Just an FYI for anyone that might be interested- there is a growing Ottoneu community on Slack where owners can discuss strategy, players, trades, etc. Just post a comment at the following blog post to request an invite if you’d like to join: https://ottoneutraderumors.wordpress.com/2015/01/08/ottoneucommunity-on-slack-com/.

I understand the concept that you can't get something for nothing, but this is fantasy baseball. If you want to make it an even trade, go out and buy The Bryce Is Right a case of beer and call it even.
-
That's fine, I understand everyone's points, and obviously I agree that the veto function is what will determine this and future deals. I just wanted to point out that it's not a "trade," since there's no two-way transfer. But we're playing by ottoneu rules, not MLB rules, and our constitution doesn't prohibit it.
-
the way i see it he is exchanging a roster spot. but there is no option other than group regulation. I am not going to become a trade czar, nor am I going to make someone give someone else $1 just to exchange a player, if they are willing to do it for free.

And then when you add the fact that Mercer was a player I was definitely willing to hold, as opposed to potentially dropping and taking a penalty I'm not sure I see any issue. Again to me it's all about looking at each trade individually and taking it in context.

He was on the trade block for a more than reasonable period of time so the complaint of the whole league not getting a say seems a bit odd. And who's to say I didn't already sniff out the majority of the trade market. There is no "precedent" being set here, the veto function is set up for this purpose a case by case review of each trade.

RE: Yu - That's what the veto is for. The rest of the league gets to decide what is fair. The league decides if a player like Mercer can me traded for strictly salary relief. I honestly was split on accepting, but there was no guaranty Bryce was going to cut Mercer. I was willing to assume his $3 contact and his exclusive rights versus attempting to put him up for $2 at auction and risk someone else bidding $2 or more.
-
The biggest issue, though, is that MLB rules specify that trades involve a TRANSFER of some kind. Nothing's being transferred here, making it an unfair way to avoid the waiver rules and procedures.
-
Right, Bucs, but that's my problem with it: it sets a really dicey precedent. Who gets to decide who the "decent" players are? Essentially Bryce is waiving Mercer but without giving the entire league a chance to pick him up. I find that hugely problematic and against the entire idea of waivers and the salary cap.
-
I don't have a problem with trading a player for nothing as long its not a high quality player like Bryce Harper for nothing. Jordy Mercer is a decent player, but he's not going to make a huge impact within the league.
-
to me if he can find someone to take the player then more power to him. I personally have no problem with it. I only veto a trade if its obvious collusion or if i believe the trade will effect the balance of the league due to someone realizing they are out of the running. but i believe each player is open to his own interpretation in terms of vetoing.

Maybe I'm slightly biased here... but isn't the point of a trade to benefit both sides? In this case it's a player that has been listed on the Trade Block for over a week not like it's the case of a player nobody new was available. One team gets a potentially useful piece and the other gets an open roster spot and cap relief with no penalty. Not sure how this can be looked at negatively, unless there is a feeling that the trade involves collusion.

Hey, I don't think this proposed trade impacts too much, but are we really trading players for NOTHING? That's very different than waiving a player you don't want and still having to take a salary cap hit. Just curious what the league thinks.
-
No problem, Bantasy. I understand format preferences... Two slots still open for anyone interested. 5x5 vote off, draft on Tuesday at 8p eastern. League is "$100 Old School Hardball."

Bantasy I'd be interested in doing another league with this same setup. Sorry Yu, I'm just not sure I'd have the time to do two different formats. Let me know Bantasy
