I listened to Casey Stern yesterday afternoon who chastized a listener for being unhappy with what the Giants were doing this year. I sympathized with the listener. Longoria did not make the Giants much better in the near term, and far worse in the long term. Christian Arroyo was big compensation for a 32.5 year old declining 3rd baseman that has 5yrs and $68 million left on his contract.

Another over 30 "face of the franchise" player... That would fit with the Giants recent M.O. I suspect the Brewers would love to get tid of Braun's contract. But then they would probably just sign yet another outfielder.
-
The Braun to Giants comment was more tongue in cheek since they seem to be stockpiling face of the franchise players in their 30's, but there are definitely more dominoes to fall in the OF for Milwaukee. I doubt they go into the season with an OF of Santana, Cain, Yelich, Braun, Broxton & Phillips.
-
I find the Brewers' deals to be headscratchers. Their OF was good as it was. Cain should be worth the money, as his starting point is as a 4 WAR player and he is earning only $16M. But the Brewers added 2 outfielders when they already had 5 good outfielders. I assume there will be another trade or two coming.
-
Bryce mentioned the Giants. The Giants have ZERO great prospects, and not much depth. By the way, I hated the Giants trade for Longoria.

If the Brewers trade Braun or Santana will they get more than what they gave up? Seems doubtful. The Brewers effectively added $23 million in payroll over the next five years. That is significant to that franchise. Is their outfield better off now? Seems to be me, that money would have been better spent on Darvish/Arrieta/Cobb/Lynn.

My point is that this trade did not necessarily make them better. Will Yelich be better than Brinson over the next three years? I'm not sure. But he will cost the Brewers approximately $8 million more per year. We can ask the same question regarding Cain vs Phillips except that Cain will cost $15 million more per year. Cain is going to be 32 years old next year. What about Domingo Santana? Santana was a MUCH better hitter than Yelich last year. Does he sit? Get traded?

Acquired them both in a span of about 2 hours it looks like! That's crazy, Miami actually got quite the haul from Milwaukee.

They gotta do something to replace Ryan Braun when the Giants come calling...

Wow! Fun to see a small market team be aggressive.
-
I like the Milwaukee Brewers, they are kind of like the Cubs little brother. But what the hell are they doing???
In case you haven't heard, they traded for Yelich and gave Cain 5/80.

Spa City Thoroughbreds's trade block has been updated!

If anybody wants to stir things up before the keeper deadline, I have no idea which direction to go with my team and I'm up for trade ideas. My roster is weak at C-1B-2B-OF4-OF5-Util-RP3-RP4-RP5 & Bench. I could make another attempt at a championship run, but I am also open to a tear-down. More than anything, I have nothing meaningful to do at work, so I have tons of time to fill.

Based upon the Doodle poll inputs, I would propose the auction draft be Friday, March 2nd at 8pm ET, 5pm PT, which I think is Sat 2pm NZDT (but Hobbit please confirm). If that time does not work for you, please quickly fill out the Doodle poll with your availability so we can lock this down. https://doodle.com/poll/bdkrg4pnyqw2hima. Thanks!

This is shaping up to be an interesting league next year. I am on the fence about rebuilding with cheap players and prospects. But the best trade options I had this off season were for higher priced players, so I went with it. Several teams have a LOT of potential. If you are looking for a player to put you over the top, my stars are available in the right deal.

Still have some very good pitching left: Arrieta, Cole, Giolito, Matz, Chapman, Verlander. Also a few good bats as well: Inciarte, Y Diaz, M Franco, Smoak, O'Neil (now with Piscotty and Grichuk gone he should get his chance)

Thank you! I honestly was a bit insecure sending it because the pennant Spa City made for me was so fantastic.

Classy move by Winnetka to get a pennant made for the champion Spa City Thoroughbreds!
-
The 2017 pennant arrived today. It is fantastic; hanging proudly ion my wall to remember my fantasy team's glorious 2017 season. Thoroughbred fans across the country are ready to defend their title, but looking at rosters I get the sense the Thoroughbreds face an uphill battle in 2018.

I just sent out a Doodle calendar invite via email to see if we can find a date and time that works for everyone.
-
Saturday evening? Feb. 10th. That would be Sunday in New Zealand. The time might wind up awkward for NZ - If I understand correctly, NZ is +13 hours from east coast time. But we should be able to find something that works for everybody.
-
sunday your time is monday my time. That's an issue for me

The next weekend works for me. Feb 18th? I am having rotator cuff surgery on the 14th, so I will be using my weak arm in the draft... I will be typing slowly.

I can't do the 11th but would be available the next weekend.

We usually hold the draft for this league the Sunday after the Super Bowl, which will be the 11th this year. Can we get the draft date set so everybody can plan around it? With 4 leagues, I need to get draft dates set so I can make them all. I assume most of us have multiple leagues. Does Feb 11 work for everyone? Maybe around 7 pm eastern?

It is one those trades for Houston that gives them a much better chance at returning to the playoffs, perhaps winning more than 100 games again. But it doesn't make them much scarier in the playoffs.

I thought it was a very nice return for Pittsburgh and a trade that makes sense for Houston. A rare true win/win trade in sports.

Gerrit Cole is Houston's problem now. Pirate fandom is getting upset, but I like the trade for the Bucs. None of the players are likely to be stars, but they all have value. Feliz gives Pirates another potential closer, and Musgrove can probably be a reasonably solid 3rd or 4th starter. Moran is probably a boring, 2 WAR player, but he is better than what the Bucs would have played there without him (Freese? SRod?).

SP is the hardest part of the game. Once you get past the upper tier, pitchers are fungible - not much difference between the 30th SP and the 60th SP. I could trade one or two SPs, but not for garbage players.
-
I’m in four leagues and I know there is a serious shortage of SP. We have three weeks left. If I were the rest of you, I would be sending offers , because I am going to keep as many as I can afford, knowing I’ll be able to trade them for much more when the auction draft is over.
