It’s not gonna blow over Mikey—it’s gonna get a lot worse. If we see baseball this summer or fall it’s gonna be some weird game played in empty stadiums. You’ll be even happier to have a distraction in late May or June.

Bats, perhaps you have some good points there. You may have swayed me in your direction. Perhaps we should forego the pleasure of having a fun distraction during our isolation this weekend and instead wait until it’s all blown over and we no longer need entertainment. Hmmm... Naw, this weekend is good.
-
Me too actually. I thought the most interesting thing in those absinthe links was the suggestion that “vermouth” comes from the German word for wormwood. I was drinking a martini at the time so I checked my bottle of Dolin...no sign of any of the ingredients.

I'm going to drink more gin.

What, Brew, you prefer to hold on to your myths? And even spread them...at the expense of the American absinthe industry during these critical times? I’m starting to wonder if you’re real or a product of the Russian troll farms. They’re everywhere...and while I do have a single bottle of Fred’s home brew in my fridge, it’s a Russian imperial stout....

Pat, did you miss a meal today ?
-
Fake news. There’s wormwood in American absinthe too. The first couple things that came up: http://bitbyafox.com/absinthe-now-legal-for-ten-years-in-the-us/ and http://www.mutineermagazine.com/blog/2010/10/is-the-absinthe-that-is-now-legal-in-the-u-s-real-absinthe/ . The chloroquine will probably be more fun (though honestly the only side effect I ever had was possibly more vivid dreams).

I'll try European Absinthe with wormwood at this point
-
Chloroquine? That was our antimalarial/hallucinogen of choice as peace corps volunteers in west Africa in the 1980s. Of course we only took it 1x/week. Could get interesting when 40% of the country is taking it every day.

I don’t want to sound like I’m arguing since I’ve promised not to. But I do want to note that we explicitly decided not to draft in February, and I don’t think we’re facing “only a little” uncertainty this year (but that’s specific to this year).

To me, you are making an argument for always drafting the day before the opener. I would probably rather draft a week after the cut date.
-
I missed the "real skill" part. I think the real skill in this game is based around managing uncertainty and making better predictions than other players. And playing time expectations are a large part of that.
-
Only a little. And just around injuries. It's no different than drafting in February, really.
-
...disadvanting real skill. Now, maybe I should be all for increasing the role of luck in the game, but I want the best players to win. I don’t really understand why those of you I consider the best players don’t share this view. We obviously can’t get rid of all luck in the game, but we don’t need to go out of our way to increase it. Let’s draft sometime near the actual start of the season! Now I’m finally done, thanks for indulging me.

Man, I hate feeling like I let Mikey down by giving up too easily, so I’ll make one last (I promise!) pitch. Even if you think (or at least hope) there will be baseball in 2 months, it still doesn’t make sense to draft now. We play for money—not a lot, sure (not nearly as much as even Mittens wants to send each of us), but more than the token $5 friends league. So we should play at least somewhat seriously. Drafting months ahead of the season just adds randomness and uncertainty...

Yes, back on for Sunday at 7:00 eastern.
-
I’m in for Sunday 7:00
-
So we are all set for this Sunday, correct?
-
i would be fine for tonght , not like i can be out drinking black and tans and eating shepards pie
-
I don't see how we could auction tonight, but in the absence of more than one objection we are still on track for Sunday at 7 eastern.
-
in liue of all the recnt events, I think we could all use a few hours of distraction
-
Our draft worked well on a Wednesday at 9 est. Took less than two hours and broke up.the week nicely.
-
I'm indifferent. But can't draft earlier than 9 pm EDT (5 pm AKDT) M-F.
-
I do see Patrick's side of the discussion. A lot can happen to players between now and opening day. Investing now in a player who might go 4wheeling and break their finger now that they have down time could ruin your plans
-
It’s the Trump years Mikey, and I live in the south. I’m used to being surrounded by people who pretend the world is entirely different than reality. Life is easier when you don’t fight them that much. Plus, who can argue with Christmas?

Mikey, not to make light of it—especially as the only one of us (I think) who is over 60, who also takes a couple drugs a day to try to control chronic asthma—but that seems like a reason to draft later.

Mikey, if you get fatally sick, we'll draft in your honor and add your roster to your obituary
-
I’ve known Bats for 25 years, and I’m not sure I’ve ever seen him concede like that. Bats, have you taken your temperature recently?
-
Yeah, I don’t understand you guys, but I do seem to be alone in my crusade. I concede.

But I don't see a real groundswell for pushing the draft out till July. Or even a second person in favor. I'm still leaning towards Sunday unless someone can't make it.
-
7 Eastern means weekend for me. I can't do any earlier than 8 eastern on a weeknight.
-
I’m pretty much okay with anything from now through Sunday, but absolutely want to draft sooner rather than later. I want to know what I have before I possibly get fatally sick and risk not Even making it to the draft (and be able to make trades).
-
Are you in China, Cotton? Hard to imagine anywhere that’ll be less locked down next week.

Any time between now and Sunday works for me. Next week is a bit dicier.

Wednesday July 1 would work, not long before the 7/4 opening day! Seriously, I don’t care much about day of the week, but much prefer 7 edt over 9 edt.

I dont think I'm alone in preferring a week night
-
It went fast and orderly
-
What's wrong with Wednesday night at 9 est? That's when we had other draft
-
Maybe we should do a draft every week until the season starts.
-
Isn’t the anticipation the best part?

To be honest, I don't know why draft isn't tonight at 8 pm cst
-
I mass prepared and its fresh in my mind, dont want to have to re familiarize
-
I'm.for drafting Sunday as the draft would have already been over
-
Sadly, there are things we could learn. And even leaving aside the macabre, Ps can’t take 2 months off then throw 5 or 6 innings. Maybe June is a month of “summer training” for a July start of the season, or maybe the league decides to work through this in real games, and every game has some version of an opener. I’d like to have some idea. I don’t see what we gain by drafting now, then sitting around for the next couple months. Any way to make trades possible before we draft?

I'm fine either way. Early or later in the year probably makes zero difference in my chances :)
-
I am open to waiting until closer to the season (mid June?), but without exhibition games it's not as if we are learning anything either. Sunday was the first suggestion, but if you can rally support for waiting, then lets wait.
-
Yeah, we’ve seen 2 trades in Capped after the auction. This seems like an imaginary benefit.

To answer Bat: so we can trade. Though really, there is never a ton of action before the season starts.
