You’d face cap penalties for the players you’d drop. It’d be more cost effective to bid $2-3 (which would certainly be the high bid for nearly every free agent scenario). Ideally, you’re not going to add a player unless you want that player.

So what if I want one player, and only one player? Bid on three and drop the two I don't want if I get them all? (Sorry if these are basic questions. If there is info on free agent pickups more detailed than what's in the official rules, please let me know.)
-
No conditional bids, and you don’t immediately need to have the money available for the bid to be approved and you can go over roster size to add a player, BUT if you’re over roster limit or over the cap you’re roster is frozen until a player is dropped and/or you’re back under the cap.

Are there conditional bids? For example, does it only give me the second highest bid player I'm bidding on if I don't get the first? Also, do we have to have roster and cap space available BEFORE the auction or can we fix it after we win the bid?

You can start two catchers, but you’re limited to 162 games total at the position.
-
Do we start 2 catchers? The FAQ says only one catcher, but my starting roster page shows 2 catcher slots. Thanks!
-
For anyone looking to add players... Go to the 'PLAYERS' tab, set your search parameters, click on the name of the player you'd like to add, select 'START AUCTION'. The player is up for auction for 48 hours and goes to the highest bid for that price (min. bid being $1).

Welcome to Draft weekend! If anyone is running a couple minutes late Sunday night and want to request we wait up, please text me, otherwise we’re going to get started right at 5pm ET Sunday, so please try to be in the draft room a few minutes early so you don’t miss anything. Thanks everyone.

It looks like the majority vote is to complete the draft on the 18th. If anyone needs to contact me, my number is 574-222-4936. Preferably text.

I don't think so, but I did find this spreadsheet (below). Also, you could try some kind of draft software like RotoChamp. Last I checked, they were offering it free with a $10 deposit to Fanduel. The prices won't be specific to the results of Ottoneu drafts, but you can adjust their setting to match our league settings and scoring and it will provide you a suggested $ for every player, though minus prospect value.

Is there a resource that has this year’s average auction bids for new leagues? I can see min/max lists, but that includes some players where they were bid years ago like Altuve at $15. Obviously trying to get an idea of what makes sense for a new league where all players are auctioned off with $400 per team.
-
That is correct regarding spots. Most teams drafted about 35-38 players to leave a few spots open, a few (including myself) drafted 40. You can click into the Auction Draft tab now and play around with it a little. It's very limited and not well organized. My advice would be have a separate spreadsheet of players and values handy to cross off as you go, and pen and paper to keep track of your roster. Use the watchlist feature to keep players ready for when your nomination spot is up.
-
That is my understanding.
-
Oh, I see. So we can draft as many or as few players as we want, as long as we have $1 per empty slot remaining when we leave the draft. Correct?
-
@Project Mayhem, I think most teams draft at least 30 players and then acquire others in free agency. Some teams go ahead and draft all 40 spots.

One Final Poll.

For the auction draft, do we draft all 40 players? Or do we only auction the 22 starters, then something else for the bench players?
-
I had my first Ottoneu draft last night. Roughly 200 players were drafted (480 will be in ours) and it took just over 2.5 hours, including a short break. So, I'd expect ours to take roughly 6 hours. I'm game for trying to get it all done in one night, but for the sake of keeping our options open, I've started a poll for a potential second night. If we find a 2nd night that works, then we'll vote to either keep 1 night or split it up...

Awesome. Thank you
-
Sorry guys, that works for me on the 18th. Sorry I was responding to the polls but must have missed the email. I am very much looking forward to my first year! I am good with trying to knock it out in one night but also open to finishing it up on a second night.
-
I sent Rays an email about the draft date. If I can’t some confirmation they’re still in, I’ll find a replacement. There is no auto-draft, as far as I can tell, so this really does require all 12 players be present. I have my first Ottoneu Draft next Sunday, so I’ll have a better idea of how everything operates, and how long we can expect our draft to be after that. Then, we can decide whether selecting a second night is going to be necessary.
-
Glad we have a date set. Thanks for organizing Commish. So are we going to remove that team and add another? Does ottoneu autodraft for teams that aren't at the draft? Also, can we do another poll to pick nights that work for the later rounds?

I never received I response from Rambling Rays regarding the draft date, so we’re set to go for March 18, 5pm ET. We’ll get as much done that night as possible. If need be, we may have to scramble to get in an hour or two some night before the opener, but at least we have a night set to get the bulk of the draft done.
-
New poll. Let’s see if we can get draft dates finalized. Again, vote for all options that apply. If you absolutely can’t make either option work, let me know.

I’ll give this initial poll one more day and then I’ll narrow it down to just a couple options to set our final draft plan.
-
Multiple days sounds good, but could make scheduling a bit more difficult. Does anyone object to breaking this up over the course of 2-3 days, rather than all in one shot? Right now, the evenings of March 3-4, or back-to-back Sunday evenings, March 18 and 25th look like our best bet.
-
All Ottoneu leagues only do 12 teams.
-
How long is the draft expected to take?
This is a keeper league, right?
Anyone want to try to get 16 teams?

I agree that multiple days is better, perhaps we commit to a certain duration (3 or 4 hours) for the time slots and then do the auction over 2 to 3 days (time slots)
