• I run a league that has an milb roster.
  Players are listed as restricted players and have to be promoted once they have a major league at bat or inning pitched.
  It makes record keeping easy.
  The only way to drop a player is to add him to your roster at a dollar and dropped from your major league roster. So player maintains the $1 salary

• dropped from your roster. It becomes a little cumbersome for the commissioner to monitor rookie status but it's a fun addition to the game. MiLB players can also be included in trades, etc.

Another league I've been in for a while has separate MiLB rosters (on a shared Google sheet), 5 spots per team and a separate draft after the regular MLB draft for those spots. You can call up a player to your MLB roster at any time. When called up the player is assigned a $1 value. But you must have an open spot for that player. Player cannot be dropped back to minors.
