Hey everybody. Very excited to be back. Let's make some deals baby.
-
Welcome back, CP and Shrews!
-
WELCOME BACK DAWGS - I'm glad you both have realized life is better with a little Sabo Redux in it haha
-
Well hi everyone...nice to be back, hope everyone is well. Changed my team name to simply "Shrewsbury's Team" for the time being and will figure something else out later. Thanks for having me back!

Sweet! Welcome back you two!
-
So I wanted to make sure everyone was aware, but I think I pretty much asked most. Bax and Nick told me there were not playing this year. Ben had suggested Christian and I think some others told me he wanted back and same for Shrews. No one seemed opposed and everyone thought this to be a good idea, so I made it official and added them this morning so they will be able to start Arb in a few days.

I was busy last night but tried to post the H2H voting results. I hadn't realized till later on that other posts were happening so I wanted to make sure I made everyone aware. The results ended up being 7-4. Standifer (2020 or bust) had told me and texted me his vote due to him being out of town for fall break, and his vote was "No". Just wanted share again that I will not switch the league to H2H.

To be clear, I’m not saying the problem would be completely fixed in H2H. Just not as bad.
-
Sorry bax I forgot about that. I just grabbed the post draft transactions
-
its all good. I mean I know its not a requirement. But trades are fun. There aint no arguing that lol
-
In fantasy football I make no trades and do limited free agent adds. What is fun is playing the match ups and drafting and I am consistently top 3 in fantasy football. Anyway, just my two cents.

Bax chose to play it that way. It isn't a requirement to make trades and there isn't a minimum number of free agent pick-ups required. Also it was his first year. I've been in this league since inception and I don't correlate making trades with fun. I've made a small number of deals as well as some free agent pick-ups (and maybe I'm just not good at fantasy baseball) but we all have our own strategy and it doesn't make sense to me that making trades and pick ups is the fun in it.

That is incorrect. I made a trade with Ben before the season. Late January I believe.
-
I ran a spreadsheet of all the transactions in the league this year and filtered it by transaction type and owner. We had someone in this league only had 7 add transactions the whole year and did 0 trades (COUGH BAX COUGH lol) - I get why this league would be boring and you would want to change it up. I would hate this league if I could only add 7 players and do zero trades lol
-
I get if it's not fun then we can replace with someone who would enjoy- as I said I'd be happy to start a second H2H league at least and play with you there.
-
I think Sawyer is the only one who didnt but even if he did the it's still a majority No

So I think have all the votes. By my count it is 7 to 4 in favor of No. So we will not switch to H2H.

And I’m a firm no on buy-ins and payouts.
-
I vote no on H2H, but it won’t hurt my feelings if we switch.
-
I vote yes to H2H. But I also like all of those things Jodie mentioned to get more monetary incentives in the league. I also like themed names.
-
new blood. I am planning on not playing next year unless the format is changed. It's become more hassle than fun for me and I'm perfectly okay with allowing a new person the chance to get involved.

But again it goes back to the same conversation and the fundamental point is that the teams that are successful and find it interesting are the ones that succeed. Well, sure, if I like something of course I'm likely to be more successful at it. But that's my point here. If you keep it the same, the better get better and the bottom 6 don't care enough to get better. I understand I am generalizing with the bottom 6 but if you want 6 more people that are fully engaged and interested you need

The teams who are against changing format are teams that historically haven't found it boring and have enjoyed it throughout- and it's reflected their successful results. I put together this spreadsheet to show long-term historical results: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1a7h0B9FAlI_keVBALohSbZkF15qBO3cQt0Nxq8XCOB0/edit?usp=sharing
-
I meant to say I don't think everyone has to play both.
-
I understand that for some people H2H format is preferred- for me I couldn't feel more different and that's okay. When I suggested a second H2H league, I didn't mean everyone had to play it. If you prefer an H2H format, I'm saying why don't we create a separate league for that, rather than disrupting a multi-year dynasty league. My favorite year of Ottoneu was my least successful one because I was focused on transactions to offset the years loss with long-term gains. Was really fun.
-
If the majority of teams in this league believe that the activity level is low then you only have two options. Replace the managers/league managers or change the format to encourage engagement. Continuing with the same format is going to breed the same results.

spot rather than either winning or being in the next 11 spots. I am voting for head to head and if it crashes and burns then we can always reevaluate. I am not for a second league that is head to head. Way too much to keep up with and if you think the activity level on here is down now then just wait until 2 leagues aren't kept up with. Overall, fantasy sports will always have the same problem which is people keeping up with their teams.

I would argue that it is hard to kill the competitiveness of the league when the only people competing come Summer time are the top 1-5 teams. I also disagree that people won't check their team with H2H vs. the current format. DK is right in that you can make a run even if you lose the first several weeks. The reason fantasy football is so much more fun than this is because of the head to head weekly matchups and the playoff system. It's much more engaging to try and make the top 6 for a playoff

I have absolutely zero confidence that everyone will set their weekly lineups every week for the entire year. There WILL be a lot of free wins given out due to inactivity and that hurts everyone and kills competitiveness. Dynasty leagues are about building something over multiple seasons, so honestly if you are behind by 2000 points mid season, then yeah there isn't anything you can do to win that year, and that's how it should be. You then make moves for the years to come.
-
I vote no

That said, Ottoneu is an interesting enough platform to sustain interest without H2H. So if we decide not to do it, that's fine. But, generally, I'm in favor of moves that make the league more fun, even at the expense of making it less fair or accurately determinative of the best team. I think H2H does this, and that the pros outweigh the cons.
-
Finally, and this really a point against your alls points, it seems just wrong that 2-start streaming now means that H2H "is not at all reflective of who is actually good." 2-start streaming is just another strategy, and a relatively small one at that, for constructing a winning team. Even if it introduces more randomness, the best team will normally win. It also seems wrong to say that "if you don't check your team now, you won't in H2H" for the reasons I've outlined above.
-
Second, H2H encourages continued involvement (in a way this construction can't) in at least two ways. First, by making it more competitive. By which I mean that I'm competing against a friend (or friend of a friend) every week who, for no other reason than pride, it would be fun to beat. Second, being "out of it" is much harder, since even falling behind early could be fixed by rattling off a few wins. It would make a more competitive stretch run, for sure.
-
First, despite assertions to the contrary, this league as currently constructed is just not all that interesting when it's June and you're 1,000 or even 2,000 points behind. Sure, you *could* comeback (though you almost certainly won't) and you can do *something* (check waivers, make trades), but there's almost no incentive to set your lineup daily and what you can do is relatively limited.
-
I'm certainly fine with keeping it the way that it is, although my vote would be to do H2H. I'm not interested in starting a 2nd league. But a couple of quick points in favor of H2H:
-
I vote no H2H

I vote yes to Head to Head.
-
I would be willing to do a 2nd league head to head to try it if a few people would rather switch to that, but I have a hard time believing people who don't keep up with their team through the year when we have 1 league would keep up with both their teams when we have 2 lol The thing about these keeper leagues is its not like you are done when you aren't going to win in the current year. The fact is, if you don't keep up with your team when out of contention you won't contend the next year.

I have not been ignoring the H2H talk, just trying to brainstorm. I know there are people who like it and people who don't. If a majority of the league don't want it, I can't justify going to it. As of right now I think I have 7 votes to keep it the way it is. But if we want to get an official tally, lets start an official vote now. Just post on here or email/message me.

We could always try it out by starting a second H2H league and people who prefer that could do that league instead.
-
I am against head to head. H2H is highly dependent on things like number of starts during the weekly time period. So you start rewarding 2 start streaming which is not at all reflective of who is actually good. It works for fantasy football but that's because everyone but a couple teams plays the same every week.
-
Derek Finished 34 overall in all Fg Pts leagues. Not too shabby Just thought I threw this out there.

I think trying head to head would be worth it. It’ll make teams be more attentive and still the better teams should win.
-
if we try the head to head matchups, Could we not go back to how it currently is the following year if we didn’t like it? Personally I think I would be much more motivated to keeping up with my team the whole year if it was head to head. But then again I might not speak for the majority of the league.

I'm in favor of a buy-in, it's a good way to find out who is playing to compete and who is not, it doesn't have to be much. We could do small incentives like monthly awards to whoever scores the most points if we're concerned about excitement.
-
That's a good point, KP, that I hadn't fully considered. Like if in the last month of the season Andrew played someone not checking their team, and I played someone who was.
I do think, however, head-to-head, even when you're eliminated, gives you more reason to check your team because it's fun to beat your friends at things. But, because of the point you brought up, I do think we'd need to require everyone to give their word that they are fully committed to trying all year.
-
But I'm in favor of finding ways to make it more fun year round for everyone. It is sad when you are out of contention and your players do good and it doesn't really do anything for you lol
