Which, I hope, is an end goal that everyone in this league would like to see. The more competitive teams between, say, 3 through 9, the better.
-
Mug: My proposal only tracks two things: points scored & loans taken in. Both are super easy to find (loans taken in are on each team's roster page). The entire goal of my proposal's to prevent runaway teams at the top taking in rampant loans. Teams will still trade- in fact, trading should go up as more teams are within reach of the top of the standings.
-
Yeah plus the loans thing seems like itd be a pain to track and enforce. Just go with arb coupons simple and effective.
-
I think I agree with Fake History about capping loans, although it's hard to know how it all shakes out until we actually go through it for a season. I would worry that this rule would stymie trades. Maybe we could do a higher limit??

I think I'd be against capping loans you send out because for teams that are trying to rebuild, being able to offset salary is a key way of increasing the quality of the return you're trying to get.
-
So, arbitration coupons scaling up to the first place team with penalties based on loans. Then progressive loan limits, no more than $25 on opening day and no more than $50 on 6/1?

Yeah, I like Fake History's proposal. I'd like to add one provision: Teams must be within a $25 cap of $400 on opening day (you don't need $375 of salary, but just you aren't more than -25 in loans sent out via trades) and within $50 on June 1 as a limit to doing a fire sale too early.

I really like the coupon system. I'm a big fan of the system that Fake History posted, but I like the point scaling of the model Mugwumps posted. Incentive not to be at the bottom of the stack, but not giving the biggest advantage to the first place team. Anyone else have an opinion on this?

Arb coupons MUST be before regular arbitration so the market (i.e. the other 11 owners) has the opportunity to try to correct undervalued salaries.
-
Interesting...seems like two different concepts based on who gets the coupons. I kind of like the idea of bringing up the middle, as it were, instead of giving more coupons to the top finishers. And the idea of redeeming coupons BEFORE arbitration is nice. In both systems it's not clear if you have to use all your coupons for that particular year's arb, or can you carryover to the following year.

I'm in another league (and I'm getting another to adopt this as well) and we roll with an arb coupon system plus a loans tax system. It has been very successful in keeping owners engaged and it's also prevented teams from ballooning their rosters to super high dollar amounts. You can see it here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1la-vq_bawyYhgeu92L8zOWOIovvPzzyb2wD1hzZq0dU/edit#gid=0

Slow work day and was considering something that was brought up last year, specifically incentives/sticks for teams that are out of the race for first place.
One idea I've read about that looks like it would be pretty easy to put in place and track is an arbitration coupon system. You can read more about it from another league - https://docs.google.com/document/d/1scAhW8W0-y8iXzRY5mBDbyjj_9_YWZgWxqWRmZkk3Mk/edit
Basically you get discount dollars for arb raises depending on where you finish.

It'll be interesting to see how Albert Pujols Butthole does this year without the secret commish menu. Certainly not that Coastal Empire needed any extra help.
