No, that's not what's being stated. Of course, the worst team in the league would want non-snake draft. And an extra $100 auction money. And the right to poach players from other teams. What's being stated is that a non-snake draft is too much "compensation" because there is enough built into a snake draft with 5 rounds.
-
So the worst team in the league should want snake 1, 24, 25, 48, 49 over non-snake 1, 13, 25, 37, 49 is that what's trying to be sold here? Because if so, I fail to see the logic in that. Why would anyone want to wait the extra picks?
-
To Berkley's point about adding a round, yes, I agree. But we are talking about 5 rounds.
Also, let's be clear that I was the one who suggested reverse order of finish. The value gained by premium prospects and the slight value gained over 5 rounds, to me, is plenty. To use this year's prospects from Keith Law as proof: would you rather have Benintendi (1) and Margot (24) or Jimenez (12) and Giolito (13)?
-
I kind of see it both ways. I look at it in terms of where am i getting the best chance for a successful prospect. Part of me thinks most years you will get that with players 1 and 13. Is it possible to get a dahl or something at 24 or 25, absolutely. But I can see it both ways. In the end, they are just prospects and they are huge risks anyway. So whatever is decided im fine with. Just looking forward to the added fun it will be.

As far as bottom teams getting the higher success rate prospects. Giving lower teams a better chance is the whole goal behind the reverse order drafts.

If you are using the 1,24,25, 48,49 vs 12,13, 36,37,60 as a defense for the higher guy getting less value. That is kind of a flawed view. The only reason it works out that way is because it's only 5 rounds. So number 49 vs 60 skew the overal total. Add a round or subtract a round and it works back to even overall value. Just my 2 cents on it. I'm up for either.

Right, but it's actually 1/24/25. And again, higher prospects are exponentially more valuable. So bottom teams are getting the players with much higher success rates.
-
To me, snake makes sense only in re-draft scenarios. As a dynasty league don't we want to give the slight edge to those at the bottom of the standings, a la real life sports drafts?
-
Being new this offseason I prefer random and snake as I wasn't around last year to do any prospecting myself. That being said, I completely understand reverse standings.
-
The argument against a snake is that there could be better value at having 12/13 pick than 1/24 when you're discussing prospects at this level. Which is probably a decent argument
-
In a five-round snake draft, the team with the last pick in the first round receives the lowest total value in picks: 12,13,36,37,60 -- compared to first pick: 1,24,25,48,49. That should be plenty reward/penalty for the standings. Besides the fact that higher picks have exponentially more value.
-
Alright so it appears most are in favor of using last year's finish as the order. So we will use the inverse of the final tally, where Tatamagouche will have the first pick. Still working on draft type. I think snake makes a whole lot of sense but again, open to discussing that and getting votes on it.
-
Trying to be as unbiased as possible I would say non-snake, reverse order of last year's finish is the most fair/realistic to real baseball.
-
I really have no preference whether we start in reverse order this year or next. But i am not in favor of a snake draft. I like the idea of the 12th place team getting first pick each round.

I would be in favor of going in reverse order of standings... But I stand to benefit quite a bit from it.

I think starting next year it would work best for that, but as this was a new thing I thought it made sense to randomly get an order (like previously discussed) for the first year. But I guess we can open that for discussion?
-
It would obviously be a benefit to me but I had though the 5 MiLB would be a Snake draft with order determined by reverse order of standings.

Here is the link to the general rules regarding the MiLB draft. http://www.fangraphs.com/fantasy/ottoneu-101-the-5milb-structure/ couple of differences with ours as we're drafting following our draft to ensure everyone has a fair shot through the auction to get who they want. This explains the eligibility rules and how the rosters work.
-
For the MiLB 5 draft, I think we should do a modified snake draft where the first two rounds are snake then the 3rd round order is a repeat of the 2nd. Then it just goes snake from there. This will help mitigate the fact that the first pick is more valuable than the 12/13 picks for minor leaguers. Also if we just go with straight snake the first pick gets 5 of the top 49 picks, which would also be an advantage.
Or we could just do straight snake draft based on reverse order of finish last year
-
And I just realized it was Saturday and not Sunday...so the draft drawing will actually take place tomorrow evening, Sunday March 12th at 10pm CDT. Again, it will be live streamed to ensure I'm not rigging anything along with real time results on the Google spreadsheet. Thanks everyone!
-
Plan is for that to take place on Tuesday night around 10pm CDT. All results will be posted there, along with updates on the spreadsheet, with the final results posted here. If you have any questions please let me know and I'll be happy to help or answer! The draft will be a quick process, and will need to be done as soon as possible following the Ottoneu draft as any rookie-eligible players can't be bid on until that is completed.
-
The draft worksheet can be found here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1aptS6RYqn4GuxaioQ8b8d-KDlZS6HCoLXWU4QJZRJHw/edit?usp=sharing which will show the draft order along with results and the actual MiLB rosters. Keep this link handy as it will be updated if any trades or promotions are completed. If you want to view the random generator process it'll be conducted on Slack in our room. If you don't have access to Slack, let me know and I can point you in the direction
-
The MiLB draft will take place following the conclusion of our main Ottoneu draft. This is to ensure that everyone has an opportunity to bid on a player before we conduct the draft. This week I will be doing the randomly generated draft numbers to assign draft order. I think it makes sense to utilize a snake draft for this instance - if anyone has objections to that let me know ASAP. I will be streaming the process so everyone can make sure I'm not rigging the system or trying to improve my spot
-
Happy Draft Week! Hope everyone has had a good break from Ottoneu and ready to get back into baseball season! Now that it has arrived, we have some housekeeping to take care of. First, reminder for everyone that our draft will be next Sunday, March 18th at 9pm EDT. It is of extreme importance that you be at the draft, we don't want teams only half or 1/3 filled like last year after the draft. Secondly, this will be the inaugural MiLB draft! I will put more details about that in the next post...
-
Swanson's Swan Song's trade block has been updated!

Our draft date has officially been set! Saturday, March 18 at 9pm EST. Good middle ground in midst of Spring Training but enough ahead of start of season to make moves if needed. Next we'll figure out the MiLB draft!
-
So looking at the results, there's one day that's the pretty clear favorite where everyone that has voted so far is available so the draft will be Saturday, March 18th. I'm going to send out a new poll so we can confirm the time on that day. With 9 votes in and that being the only day all 9 have said, I'd say that gives a very solid majority to move on. Please go here to select the times that you would be okay drafting on the 18th: http://doodle.com/poll/vzeb24nffbs28hea Thank you!
-
I'm a 'the later the better' kind of guy when it comes to drafting. You have a better idea of how position/rotation battles play out and doesn't penalize you for possible injuries in spring training like an earlier date might.
-
If you haven't yet voted in the draft poll please do so ASAP. Right now there's one that is pretty well all available so need the other 4 to vote so we can decide. Is anyone else interested in a earlier March/Feb date or is that too early to do it? Known Berkeley mentioned so wanted to check.
-
I will be using a random number generator over 7 tries to come up with the average position of each team which will determine the draft order. That will be posted live to slack for anyone on there who wants to see it unfold (quite the fun action I know) and will let you know when that's going to happen for anyone that wants to make sure it's above board and I'm not cheating the system. Basically each team gets a number and then the average after 7 tries will be the draft position.
-
Once we have those narrowed down, we'll have a second poll to using times everyone said they were available to finalize the date and time. Secondly, we also will have a the inaugural MiLB draft this season, which will take place immediately following the auction draft. Technically waiver claims could be made after the draft, but no players who have been previously on a MLB active roster would be eligible to be claimed until the MiLB draft took place so we need it to be quick after the auction.
-
Part of me wants to draft now. So we can start trading again and get through the boredom. But then my brain reminds me the WBC is this year and I should wait to see what/if injuries happen.

Hi! Now that we're into the dead period, we can work on some housekeeping measures. Technically, we can draft any time between now and April 2nd, however I feel like it'd be better to get into March. Now if everyone is wanting to go ahead and do it, we can go that route. I have setup a poll here: http://doodle.com/poll/yii9drmy452y44iv for everyone to log availability on the specified dates. Make sure to click "Show all 18 options" to see all available dates. Select every time slot tha

Goldschmidt can be had for a relatively cheap SP and/or 3B. Need to have a deal in place by deadline because there's a chance I may cut him
-
REMINDER: Keeper deadline is tonight at 11:59pm Eastern. ALL cuts must be made by that time to put you with a legal roster and salary cap. Remember when the auction occurs you will still only have that $400 to draft with so leave space if desired and roster spots. Thanks everyone!
