While on this topic, please note that I am willing to trade cap space or take on salary for prospects. That is all. :)
-
This is the first year I've been up against the cap and it sucks. I like to be a lot more active on free agents and prospects. One way some people deal with this is a salary dump trade. Some teams even trade a middling player for *nothing* in return, basically just like dropping the player but without the 50% salary penalty. Some owners have frowned on this in the past, but it happens and is not against the rules.
-
solid advice from Trea Huggers. One area of frequent confusion is related to this part: "If someone else auctions or claims a player you cut, your cap hit for that player goes away." Note that it doesn't matter whether the other team picks the player up during the waiver period (24 hours after the drop for current salary, no auction, lowest teams get priority) or as a regular free agent auction. This penalty and potential forgiveness lasts for the duration of the current season onl
-
I personally don't cut players until I need the roster spot/cash personally, but I know not everyone shares that approach.
-
Cutting a player results in a cap hit of half his cost, rounded up to the nearest dollar (e.g. cutting a $5 player results in a $3 cap hit). You also cannot start an auction or bid on that player for 30 days. If someone else auctions or claims a player you cut, your cap hit for that player goes away. So there are strategic reasons to cut someone who you think someone else will claim/auction, but it usually comes down to how much cash you need for a particular move.
-
Going over the cap is definitely something to worry about. If you go over the cap in season you can't bid on players, propose trades, or even set your lineup. What you saw as far as people over the cap in the offseason happened because once the season is over player costs increase by $2 ($1 for minor leaguers) plus any arbitration allocated by other owners, but in the offseason there are no penalties for being over the cap.
-
Does anyone have advice for a beginner on how to approach cutting/adding players in Ottoneu? I'm in this league and an inaugural 'Ottoneu 101' league. They are my first auction/dollar value leagues as I've always played in redraft leagues in the past. You take a cap hit when you drop someone, yes? But I saw that in this league, at the end of last season, it seemed like most people were over cap so apparently that isn't something to worry about?

If I couldn't cut the season short last year, you can't this year Pete!

Seriously. I had I think it was Iwakuma on the bench when he threw his no-hitter. My first time in first place in a couple years! Can the season end *right now*?

I second team Glasnow's post.

No reason. It's apparently relatively common for a pitchers debut to take a while to show up. It should show up in a day or 3.

Any reason I wouldn't get credit for Garretts start yesterday? Am I missing something?

I'm looking to move a 2B. Either Cano or Murphy. Pretty open on return, but particularly interested in OF.

Makes sense to me. Thank you both and thanks for the resource share, it's appreciated!

It also allows you to use alternate strategies like carry 2 or 3 "bat-first" platoon catchers and start them against opposite handed guys, in hitter's parks, etc. Like in the past, guys like John Jaso, Ryan Doumit, Kelly Shoppach, etc. Here is an article on this: http://www.fangraphs.com/fantasy/chronicles-of-ottoneu-platoon-catcher-strategy/ I have been doing this in the outfield as well lately - hence Seth Smith and Hyun-Soo Kim on my roster who are helpless against LHP.
-
Yeah, having two spots allows you to avoid bad matchups a bit easier than if you just had one slot. Be careful starting two catchers all the time though; you'll reach your cap by the All-Star Break!
-
Glad you explained that - thank you. So it's safe play to just leave the two catchers I have in? Or maybe sit your backup in a tough matchup as it's likely going to be bad innings against the cap?
-
You have a 162 game cap for catchers, so you effectively score one catcher position for the year, but you can play two catchers on a single day and have both their stats count for the day. This helps reach game caps because you don't have to have one catcher active every single day; you can basically platoon them on the same day.
-
I believe I've already seen this in writing somewhere but just to confirm, we only score one Catcher, the 2nd catcher is just a backup who is placed below the starting catcher within the active roster?

We have 10/10 people agreeing to the 11th of March at 8pm with Jim saying he can make any date and I haven't heard back from John. The date seems to be a clear winner - as at least 2 people lose out for the next best date.

Current leader is Saturday the 11th of March at 8pm which 9 of you can make (2019 Champs being ok with all slots). Current backup is Sunday the 5th at 8pm. Still need to hear from Pete, John and Glasnow (sorry, don't think I know your name?)

The weight gain from one has been enough thanks and some of the cost of child impacts my booze budget. On that note - please fill out the following poll https://doodle.com/poll/a2bf7nzr9n77acf4 I can always fiddle the times and add more sunday (USA) times - that just happens to correspond to Monday my time, a few weeks before the end of the tax year.
