when do we start arbitration ?
-
Hi, and welcome to the league VIEWOFDELFT. I'm not familiar with how to pronounce that name. Is it... German? ;)
-
Hi, everybody. I've taken over the Italian Stallions and I'm looking forward to playing in the league. In my nearly twenty years of playing fantasy baseball, I've never taken over a team before, so it'll be fun managing what somebody else has built.
-
I just wanted to let everyone know that Italian Stallions will be not returning this season, I’m going to abandon his team so that we can get a replacement owner before arbitration.

I probably should have been more clear in my earlier posts about arbitration. I'm a strong believer of arbitration, meaning if you do not arbitrate, then you should be removed as an owner. I do apologize if that seems harsh but arbitration is not a difficult task and is very important to the health of the league. If owners cannot take the time to arbitrate, then they probably do not have time to manage a team.
-
Regarding pricing, yes. That was the case for stars, especially the first year draft when everyone was flush with cash. There were some domino effects. After a few hours of mulling, someone might go up a $1 or $2 on Goldschmidt. That brought in a new high bidder for him, so the old bidder upped the bid elsewhere. Here is a link to a slow auction in progress (not sure what these guys are doing, but it shows the layout and general idea): http://www.couchmanagers.com/auctions/?auction_id=19
-
(Btw, it might be too early to tell, but we will likely need to recruit a new owner or 2 in our other Dynasty.) Going back to the Slow Auction idea, the main question I had is concerning the pricing. With so much time before you hear 'SOLD!', do you find that players' prices get inflated, compared to normal auctions?

I for one admit it's interesting. Not only do I find auctions too fast, but I also like team-building over a few weeks in preseason, rather than doing it all at once in one marathon session. It's more organic, and you can gain a bit of perspective in the downtime. In the other Dynasty Leagues I play in with Cup, it takes us several weeks to go through various stages, and I can see what you mean by ADDICTIVE! Makes the winter months much more interesting leading up to Opening Day

For the first year auction, the slow draft took a little over a week. For the second year, I think it was only 3 or 4 days. It's incredibly addicting.
-
At the beginning of the auction, each owner nominates their set number of players (whether it is two, three four, etc.). It's best to start with 2 or 3 nominations with longer auction times (~24 hours with 8 hour reset), so owners can get up to speed. By the end, we are almost always up to 4 nominations per owner with 12 hour auctions and a 4 to 6 hour reset. The injury side would be at the discretion of the league/commissioners. We have not had any injuries occur during the auction.
-
I've never done a slow draft, so just speaking for myself, I'm open to the idea and kind of curious about how it works. Does every owner nominate their three (or whatever number) players at the same time, or is it one owner at a time? What do people generally do if there is an injury or some other significant bad news that breaks while a player is being auctioned? Is the most recent high bidder just stuck overpaying?
-
Also, Couch Managers...not Couch Mangers. Oops.
-
Example: If I bid $50 on a player and the next highest bidder goes to $26, I get the player for $27. If there is an 8 hour reset in place, If I bid $20 and in the last 8 hours another owner bids $21 or more, the auction is live for another 8 hours. It's a blast and it's much easier to coordinate than 12 owners live at the same time.
-
Congrats to the top three! Regarding the draft, is there any interest in doing a slow draft? We use Couch Mangers in another of my leagues and it is a blast. Basic idea is that each team gets 3 or four nominations. Each player is up for auction for a certain amount of time (we choose the length) and if a new high bidder is in place there is an option to have additional time added. Once the auction is done, the nominating owner gets another nomination.
-
Furthermore, I wanted to announce that I plan on adding G-Men as a co-commissioner. I thought it would be best if I found a co-commish in case something comes up because it will make things easier. I believe G-Men would be a good commish because he was one the most active owners this season even though his team did not perform as well as he wanted. Lastly, if you are not a fan of Ottoneu or are not interested in being in the league anymore, please let me know so that we can find a new owner.
-
Once arbitration is finalized, teams will be able to make trades and cuts, but keep in mind the keeper deadline is 1/31/18 (I advise that you make your cuts closer to the keeper deadline just in case you are able to move a player or two that you planned to cut). After the keeper deadline, we will schedule an auction draft that works for everyone’s schedule (preferably a day in late March). If you have any questions about the off-season just let me know and I will do my best to answer them.
-
With the league’s inaugural off-season upon us, I just thought I would share the important dates with everyone. Arbitration starts on 10/15 and will last until 11/15. Please make sure you arbitrate because it helps the competitive balance of the league. Also, keep in mind that you will need to follow the guidelines for arbitration or else your arbitration values will not get processed.

Mithril Hall is allowed to bid on players he cut when he had cap free cuts... the reason he's allowed to cut those players is because he wasn't the one who added them.

Part 9. Conclusion. No one lost any points as a result of my adds and cuts of these players. The only team hurt by my failed attempts at price-enforcing is mine. I was aware of that risk, but its price – cap penalties – is one I was willing to pay. It is unfortunate that one owner views that practice as “garbage.” I hope my explanation helps allay those concerns. This is supposed to be fun. Defending oneself against baseless accusations of improper conduct is not fun. Please stop slingin
-
Part 8. Inefficiency. I can report that this method of price enforcement is very inefficient. I think it has worked one time so far, driving up the price on Nick Delmonico by $1. It has cost me $4 in cap penalties on three other players.
-
Part 7. Delay. DataSplit’s complaint about delay is off-base. It wasn't my goal to delay anyone’s acquisition of Sam Dyson, Zach Davies, or Jaime Garcia. Also, from a points perspective, there was no delay. Dyson didn’t pitch today. Davies started yesterday, so he couldn't pitch today. Garcia’s next scheduled start is 8/29. As others have pointed out, all of these players are on waivers for 24 hours, and available to anyone except me. Each can be added and activated before his next appea
-
Part 6. Summary. Again, the goal of bidding on guys I don’t want is to drive up the prices paid by other teams, so they have fewer dollars available for other players going forward. That is textbook, plain vanilla, price enforcement. What makes my implementation of it unusual is that sometimes I win the player, don’t want him, cut him immediately, and pay a cap penalty. I am willing to pay those cap penalties if and when I see no better way to use the dollars.
-
Part 5. Cap Space. My team this year has a ton of available cap space ($31 at the moment, but it was $40 a day or so ago) and zero chance to compete for the championship this year. I tried to make trades with outgoing loans, so I could get some future value out of those 2017 cap dollars, but that was largely unsuccessful. (Side note, DataSplit knows about this first-hand.)
-
Part 4. My Twist. Driving up prices paid by opponents is perfectly legitimate. That is precisely my goal. The only unusual thing is that I am in last place, so I will “win” every tie-breaker. When that happens, if I don’t want the player, I immediately cut him and pay the cap penalty. For most teams, most of the time, that penalty is an adequate disincentive.
-
Part 3. Price Enforcement. I bid on some players I did not want to own for one reason: price enforcement. This is a variation on a tactic that is widely used by first place teams, including Jacob's many times while he was in first place. In the typical tactic, the leader places a minimum bid on every auctioned player. That team can't win those players because the standings are the tie-breaker. No one objects, because we all understand that causing opponents to pay more is beneficial.
-
Part 2. On Collusion. I have not colluded with any other owner, nor are there any circumstances that create the incentive or opportunity for collusion between me and any other owner(s). I have been commissioner of my home league (non-Ottoneu) for 6 years and I take collusion very seriously. My rule for testing for collusion is to ask: In every transaction, was each owner motivated solely by a desire to help his/her own team? Here, I was so motivated. This was not collusion.
-
Part 1. Preliminary points. I don’t know any of the owners in this league outside the context of this league. I have never had advanced knowledge of or access to any non-public information about who started any auction (with the obvious exception of the ones I started). I have never communicated with any owner about any auction bid before or during the pendency of any auction, other than publicly visible chat room comments during the draft.
-
I'm going to place Grandal back onto north Correa's team because it was an accidental cut. This is not a common thing, however it is a new owner, he's making moves and I understand that accidental cuts will happen. It is in the otteneu guidelines that a replacement owner gets a free round of penalty free cuts. Therefore north Correa is entitled to this as an owner. This happened in my league last year and it did not affect the standings, it helps the competitive balance of the league.
-
Experienced commishes expressed concern of penalty free cuts in-season due to issues it would create. Can we get some thoughts from the commish and owners? Has anyone seen the result of this in other leagues?
-
Accidentally cut Grandal. Agh.
-
That is my point. It isn't logical for him to be doing this. He is helping those teams out while not benefiting his team.
-
I don't know the relationships of who G-Men knows exactly, but I do know he doesn't know Cup. And I have zero doubts about Jacob's integrity. So I think you're way off base here. (Paranoid even?) I mean, what exactly is the advantage of a last place team to do this ??

Yes, thus a delay. It is even worse for a P since they aren't used everyday. He isn't doing this to the bats.
-
It takes 24 hours to start a new auction for a player however once the player is cut he's on waivers and any team besides the team that cut the player can place a claim on him. And if someone claims that player they will receive him after the 24 hours he was cut.
-
24 hours is a start for a player. He certainly isn't intending to roster the players.
-
It would only be delayed by 24 hours, and G-Men's intent is not to delay the players usage. If you have problem with what G-Men is doing, then make a higher bid. And just a fair warning, I will be out of the country for the next week and might not be able to check Ottoneu as much as I want.
-
These auctions were not auctions that the G-Men started nor players on their payroll to reduce salaries. It is not the strategy you speak of Canseco Juice. This is a tactic to delay the availability to the roster and it is garbage. He is winning the bid just to re-cut and force another 24 to 48 hours on the clock.
