Given that we're still alive in OPL into the playoffs, it's more of a going for OPL strategy as the payoff is higher. Definitely need a lot of luck in the playoff round though
-
Once the season ends all teams revert back to 400, so bottlejobs will have to make a ton of cuts. It is very much a "going for it this year" strategy.
-
And they’ll have to cut to get below $476

Bottlejobs are now 3 over their effective cap. They have dealt a looooot of good players to get their cap so high. Their team is in a strong position, with a high cap, precisely because they dealt good players to other teams.
-
Because they are not over the cap they have $76 in loans from other teams. Incoming and outgoing loans adjust your salary base.

Hi. I thought no rounders explained it quite well. As do the rules on the site. But basically you can acquire cap space in trades. This allows contending teams to deal prospects for rentals. In my last trade I dealt Williams for boyd because I needed pitching. I was also up against the cap and thought the trade was slightly uneven, so I asked for some cap relief to get thrown in - elevating my teams cap and giving me some more freedom for the stretch run.
-
how can a team add a salary of $3 when they are $76 over cap

One last note you can always go her for a refresher on the rules around adding and dropping players (even after 10 years I refer to the rules from time to time) - https://ottoneu.fangraphs.com/rules#adding-and-dropping-players

Just always make sure you have a $1 free for any Roster spots below 40 (that always trips up new and experienced players) Does this explanation make sense? Feel free to reach out with any other questions to message board or me directly.

The when, why and how to utilize this is all up to you. FYI, Hoyt you have 3 available roster spots and only two players with cap penalties. You could try and re-add them to your roster now if you wanted to. You also have loaned out $9 of cap space and received $5 of cap space

The unfortunate flip side is I cut David Bednar early in the season because I needed everyday players to compete in the OPL and Waiver Wire Warriors picked him up and they have a great asset after he went down and got himself sorted out

This cap management isn’t a loophole it’s part of the overall strategy (which Niv designed to simulate real MLB salary strategy) players on the 60 day IL don’t count towards your 40 man roster so you can take flyers on injured players and wait for them to return or stash them for next season. For instance I think I cut Clase in midseason to reclaim some cap space when he was a minor leaguer and injured. I picked him back up a month late and stashed him for the following year.

For those of us competing in the OPL, we need to cut injured players ASAP and replace them around the roster freeze deadlines with (maybe mid) every day players to take advantage of the best ball rules

When to cut and how to manage you cap money becomes an important strategy during the season. If you have serious injury of big earners you want to cut them ASAP to be able to cycle through their cap penalty. Sometimes it’s helpful to drop folks and then re-add them if they are on the 60 day IL which gives you more roster space to accumulate prospects, etc.

30 days after cutting a player you can re-auction them again and either cut them to reclaim 1/2 of their adjusted salary or just keep them at there lower salary (provided no one else bids against you). You do this every 30 days until the salary goes to $1 and then you can’t reclaim any more of their salary.

We you cut a player you receive 1/2 of their salary to spend (or add to your cap) and then the other half counts as a cap penalty unless that player is picked up by another team and then you receive 100% of their salary back

This practice is similar to real life MLB teams paying for portions of player contracts in trades, unlike in real life Ottoneu has no Bobby Bonilla day and all of the rosters reset to $400 in the offseason.

The differences you see in cap amounts are related to loans. As part of the trade process owners can exchange cap money as part of the deals. Typically you’ll see this when team at the top of standings deal low-cost prospects for higher cost veteran players. Also sometimes you’ll see a few dollars exchanged to help make the deal equal out depending on each teams cap needs

I don't understand this format and this league. We have a 400 dollar cap and yet many of the top teams have a higher number than 400. Additionally we are hit with a cap penalty every time we cut a player and yet team continue to cut and add players like there is no tomorrow. I don't know what the loophole is that is being exercised. Irritating and confusing.

That auction being the next year's draft?

After November 15th, that's the salary of the player for 2026 unless he is cut on January 31st and goes to auction.
-
On October 15th or something like that, every player that has played in majors in the last year gets an extra $2 added to their salaries. Every minor leaguer with no MLB service (and in some strange cases like McCullers and Cavalli who haven't been in the majors for multiple seasons) get a $1 at the same time. Then around November 15th, there's arbitration where your players will have added salary added to them by other teams.
-
So quick question, I see on some player pages that there will be a salary increase at some point in the season. When/why does that happen?

8 is typically when i get out of work if i work on draft day. So I'm on board with that
-
agreed that 8 pm is a real sweet spot for me . 7 is fine but 8 is ideal
-
Is there any chance we could push back the start time until 8 pm for weekday draft days? We can make 7 pm work if need be, but it does kind of make it a tad dicey with work. Weekends would not be a problem with 7. No worries, if not, but wanted to throw out there.
-
Sorry, I have been our town traveling for work the past three weeks. The offer still stand for co-commissioners.

But if it's easier for the Commish to cut it would be Mullins, Suwinski, Outman, Alzolay, Mckenzie, Rizzo, Turner, Jung Ho Lee, LeClerc, Darvish, and Sewald

Anyone who claims a team has one round of free cuts, so you had to do them all at once and not just Robert. The Commish can either re-activate that for you or do the cuts for you. I would have no objection to this (and don't think anyone else will) since you did not know and you're gaining no real advantage since you claimed the team after the keeper deadline and before the draft.

Stupid question. Why can I not cut anyone (but LRJ) yet? It says the roster is locked? When do they become unlocked?

We have two openings, I have marked both teams abandoned and posted in the Ottoneu community board. Feel free to reach out to any friends etc. I’ll be traveling over the next couple of weeks so I will try and stay on top of it. Let me know if anyone has any questions or concerns. Thanks and I’m looking forward to the start of the season

I hope the league doesn't mind, but I'm going to spam out some trade offers. Normally, I would reach out and chat, but there's limited time until the deadline. Maybe we can have a deal that works for us in the next 24 hours.
Also, I will have a co-owner joining me at some point.

Thanks, Finding!
