Thank you, Santa, for putting real players in my roster organizer who were not free agents 12 months ago.

I am definitely most excited about #2

What I see on that list is some genuinely overpriced players, but also some clearly UNDERpriced players who just happen to be cheaper in other ottoneu leagues.

Right, it's kind of like ADP. It's a bunch of numbers that are influenced by hundreds of not-savvy owners. This chart is telling me that E5, Lucroy, Arrieta, Richards are all bad values. I think what this really indicates is that strong leagues like ours inflate contracts of high-upside players through auctions and arbitration, whereas in other leagues people will sleep on FA auctions, allocated arbitration $$ stupidly, etc.

Amazing that a $13 Prado in a team that needs to cut $160 can return anything.
-
And on the other end of the spectrum, Carlos Gonzalez and Allen Craig would be my most valuable -- also not consistent with what the market is telling me
-
Also you're taking the discussion far afield from where it was -- merely pointing out that the surplus value spreadsheet doesn't help much at this unique pre- cut down pre- auction period. Using my roster as an example, the spreadsheet would indicate Devin Mesoraco and Jon a Lester are among my least valuable assets; market activity indicates otherwise
-
Actually the most recent research indicates quite the contrary, elite hitting prospects don't bust at alarming rates. For instance http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/updating-prospect-valuations/
-
Here's another real life example: Wil Myers, 2012 BA Player of the Year, was just traded for what could be a 4th OF after being traded for Shields/Davis the year before. Even the best prospects fail at alarming rates (or at least don't peak quick enough to pay back some of the hype inflation that takes place in our league).

It's a single example in time, but I'm happy to paint with a broad brush and say that it is beyond rare to pay $20+ for a player without a single MLB AB and come out with a surplus, especially in a year in which you plan to compete

If I remember correctly, you weren't too far behind that final bid price maybe at $22 or so. Sure he didnt pan out and I didn't do well, but that is no reason to look at that example as the standard for justifying your models
-
WGW bought Xander for $30 out of the gate earlier this year in another league I was in...ð

Adding Bryant for $25 at the 2015 auction is also ridiculous...
TTBNL on
December 20, 2014 12:14 AM

A guy like Bryant is owned in 93% of leagues for about $10. Unless there are way more new leagues than I expect every year, I don't think a handful of leagues that add him at $25 are going to move the needle past $18. Could be wrong if Ottoneu is growing much faster than I think it is. I can't imagine too many leagues where Bryant is cut at the deadline

Yea, that's a pretty ridiculous thing to say Strikes - how would an auction period where those players are added at today's prices NOT impact those numbers, potentially drastically?

The cut deadline and auction will wildly change them I agree w Knights right the numbers don't mean too much
-
The auction won't have any impact on those surplus values. But as soon as the season starts anything can happen.

I supposedly have negative value in guys like Kris Bryant, Anthony Rizzo and Carlos Carrasco - I bet those numbers will look different soon.

I think average and 'surplus' values will mean a lot more after the auction.

Been a while since we looked at "surplus" value as defined by average values in Ottoneu. Only three teams in the green, which is a bit surprising https://db.tt/jvJbaFgl

I have no idea which is better. Hard to give up on Gray's GB-heavy profile, home park, and proven ability to throw 200+ innings but I just love deGrom.
-
I could see both pitchers surpassing 1,000 points next year. Who outscores whom will be a toss-up, I feel like.

Yeah I can say that I waffled on that swap quite a bit, but mostly b/c I am a Mets fan. DeGrom has a low-ish GB% and a low-ish HR/FB. Gray's second-half GB% was the kicker for me.

I'd take Gray 10 out of 10 times over DeGrom in Ottoneu. Steamer looks very reasonable to me for both. DeGrom is very good, but benefited from a 0.27 HR/FB ratio during a dominant 2nd half. I just like Gray's chances of suppressing the HR better until we see DeGrom do it for longer. DeGrom may have better pure "stuff" though so this just comes down to personal preference.

By my count FMW is narrowly leading ($18) E.P. ($16) and WAR ($11) in trading away arbitration allocations this winter. FMW has actually traded 4 of the 5 players that received arb $ on his team...

Piggybacking just allows you to fold different discussions into one joint roster decision. Could've been done a day or two apart, but the bang-bang acceptance is just a reflection of me treating them in my head as one giant trade instead of two.
