After thought and consideration if we're moving forward with this season as if it were normal I will be cutting players in order to remain as competitive as possible for the season.
-
Done
-
Cut Price please.
-
One of us will do it.
-
Alright, I want to cut Sale and Machado. Do I just do it myself or does the commish need to do it? Thanks.
-
Draft date works for me. As for prizes this year, I’m down for whatever. Pro’s and con’s to each. This is my first year doing Ottoneu so I lean towards pushing it to next year. Nobody predicted this. It’s just a shit deal no matter how we spin it. We might get 20 games in and the shortened season crumbles. Just ready for some baseball!
-
accommodations for this by allowing the additional roster spot. The only tricky part is budgeting for the possibility of needing to replace a few players due to the virus and being tight on cash. That obviously changes strategy for this season and throws a giant variable into the mix. That is largely the reason that I believe that we should re-open roster moves to allow teams to get ready for an unusual season.
-
I won't be dropping anyone due to non COVID issues. Even then I likely won't because the roster spot won't ding me. I don't see an issue with allowing people to drop without penalty right now. The season is quite different than a normal season so I think that it's ok to re-access rosters while adjusting strategy. I would propose that we open roster moves up for a determined amount of time. This would allow all owners to be on same playing ground. Once in season I think that Otto has made

Sounds like quite a racket you guys are running here. Looking forward to trading season (if you allow it).

Snells and I had a long text exchange over how we wanted to shape the league this year. We weighed what we consider to be the pros and cons. We made our decision as the co-commish's together and it is what it is.
-
And re the vote on cuts the answer is no. Both commishes are on board and we govern. Sorry. Also: no one has asked for one yet so it doesn't really seem to be an issue worth belaboring any more does it?
-
If I had listened to the new people we would have drafted in March. I went with what I thought was right even though you guys told me I was wrong and it worked out for the best. I'm sure the lonesome unlaid nerds of slack would have hated that decision too.
-
It's kinda like how regulars at a restaurant, regulars at a whiskey shop, long-time members of any community tend to get more favor. It's not unique, it's not odd. If we let the couple spots in this league that change ownership every year or two make the most noise and the majority, who have been here forever, let that slide, then the league works only for the transient owners. This isn't that league. I'm admittedly an activist commish, that's sometimes the nature of this league.
-
I don't regret stopping that holiday-weekend trade and I don't regret a position that favors the people who have been in this league for a decade over the people who have not played a game yet. If your MO is to shit-talk on slack and act like the lowest common denominator of know-it-all baseball stats nerd this isn't going to be a good fit for you long-term. Or you can chill and become one of those long-term owners and I think you'll find that you like it here.
-
Bob, I've been roasted a whole bunch of times on Slack. One was when, about three weeks into the season, one team sent another team $100 worth of players and a loan to cover them on a holiday weekend. I stopped the trade and told them to try it again after the holiday weekend. They didn't re-do the trade. They did roast me on Slack. Because I give zero shits what strangers on the internet think of fantasy baseball leagues they don't belong to, it didn't bother me much.
-
And I hear you got roasted on Slack for not allowing each team an equal vote, so I'm hopeful that you've moved away from your arbitrary "weighted-voting" idea.

We all know what your preferences are, commish. And maybe those preferences align with a majority of this league. But can we please find that out for sure by allowing a vote instead of having non-standard rules imposed on us?

I think extending cuts is vital, and I'm glad we delayed our auction. We will be playing a lousy situation but with the best available info on Opening Day, whereas many leagues are handicapped by drafting in March. I'm a big fan of playing with information rather than without.

7/22 draft works for me-I like the idea of re-opening cuts for whatever reason, active illness, major injury, threat of lengthy paternity leave, change in our value calculations, anything. Appreciate that this is a unique situation and that keep/cut decisions from almost 6 (!) months ago may have aged poorly
-
7/22 works me.
-
Am ready to play ball! July 22 draft at anytime works for me. would vote to play by current rules/payouts and then deal w/ it if MLB isnt able to complete an official season.
-
Just let me know #whenandwhere. First year doing ottoneu. For draft time. 7/22 at 7pm central works. Just around time i put daughter down so ill be in and out for bit.
-
I don't think we should deviate from Ottoneu's built-in rules, so I don't think we should be allowed to make cuts. I understand that the commish has personal preferences, but being able to cut Severino penalty-free is just a hand-out. Would Snells then be able to bid on Severino at a reduced price and then stash him on the DL? Not following default rules only creates more loopholes that will have to be filled by more ad hoc rules that will be difficult to enforce. Let's play by the rules.

I don't disagree. Assuming that antibodies actually matter. I'm just curious about how we feel about if I should be able to cut Severino penalty free for instance. Not COVID related at all.
-
I am okay with cuts due to nature of the offseason. Why anybody would cut a player who gets covid now is beyond me. In my mind, Charlie Blackmon is the most valuable star in the league now due to those antibodies he will have.
-
Good for me.
Regarding cuts. As a league are we ok with ANY cuts without penalty or COVID related cuts only? Curious everyone's thoughts.
-
Good for me.

Does Wednesday the 22nd at 8PM EST work? I believe opening day is the following day. That way we can cut it very close and have up-to-date info on players who are out to illness, etc. I would then leave cuts open until Monday the 20th at 8PM EST so that if you have a sick star you can cut him, and other teams have 48 hours to weigh the option to incorporate him into auction plans. Is this good for everyone?
-
can generally make most things work, but west coast here - so after 8 Eastern on weekdays is easiest
-
As a friendly reminder, you may cut a player without penalty between now and our draft. There have been a flurry of "12 Phillies have COVID" type reports, and we've even had a report now that Charlie Blackmon and two teammates tested positive after a workout at Coors.
-
8pm EDT or later works best for me

I'm not particularly happy about this since I'd rather play a full, immersive, strategic season then just be like "It's a free for all, last man not knocked out with a folding chair wins!" but whatever. We need to set a draft day, I guess. Please advise on what limits you have for drafting in the middle to back end of July.

In talking with Niv, it appears there are legal requirements of online fantasy sports to pay out prize money they have collected if a season is completed. I asked what "completed" means and he said "the 60 game season as proposed now." I asked if a handful of teams only play 40 and the rest play 60, is that "completed" and he hasn't given me a reply. So he's basically, regardless of what we do, going to require that our prize pool money is awarded whether the league

It's surely a strange situation and hoping to move forward without a lot of internet chat room style comebacks and flexing. Even saying that feels cheesy. I'm here because I like baseball and want to follow it and compete with other players that are interested in the game. I've played in this league 6 full years and think I've been pretty active. I've been amazed that Chief Benders puts together a top 25 site-wide roster each year. Let's figure these things out and make the best of it.
-
I like no arbitration this year and no voting players off rosters. It's a weird year, let's pause on some of the of regular Ottoneu operations. I'm fine with the money either way. I'm going to play whatever year we have this year and would expect to play next year. Pick a draft date and I'll be there. I previously thought we could draft whenever and live with the consequences (as MLB teams signed Free Agents months ago), but not upset to have more information at the start of this "seas
-
That's cool, if you want to switch, switch. I don't want to play a 60-game season that might be 20 or 40 or 12 and I don't want to leave or change the league I started 10 years ago and give up the team I've had for 10 years, I want to resume playing my dynasty league when baseball is back to normal.
-
Honestly, after you email about long you have been in the league, I emailed Niv and asked if he would let me switch $100 leagues. We can agree to disagree. I am just trying to play fantasy baseball and it looks like this league will not this year.
-
Just how I feel about the sport, my team (Go Giants!), my love of the game and this crazy-ass fantasy baseball stuff. I hope you are all safe and healthy and watching old ballgames on YouTube!
-
Bet all you want, the math wins every single time and the math lately is pointing to the denizens of this fair land having a much longer row to hoe. Covid, strike, World War...regardless...I'm playing my team as if I were a real manager/owner. Keep them safe until the coast is really clear and it's time to play ball. Long term economic happiness and gain; short term profit can wilt while I wait. And to be explicit, this isn't directed at AC or The Gambler or anybody in this league.
-
Except we're not. You're opting to buy $100 in chips at the blackjack table, and I'm willing to go home if I can't get a good table in the poker room.
-
I think to some degree soccer has given us the model. They have had plenty of players test positive and have still played on. I would like to bet my $100 against yours in fantasy baseball. We are all playing the same hand here.
-
Please keep in mind--and Niv is not considering this, short-sightedly--that if, say, one player from the Rangers tests positive they will test the whole team, then the union might demand player safety protocol and cite the chance of false negatives, and like that the Rangers could be shut down 2 weeks. Their opponents could lose those games. What are the odds something like this happens? They're not zero, they're probably not as low as 10%.
-
I'll bet you, Gambler, if you like gambling, the same $100 as my entry against that amount of yours, that all 30 MLB teams will not play a full 60 games this year. Houston, Miami, Dallas/Arlington, LA (2 teams), Seattle, Kansas City, those MLB cities and more are on an uptick in COVID cases. They opened too soon and there's a spike and it's not even peaked yet. You might chill, give it a few weeks, and see how it plays out.
-
Right, but what is the quickest vaccine ever created? Are you just going to delay every year until we get a 162 game season? We knew in April, if we had baseball, it would be abbreviated. And guess what, it is an abbreviated schedule. The most talented baseball players are basically the same ones people will draft. This is suppose to be fun. We are supposed to be excited about baseball starting up. Instead, I have to listen to a diatribe about how long you have been in the league. belch.
-
The counter to that is that this is not gambling, this is calculated risk with strategy. The reality of COVID is that no one know what is going to happen. Remember in April when I called off the draft and it was "why call it off, we know what's going to happen?" No one knew then, and no one knows now, if this season will finish. Texas is about to be shut down. Canada has not agreed to accept games. You don't know, I don't know, and every other season we know the schedule of 162.
-
Would everybody who hasn’t stated their vote on playing for money this year please weigh in one way or another? I don’t mind being outvoted, but “outweighed” is a bit rich, the league wouldn’t still be running without the new folks.
-
Bob - I just sent Niv a message asking if I could switch this league for another $100 league. I am just a "newbie" and don't matter. But my thought is that it is only a $100 and we are all playing under the same circumstances, so why not play for prize money. There is always an element of luck/injury to baseball. I see covid as part of the game now and until we have a vaccine, which could be years. I prefer a league that is willing to deal with the reality of Covid.
-
So between me, Snells, Coit there's about $3K in entry fees paid into this league, to $100 that you've paid so far. If there were a vote, each of us would get 10 votes (1 per season) to your 1. We have a core group of folks who have been here a loooong time and we have a few teams that turnover a lot. We don't manage the league based on the needs of the noobs. Stick around a few years and you'll pull more weight.
