Added XB to by 'non-trade' block - not saying I won't move him, but I think people got the impression I was actively trying to offload him, which wasn't my intention.

Matt Carpenter potentially on the move with Davis 3B eligible; looking for SP or MI hitting; drop me a line and let me know if you're interested in getting into the mix
-
I have gotten a very intriguing offer for Harvey. I had no interest in trading him, but I'm willing to listen to the offers at this level. Let me know if interested.
-
I think this auction will have more talent than usual - so many teams so far over the cap. I think as things get more competitive though that won't always be the case.

I built a championship team almost entirely via the auction, but that was with the old arbitration system. There was a ton of talent in that draft with all the vote-offs.

With Votto, I was 98% sure that I could land him for under $55 at the auction. But I felt like Harvey/Nimmo was an appropriate price to pay for the certainty of owning a 1200-point-capable bat. At least I can now plan my auction around that, rather than wondering if Nick will cut him or if there will be a bidding war.

Jed's purchase of a $55 Votto for a couple of top 100 prospects might be the closest example this winter for a trade that resembles giving up very little for a chance to keep a player at peak value, but then again we've seen big contracts moved even in-season for the same price before, so maybe not. I continue to believe relying on the auction is the riskiest way to build a contending team, but that's just me.

Which is why, so far, it appears most buyers are giving up at least enough in the returns to suggest that these traded players are being kept. So far...

That's possible. The other side of this though is that if I'm selling a large contract there's no point in moving that player at all unless the return is something I would clearly keep. Likewise, if I'm buying a player I might not actually keep, why make another owner better by giving them a contract they clearly will keep? That's why I assumed Hanley would be kept (this example): why let Durham keep a player that could make him better if I get nothing in return for giving him Gausman?

I don't think anyone acquired yet will be cut, but I don't think you'll see too many other deals like that - in my opinion, guys are filling certain holes and with guys still at prices lower than auction likely would yield. I think as we get closer to deadline though less of these guys will change hands, and those that do will come at significantly lower prices as guys start to face the option of taking less or cutting and getting nothing.
Caimans ð on
November 30, 2014 8:19 AM

Those guys could clearly be expendable by the teams giving them up, but some of these examples seem to run counter to the earlier off-season call to not give up anything of value for high price players who are most likely to be cut by overloaded teams. So far, it seems teams are realizing that there will be much less talent available in the draft than first anticipated, and it may be worthwhile to pay decent value to get those players before everyone bids them up...

Paying Gausman+ for a player you may cut doesn't seem like much of a discount; neither does paying guys like Dozier, Aex Gordon, and even a couple of top 100 prospects for Joey Votto.

EP's point about buying a player just for the chance to keep or cut is well taken; probably a very valid strategy to acquire a guy even if the only purpose is to keep him away from others until the draft. I guess my only counter in this case is that that doesn't appear to be the strategy in play so far because in many cases the team acquiring the high salary contract is still giving up solid value for those players. I don't see a ton of discounts, at least in my opinion.

Also don't see too many other top contracts changing hands at current prices.

Agree with Enrico - I'll likely keep Hanley, but the trade was more about guaranteeing he's either on my team or at auction.

Sometimes it's nice to have a few months to make a decision on a player
-
To ensure I'm not accused of innuendo or whatever else, I will clearly state that'll disagree entirely with the previous comment that trades in November make it likely that overpriced vets won't be cut in late January; I can't speak for other owners but over the years I have often traded for guys that I intended to or thought likely would be cuts months later
-
With at least 10 players $30+ already traded this winter, it's looking less and less likely that all those obvious cuts are actually going to be available in the auction. Lots of big contracts changing hands recently...

I'm actually toying with the idea of keeping Carlos Rodon. Didn't think that was even a remote possibility two weeks ago. But it sounds like he is either going to be a 5th starter or a closer next year. Not that that in itself is worth $19, but 2015 usefulness plus ace potential...I might end up biting the bullet on his 2015 salary.

I'm still carrying a lot of MiLB or borderline MLB players. Would love to convert guys like Rodon, Schwarber, Taylor, Herrera, Franco into more serviceable veterans, even if they are platoon-ish. Franco would be the highest-price guy of that bunch, but not expensive.

I appreciate and agree with the concept that people should make their best attempt to respond quickly but on the other hand it's November and the cut deadline is forever away and the season even further. I choose to be constantly engaged because I enjoy it but the expectation that everyone has nothing better to do than to remain in constant contact during the offeseason isn't reasonable to me.
-
Speaking of engagement, I have a few pretty good offers for Baez on the table. Trying to evaluate them against each other.

To be more clear, now almost five years in I think there's enough evidence to say there's nearly a direct correlation between engagement level and success in this league. If you aren't quickly and consistently responding to emails, offers, and regularly signaling a willingness to improve your team simply by updating your OTB, etc., you probably aren't going to see success in a league where the format demands it. I appreciate the majority of owners who can ignore this comment completely...

E.P. and I don't always see eye to eye, but I sincerely respect the fact that he responds quickly and is clearly engaged. Some owners should take note...

If you initiate a trade or player discussion and then fail to respond to any formal trade offer or email for the next 48 hours, there is a good chance you won't be successful in an active, deep, daily fantasy format like Ottoneu. Some owners need to keep that in mind as we enter 2015. Being competitive year in and year out isn't a requirement, but being responsive is. Not sure if it's the "default" effect (https://db.tt/wYrDCkgj) at work, but engagement is a year round commitment.
