I could move Mike Napoli ($1), Josh Harrison ($8), Adam Jones ($26), Kevin Pillar ($3), Jake Odorizzi ($8), Robbie Ray ($2), Jimmy Nelson ($3). Not willing to take on more players than I give away.

So I could see .280/.340/.480, which makes him better than last year's Adrian Beltre.
-
The other thing about Gurriel is that he played in NPB, giving us a much better feel for his baseline than other Cuban emigrees. He raked in Japan, but not at his Cuban levels. So extrapolating from that, I think Ben Badler's projection might actually be a tad low, even taking aging into account. There's also the Crawford Boxes.
-
No. I'm just an asshole :)
-
It was a masterful roster reorganization. Don't forget though, for him to pay $32, someone else bid $31. So he's not alone.

lol precedent strongly suggests otherwise
-
Certainly, you could have. But part of making strategic cuts is cutting filler which you know *will* be picked up, or is too valuable not to be.
-
I might be blind, but where's the link to this article?
-
Yeah, just saying we claimed a bunch of your players. You made good cuts, but we definitely could have left one or two of your cuts remain free agents.
-
GURRIEL IS UNTRADEABLE I WILL NEVER TRADE HIM
-
I predict Albert Pujols Butthole takes Gurriel off your hands by the deadling, or within first week of trades next season.. if you're willing, of course --
-
Well, I did make all of the necessary cuts, did I not?
-
Frankly, we made it too easy on you.
-
That too. :D
-
I just assumed you needed the ultimate roster tinkering challenge—that you were bored in last place!
-
Plus, I will have a ton of cap room for next year. So best case scenario, I get an Abreu clone at fair market value, and I keep him. Worst case scenario, I wasted $32 and a bunch of roster filler in a year I was never going to compete. I think there's really no downside, because no one on the wwaiver wire has Gurriel's upside.
Just my thinking. But I STILL feel famous Coastal, and you can't take that away from me.
You may all now go back to snickering at my obscene overpay.
-
Good article though. But since it was brought up, and now the whole payroll cap kerfuffle will be moot as of this evening when May's auction is over, I might as well explain my reasoning. Elite bats are a scarce resource, and so rare that it's actually worth overpaying. People thought $32 was insane for Abreu, until he proved it wasn't. Now, odds are that Gurriel isn't Abreu. But I'm in last place with no shot at landing an impact hitter until the offseason.
-
Yeah, but it lacks your insight on the bid and just works on theory.
-
Wow a whole post is written on my Gurriel bid. I feel famous.
-
Joe Buck Yourself's trade block has been updated!
-
No worries. I just want to make sure about roster *spots*...I will have 41 full of 43, but I only have to have money up to 40, so I'm good, right? Controversy over? Everyone can go back to beating me until I win next year?
-
Ahh my bad man, you are correct
-
Fielder isn't on my books, or Field's books, because he was picked up later.
-
I just did, same section. I've been playing ottoneu for years, and every time a player is auctioned, he no longer counts against the previous team's cap. Take Prince Fielder this year, for example.
-
e. If a player passes through waivers, 50% of his salary, rounding up, counts against his previous team's salary cap as a cap penalty, until he is claimed by another team or until the end of the current season. Any bids for him as a free agent must be at least 50% of his previous salary.
-
Read the league rules man, everything is clearly there: d. When a player is dropped, other team owners have 24 hours to claim him on waivers for 100% of his salary, with the team lowest in the standings getting priority. If the regular season has not begun yet, a coin flip will determine who is awarded the player
-
No, May's salary is gone from my books as soon as his auction is over, I thought.
-
No. Nobody claimed him on waivers, so you're still on the hook for cutting him. For example, Duda was claimed while on waivers so his cap penalty got negated for you.
