I'm about to lose my final day of pitching that I had planned because Gerrit Cole is going to pitch a full 9 innings.
-
My intention wasn’t addressing 60d IL players. My concern is of the most extreme case: what if an owner bid on every single free agent right before the season ended?

I know the strategy Devon mentioned is something used in Ottoneu (Chad Young even had an instruction article on how to do it last year). I'm not opposed to limiting that. But, we shouldn't punish people using the rules as intended. I have 4 60-Day IL players and no obvious cuts.
The keeper deadline being Jan. 31 also minimizes the effectiveness of that strategy. Hard to know more about a player's potential before spring training even starts.

Also, I feel like any decent player on the 60IL is already on a roster. If one of those players did get cut, it’s likely because their salary is too high. If someone wants to scoop up all the $5 Anthony Rendons out there, I’m ok taking the L if he somehow becomes worth that price in the off-season
-
I’m pretty sure MLB teams have to remove the 60IL designation sometime in the off-season. So if a manager did do what Devon just proposed, they would have to cut most of them before the cut deadline in January
-
There are over fifty 60 day IL free agents that are at least 1% owned. In theory a team with extra cap like myself or papi could pick up a ridiculous number of 60 day IL players just on hopes that 1 of 20 gets positive off season news. Most if not all 60 day IL'ers are worth less than arbitration but just putting that put there to consider
-
That's a good question, if there are no limits normally, then I'm fine with that too. I can't remember if 60 day IL stuff automatically gets removed in the offseason or not.
-
I'm a little confused. What's the behavior we'd be trying to curtail with a new rule? Isn't the reason there's no roster size penalty in the off-season so you are not punished for all 60-day IL designations being removed automatically?

I would not be against a cap on 60 day IL players. Otherwise will pick more IL guys
-
I agree with the normal 40 non 60 day IL players. Unless someone has a very compelling argument for something different.
-
I do think no matter the limit, teams should be legal (40 non 60 day IL players)
-
45? I am biased with E Diaz on my team but do think carrying over some 60 day IL people should be allowed.
-
What does everyone think regarding roster limit size for the offseason?

If RA Dickey didn't exist I think Tim Wakefield would have possible pathway to hall of fame. There aren't any real pitcher hitters to compare Ohthani to. Closest comp i can think is mad bum who was/is a pitcher that can hit. Ohthani for 5 seasons was a genuine 2 way player that would start on every team in mlb both sides. The hall is for the best at each position or skill and do think 2 way unique skill.
-
So many things wrong with that statement. Where to begin......

If he retired this season I think Ohthani should get an exception for 5 years hitting, 5 years pitching. And he should get in as best pitcher hitter because there are so few comparisons. kind of like how Devin Hester will eventually get into the football hall of fame as a kick returner.
-
Since the HoF requires a minimum of ten years MLB service time for admission, 0htani won't be getting in any time soon. Unless he shells out the twenty-eight bucks for the entrance fee like the rest of us.
As for his never playing in the post season, there's a bunch of Hall of Famers (about 10 or 12?) who never did.

Sorry I didn’t include his nearly 12 fWAR for pitching so he’s over 31 total fWAR. Better than I initially thought but I think still some way for him to go. If he could get to something closer to 50 fWAR over a 10 year stretch that might be a good enough peak.
-
I love Ohtani and he is definitely on a HOF track but not there yet. About 20 career fWAR so far. Are we really prepared to put him into the company of Edgar Martinez, Frank Thomas, Harold Baines and David Ortiz? Ohtani is close to having the right kind of “peak” necessary but the longevity just isn’t there yet. If he’s going to not be viewed as a DH I think he needs to come back from this UCL injury and pitch well for a little while still. He’s very unique and I love the guy, just not there yet
-
I think it's just a question of how many ballots. He's -30,000 odds to win MVP this year and that should clinch it
-
I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s already HOF bound but regardless doubt that he needs 6-8 more really good years. 1 or 2 probably clinches it.
-
Ohtani isn't in the Hall of Fame yet, let alone undisputed. Well on his way, but still needs to put in 6-8 more very good years.

Ohthani is crazier for going out of his way to pick the angels. Ohthani and Trout are undisputed hall of famers even if they retired today, but I wonder if anyone in the HOF has less post season experience.
-
Doesn’t seem likely to add to that total any time soon either. Even if the Angels could ever make the playoffs, 50/50 he’d be injured.
-
Crazier than Mike Trout's 3 career playoff games in 13 seasons?

Pretty crazy Ohtani hasn't been to the playoffs yet.
-
I have no problem with announcers giving him all the praise possible all the time. We've never seen anything close to what he is doing.
-
As long as you can mute the broadcasts when the announcers are blowing him.
-
It seems Ohtani’s UCL said enough is enough, was still an incredible run by him these past few years. Hoping he can still keep hitting. Baseball is definitely better with him on the field.
-
Yeah those guys haven’t exactly been rays of sunshine this week. Also makes the J-Rod trade sting more, he’s been taking and Shane is done until 2025 and Bryce hasn’t come around yet. Still have a shot but Squirrels is in a good spot. I need more pitching if anyone wants to deal!
-
Real tough break for Walnut Hill this past few weeks losing McClanahan and Wander Franco.
-
I was so close to sitting Michael Lorenzen today.
-
This makes me want to trade for Ramirez @pickoffPicks. What a clean shot
-
If you guys get a chance check out the White Sox Guardians game. A huge fight occurred. Jose Ramirez and Tim Anderson, Ramirez hit Anderson squarely on the chin and knocked him on his ass.
-
Thanks, Squirrels. Here’s to hoping I can make these last 2 months interesting!
-
Gotta give some props to Tumbleweed Futures for hanging around. Would probably be pacing to win a lot of leagues right now.
-
Anyone want to take a shot on Severino? He isn't getting another start for me this season.
-
Squirrels is pulling away and definitely in the driver's seat but I am still not throwing in the towel. Open to discussions involving aces/good-great RP's or other clear positional upgrades to try to make a push towards the end. However, if the gap between us on a rate basis continues to grow I will be less and less inclined to attempt to acquire the rental or elite but cut type players.
-
I know pickoff is still very bullish on torkelson and Mize. 5 I think is fair Market value but agreed that all high draft picks should go above true point value considering best case they enter the majors in 1.5 Years.
-
Skenes went for 21 in one of my leagues. I know I just traded, but only would have moved for some one I really value like carter and was planning on holding. Think Skenes ceiling is worth the risk and If had signs of trouble could drop at end of the season and reset price in auction.
-
Yeah I have to agree. That is setting a very high bar for what Skenes needs to accomplish. There are only 21 starting pitchers who are currently over $15, so for him to be worth $16, he basically needs to be a top-25 SP which is a pretty high bar for someone who just got drafted. Granted, the ceiling for Skenes is super high, so I understand the inclination to take that kind of shot on him. Not saying it's a stupid move or has no chance to pay off, but I sure wouldn't pay that much for him.
-
IMO, $16 is way too much for Skenes and even $5 for Langford is too much. Anyone remember Mize? Torkelson? Two years ago Langford wasn't even starting in college.
-
Granted I had 4 starting pitchers, but a win is a win!
-
It is going to be really interesting to see how things shake up next season. Walnut and I going all in feels like it will almost do a hard reset for the league and open up the door for almost anyone to build a competitive team over the next two years. We will probably set some sort of record for the least amount of keepers on the top two teams in the league.
-
Not that I think any comments are intended to reference me, but I did a quick audit yesterday of trades I've made since taking over the past offseason. I'm pleased with my success rate and generally think my team is set up well to take a step forward.
-
I especially don't have a problem with longterm owners like Squirrels that go all in. New owners that swoop in and grab a team with promising players and prospects that sell them off for a one year crash and burn all-in and then leave the following year are not good for a league.
-
It takes two for trades ! Blame the other owners in this league lol

Still rooting for the underdogs though
-
Agreed all my trades with Squirrells were fair at time of trade and in retrospect feel like healthy mix of win losses and ties. And I know we talked about Rule change but do not support. Going all in on a single season happens in real life, has risk and makes for better off season auction.
-
Thanks, Winnetka! I'm still upset it didn't get me past the OPL cut, but hopefully it can get me my first league win!
