But still max out re: catchers at 162 games?

Pitchers might have the RP/SP designation, but you've got to have them in your lineup in the right place. If you've got him in your lineup as a reliever and he pitches in relief you get the points. If you've got him in your reliever slot and he starts for some reason you won't get his points. There are two catcher slots because catchers play fewer games and it isn't always easy to know ahead of time if your guy will be playing. So you can have both guys in there if you want.

But if pitcher is RP/SP, points for everything? And: why two catcher slots? Thought it was one?

for the lineup, you just slick on the guy's position (the blue box to the far left of the guy's line) then click on the position you want the guy to play. No it's not all that intuitive.

Hey Yaz-- you only get points with your pitcher if he is in the slot he's been used in. So if you've got Arrieta in his accustomed slot in your SP rotation, and he happens to come in in the 15th inning of a crazy ballgame, you get nothing. In my opinion this is one of the stupidest Ottoneu rules on the books. Completely stupid! And lacking in fun.

Another question, something to confirm: according to league rules if I use a SP as a RP (or vice-versa) no points, that right?

I, too, can't wait for season to start but can't figure out how to get guys into my lineup?! It's possible that I am just an idiot when it comes to such things but, also, the site presents to me as, shall I say, a bit non-intuitive.

I plugged my prospective lineup in right after the draft, but that's only because i'm still 9 years old and can't wait for the baseball season! i think a good view is to look at team pages (the page that shows salaries) and sort by position. You can get a good idea of team depth that way.
-
Where should we be checking out each other's teams? In the lineup tab? If so, could everyone edit their lineups and put their players in the correct places? It's hard to see where people might need help without placing the players in their respective positions.

Hi. Just thought I'd drop in a note here about tie bids. If there is a tie for highest bid in the pre-season (ie, now), the winner is determined at random (an electronic coin-flip of some sort.)
During the season, the player lower in the standings will get the player.
Talking about non-ties: just to be clear, if you win a slow bid, the salary will be the next highest bid +1. So if you bid $14 and the second-place bid was $10, you'll be paying $11 for that player. FYI.
-
Sorry, Yaz. Who is retired that you got? The dollar charge won't go away till after the season. Last year in my first Ottoneu league I put up for slow-draft auction a guy I really didn't want -- can't remember why, but there was some logic to it, but a little too late I saw that I would be on the hook for those players if nobody bid on them. Which nobody did. Not too painful ultimately.

Looks like I drafted a guy who's not in the MLB (retired?)...oops...only a buck, no big deal, but if I drop him, no $ relief, is that right?

On the list of players, you would hit "Free Agent" by the guy's name, that'll take you to his Fangraphs profile where you hit 'Start Auction'.

Brian, when you're on the Ottoneu player page for a guy, click "Start Auction".

I can't figure out how to put up a player for auction in this "slow draft"
-
All right, everyone. Crazy times, but fun. Sorry our Australian friends didn't make it in for awhile, but it seemed to turn out ok. I've already put somebody up for bid. cheers, reg.

Then after the draft is over, free agency (with 48 hour blind auctions) and trading should open up.
-
Yeah, I think it's standard practice for folks to drop out if they feel like they're done with the draft while others can keep going. I think it would be good to at least give everyone who's there the opportunity to fill up their starting rosters plus a decent amount of bench players.
-
3 hours. We can go longer if everyone agrees. If someone needs to leave and OKs it, remaining players can continue bidding. Has to be unanimous either way.

Haven't yet, but I talked to the commissioner of the other league and he said it's no big deal, they'll make do. So yes, I'll try to focus my efforts on maximizing value out of my remaining loot here.
-
Did you get any takers on your other Ottoneu team? We want to make sure you're concentrating on beating us.

Ah yes. I'll probably do that later today if no one here is interested.
-
if nobody in this league wants your team, you can also post it a message to the ottoneu board and see if somebody is interested. (instead of just abandoning and hurting that league).
-
Hey folks. So I was wondering if someone is looking for another Ottoneu league. I was in a SABR one last year decided I just don't have the capacity to keep up with it. The draft is set for Tuesday March 22 at 9:30pm Est/6:30 Pacific. The team came in 3rd last year and has some pretty decent pieces (especially pitching). You can check it out: http://ottoneu.fangraphs.com/48/team?team=165. I hate leaving them in the lurch, so thought I'd see if anyone wants to take it over. Any interest?
-
Yeah, so I believe every rostered player's salary increases $2 at the end of the season. That's before allocations.
-
Ottoneu veterans... if you care to chime in on the salary thing that might help. Are there any other automatic increases to salary in the offseason? I'm sorry I haven't really lived through an Ottoneu offseason.... and right now I've got to get a couple things done before the draft . . ..
-
let's try to chat before the draft... we all should be able to get in half an hour beforehand...
-
I believe salaries increase only through the allocation system... at the end of the year, we each get to increase salaries on other teams by a couple of dollars. hard to explain now and ... well don't worry about it too too much. basically you'll have $25 to allocate to the other teams, with strict limits, $3 per team i think? so if someone has a guy at a terrific price, you can add dollars to his salary... ultimately a guy's salary would only go up at the most $5-10....
-
How does keeping a player next year work? Does the salary increase? by how much?
Thanks!

Update: a new man has stepped in to pick up Vafa's old team. He's a guy at Monmouth University in NJ. We'll be meeting him tomorrow evening. Draft doors open at 5:30pm I believe.
-
Bummer, dudes. Vafa / Vottoman Empire: "Is this true, really, the draft tomorrow night?" There is no way I can make that." This does not surprise me. Not that Vafa would miss the boat, but that somebody would. This is why I pester people. Anyways, I posted a notice on Fangraphs and will be trolling potential owners. If you want to nominate somebody feel free.
-
You have it right, sir-- 9pm eastern tomorrow evening. Basically 26 hours from now.
-
Hey, so I have the first draft on my calendar for 9pm ET tomorrow night, but can't find confirmation of that anywhere in my email. Can someone please confirm the draft dates/times? Thank you and sorry!
-
Note that there is also a Util slot in your daily lineup. Also that though you have 2 catcher slots, you still only get 162 catcher games-- that second catcher is just to help you deal with all those games where your catcher, unbeknownst to you, is sitting.
The Papi and I were talking about all this today. I couldn't remember if there were 1 or 2 Util slots, but he says it's just 1. We were discussing how difficult it can be to get 5 legit outfielders in your lineup.
-
You'll also have another page that is more like your payroll. It'll show your dudes and all the salaries they're paid, the guys you dropped but are still paying, and that stuff.
OK, I'm not sure that clarifies it for you, but if you have further questions, just put them out there. The site will take some getting used to I'm sure.
-
Maestro: Yes, it is a little confusing and hard to fathom right now since you don't see what your lineup looks like. Ultimately your team page will show your basic roster. It'll show your lineup, your bench guys, and then you can even put your minor leaguers in their own spot. Underneath, your pitchers, the 5 starters, 5 relievers, and bench guys. Of course it'll show your live points while the games are happening.
-
Hey all, so I understand that there are 2 catchers, 5 outfielders, and a MI. Any other roster limitations/requirements? I understand that I don't have to fill all 40 spots, but I do need to be able to roster a team (plus have $1 for each spot I'm under $40), but I don't know what the required "basic" roster is and can't find it anywhere on this site. Thanks for the help!

Friends, the lame SF Fino had to drop out, so sorry for them to miss out on this incredible once-or-twice-in-a-lifetime groundfloor opportunity to distract himself from mundane existence.
However, now we have Steve Sax Disease, a man who, based on several emails, clearly knows his shit.
Welcome Steve.
Buena suerte, all
