What's wrong with 3/10 or 3/11, I'm sure we can figure something out there.
-
Want to clarify I'm good to draft any of the non-3/17 and 18 weekends, but otherwise agreed on all points. Also, I understand why it might be in your guys' favor to prevent me from participating in the draft though it is kind of mean. And all the good players are already on my roster anyway so...

Looks everyone - KRod signed with PHI yesterday, we finally got that Hahn-Moss-Buchter blockbuster resolved, Darvish is bad now because he had 5 tough innings in October...not sure what other information people need before drafting! Given that OG Chris is a commissioner and can't make 3/18 I'd move that we move forward with 2/11. Poor guy already has to watch the Cavs right now - we owe him a few hours of SABR-distraction.
-
Jim (Walking Sticks), Josh (Kinds of Crash), and Lou (Dancin' Homers) are you guys available to draft on 2/11? I read below some preference for later drafting. Given schedules we're hoping to focus more squarely on availability. 2/11 has the most number of votes right now and I don't believe anyone has said they can't draft that day. So as far as I can tell, that's the date we'll get the most number of attendees - albeit not ideal to draft at start of spring training.

The advantage of phrasing this in the negative sense (i.e. when are you NOT available to draft) is rapidly becoming apparent. That's what my response (and lack of availability on 3/17-18) represents.

I'd prefer the 3/18 date, just makes more sense.
-
For the people who did not put 2/11 or 3/18 down...are you actively not available those days? Because if we are missing 4/12 teams then we need to find a weeknight that works for more people.
-
If that is the case, 2/11 and 3/18 each have 8 votes. Shall we make it one of those two days?
-
I can do 2/11 if that's what works best for everyone.
-
Chris (#6 org) and I will be at Spring Training on the weekend of 3/10 and 3/11, so that won't be doable for us two.
-
Top dates are 3/18 (8 votes), 2/11, 3/10, 3/11, 325 (7 votes)
-
I'd like to narrow it down to 3 dates, I like that idea.
-
I'm also okay with 2/11 and it does come about as close to consensus as any other date on the poll (3/18 has one more vote than 2/11 fwiw). I could also do most weeknights but I do think it's tough when we're spread across 4 time zones - hard to make the EST people start at 10pm but also not realistic to expect someone in PST to be ready to draft at 3pm . Maybe the next step is to narrow to 3 dates and vote again? Or the commissioners can cast democracy aside and make a call.

I'm down to try Feb. It's an interesting idea. Plus, looks like the Prospectus is getting shipped early.
-
For me if prefer 2/11. For one reason, that date I know I'm available! I like the idea of drafting in March but will struggle to be able to commit to a date in March until the first week of March. Kane and Chris probably know from other leagues we have played but I travel internationally a lot. And it's always during the week and often Sundays. If I'm in the US I can typically make it work. For what it's worth that's my motivation.

I said before that I think the draft should be in March. Players get hurt or sign with new teams that could affect their value
-
I'll stump for 2/11 one more time: It's post Super Bowl and pre March Madness, so less distractions in that sense. It gets the Firehouse Roto season up and running early. It will likely cause a change in auction draft behavior and, therefore, in season player auctions, cap management, and all that follows. It's this last bit that I find most interesting and want to see how it works out, if the lot of you will get on board (begrudgingly or otherwise).

Short answer: neither. Longer answer: Jim, Lou, and Josh are either unavailable on or uninterested in drafting on 2/11 (Ryan has no opinion). No other weekend dates offer any unanimity. Some interest in a weeknight was indicated in the poll comments.

The draft is long but a lot of that is idle time (bidding on guys you're not particularly interested in). Last year was my first ottoneu draft and I would have had a hard time doing it at work. The order of player nomination is dissimilar to other formats. You may be better at multi-tasking than I am though.

Would be great to hear the impressions of the other guys. If you haven't had much chance to browse Rotographs, there's a wealth of resources on ottoneu procedure and strategy there. One that is particularly germane here is the following, with helpful video demo: (https://www.fangraphs.com/fantasy/the-ottoneu-auction-draft/)

Last year it took ~2.5 hours, the previous year about the same, and the year before that was a little over 3 hours. The initial draft took 6 hours, which we amazingly did in one sitting. So, budget 3 hours and that should cover it. My opinion is the draft is briskly paced, but I'll confess to doing it while at work last year. Nomination is 30 seconds, bids reset the clock by 15 seconds. If prepared and with a solid understanding of the player pool, you can probably multi-task.

A new guy question: Is the auction draft something that moves quickly or fairly slowly? (I'm guessing slowly.) If slow-ish, I could do it anytime. Even at work.

Thanks to everyone who responded to the doodle draft availability data collection instrument posted by other Chris. Ryan and Paul, please provide some dates some we can get the full picture. Lou, did you intend to only input one date?

Also here to remind everyone that we have seven days (including today) to make trades and cuts before going into league wide transactions embargo through to the TBD date for the auction draft. I think everyone is pretty close to where they need to be and know what the plan is, and some guys are still looking to make moves. And who knows, maybe a free agent will, like, sign or something.

WHOA. We're like if the Cleveland Cavs were a fantasy baseball league.
-
That's true. "Poll-ish" people can get emotional.
-
I'm not against having the auction early - you can see that I'm available the first weekend listed. I take issue with the statement that if the survey isn't filled out by an owner ASAP, then it would be "reasonable" to ignore their preferences. I think the survey has been live for...2-3 days now? Let's give it a week or two at least before we start threatening to ignore people's schedules.
-
Fair point that there's no urgency. But there's no great reason to wait either. How many MLB free agents of significance are also free agents in this league? Lorenzo Cain? He's gonna smack 12-15 homers and swipe 20+. In any ballpark. What's the big mystery? Darvish is owned. Arrieta is owned. JDM is owned. Etc. It's hard to get 12 people lined up on the same day, so I get the attempts to do it sooner and then fall back on later. And everyone's on the same playing field any time you draft.
-
Yeah, its actually very unreasonable to demand that it get done this early. This is not an urgent issue. Give people some time. Not all of us know what we will be doing on 3/25 yet. It seems the earliest we're going to be able to do this is mid-Feb anyway. Filling out the poll now, but ease up a bit.
-
Reminder to complete the Doodle poll on available weekends - we've stalled out at six respondents and it seems reasonable that if you don't register your preferences in the poll they can be ignored when planning. Link here: https://doodle.com/poll/2paa9reis8x2mcn3

I would prefer to wait until early March. I like seeing how spring training is going
-
I'd prefer to wait until the end of February or early March for more prep time and hopefully seeing where more of these free agents sign and the timing would be better for my schedule.
-
Fine, fine. I'll make my self available for 2/11, might be a bit tired due to reading a 900 page book in only one day.
-
And, yes, big thank you to Chris F for up the poll-ish doodle thing. To the seven laggards, please click through (as Chris helpfully repeated below like a public radio personality during a pledge drive) and give today! Your draft dates, that is.

All of these preferences/availability are going to be a nightmare to aggregate! How about everyone selects all days that work from this list and then we can pin down a time after we pick a day:
https://doodle.com/poll/2paa9reis8x2mcn3
No account required - just sign up (ideally with your team name) and select each day you could draft. Please be liberal/flexible with your availability - getting 12 adult humans rounded up is tough!
Please complete ASAP!

There's still going to be a lot of uncertainty about free agents/closers/depth chart issues on 2/11. It makes auctioning that early a gamble that we will all have to live with for the season. However, I just looked at my schedule for March and I'm swamped so on second thought, 2/11 should work for me.
-
For those hesitant to draft on 2/11, is it b/c you do not feel you have enough time to do your research or preference for getting ST info to inform your auction draft decisions? None of the above? If so, that's fine and we'll draft in March (like normal red blooded Americans). I'm interested to your response to the above question, though, in either event.
