafts?
-
Thanks again for a great first round everyone! Round 2 is scheduled for 11 AM est on Saturday, March 10th. Should give you all enough time to regroup and compose yourselves from the last second snipe or the player you took home tonight and are afraid to see still on your roster tomorrow morning.
-
Draft starts tomorrow night! Friendly reminders/housekeeping beforehand: -We'll go for about 2 - 2.5 hrs with a 2 min. break around 11pm EST. I don't plan to start any later than 9:35 so please try to join the draft 10 min early to get cozy. -Have your auction watchlist ready (which you can do now) with nominations & consider nominating high $ guys at a start price higher than $1 to keep the draft moving along. -You will not be locked out for missing nominations this draft. See you tomor

Two weeks til we draft! So Ottoneu now allows leagues to choose between 24 hr and 48 hr (default) trade review periods during this offseason. Is anyone opposed to switching to 24 hr? Hoping I can change this without a formal vote so if anyone wants to keep a 48 hr review period please speak up by the end of this week, thanks! https://twitter.com/ottoneu/status/961278111223631877

Pretty meh response on the Arb coupons (6 yes total) so we’ll hold off on them this season and revisit next offseason. The “require nominations “ thing is a go though for draft #3. Not long until our first draft!
-
I have been in a few of these drafts in the past. Everyone had to nominate, but no one was permanently kicked out of the draft. If you didn't nominate, you would be locked out. The commish would let you back in and it would still be your turn. We never skipped anyone. You were made to nominate.

Right, I think it would be easier to rank it off of final standings place because it's a clearer picture and still accomplishes the same goal. Hopefully I haven't come off too biased on one side so far but my personal thoughts are that this will combat a 'race to the bottom' by rewarding finishing higher in standings while not over penalizing tanking (since last place teams generally don't get as much arb sent to them). Hopefully options are clear in the survey but thanks for all the Q's!
-
In the article explaining coupons, they use it in a points league to motivate people to keep earning points throughout the season, regardless of their place in the standings. In 5x5, we don't have points to reward people in the same way, yeah? We just have standings. So we reward again based off standings. That means the worst team gets hosed in the off season (fewest coupons), or the worst team gets the most coupons and we create a race to the bottom. Am I missing something?

yeah that's a fair argument, nobody goes into the season trying to finish 2&3. given there's some general confusion on the topic I'll send out a survey tonight with like 3 possible coupon breakdowns and if there's something that has a lot of support we'll go with that, I'll include an option to veto it altogether in case that's the best option for some. also here's some info on the nomination enforcing which I'll include a re-vote on too http://about90feet.com/2016/03/26/enforcing-nomina

I see your point on the money but why should 2nd and 3rd be hurt for the next year? 4th - 7th gets a leg up on 1-3 for the next year. If I’m 3rd I’m bent out of shape because first I didn’t win and 2nd I’m at a disadvantage for the next year. Can u tell that I am really not in favor of the coupons? If we have to do them, I really hope the amounts are small.
-
Check out the link below. I hadn't sent this earlier (because i just found it) but this is a really solid explanation for the value of arbitration coupons, we won't use those extreme of values and it will likely reward 4th-11th place finishers, maybe 2nd and 3rd too but they get cash which is still king haha

In other survey news, we didn't have majority for requiring nominations, but "yes" and "not sure" combined was majority so I think we'll implement the nominations for the last draft date but not the others. Majority (7) preferred arb. coupons as well, so we'll start conservatively in our first year with those and reassess next offseason. I'll update something in the rules google doc on coupons and we can tinker from there. Also trophy support was <75% so I think we'll

Less than a month from our first draft date!! We'll be holding 3 draft periods:
-2/21 @ 9:30 pm EST (2.5 hours)-
-3/10 @ 11 am EST (3 hours)-
-3/28 @ 9:30 pm EST (2.5 hours+)-
The 3/28 draft will go until no more nominations are made, since the season starts 3/29. Please plan on being at all 3, but if you can't, I don't think it would be the end of the world if you can make 2/3 because you can still add free agents after the final draft and it's a long season after all. PM w/ concerns though!
-
In previous auctions which I have participated in that last nearly 4 - 4 1/2 hours and are composed of 15 teams. We manage to get 23 players per team in that time frame. So I don't see this as an issue.
-
Rounds = Everyone nominating a player? I'm hoping we can get like 100-150 player auctions done so the optimistic guess is 12 :)
-
How many rounds do you think we can get done the 1st night? I am hoping 3-4.

First draft round confirmed for Wednesday, 2/21 beginning @ 9:30 PM EST! We'll go for about 2.5 hours so please plan for that, we'll need at least one (probably two) more weeknight drafts to fill rosters which will be in mid-March, so stay tuned!

Thanks to everyone (except one) who completed the survey, I know baseball might not be top priority at this time of the year for some of you, but hey you all joined in December so I hope we're all excited for spring training to start. I'll say it should be Trout, but will probably end up being someone else. Like a Stanton or Correa.

Nice, thanks! Those two with two more that want in but haven't signed up yet should bring us to a full league, so just wanted to tell everyone else to hold off on inviting others until I find out about the two I'm potentially bringing in.
