One of my primary issues with the Ottoneu structure is that the lack of incentive for most teams to continue participating as the year goes on creates a very high level of freely available talent, which along with having far more sellers than buyers, helps suppress trade value, and leads to super teams being built through mid-season trades. Having monthly incentives for everyone could significantly reduce the annual sell-offs we've seen. Thoughts and feedback appreciated.
-
The hope would be that these monthly challenges would create some incentive to continue participating in the league even once it becomes clear you might not win the season title in a given year. Having more engaged and active owners throughout the year does a lot of good things for the league, including changing the replacement level by ensuring quality players don't sit in FA simply because they won't be keepers for the next season.
-
Depending on the interest level in creating additional mini-games within the season, we could make the rewards somewhat minimal (maybe teams reaching a certain threshold get to void out a cap penalty and free up FA money for the remainder of the year?) or make them pretty significant (basing arbitration allocations, both for you to use and to be used against your taem, on reaching certain monthly goals, for instance).
-
As we head towards the finish of the 2017 season, I've continued to contemplate adjustments we could make to make the league a bit more active and competitive next year. Another idea I've considered, and would like the league's feedback on, would be to add a monthly contest to the current season-long competition. The full-season points race would still be the main prize, but we would also have rewards available to b earned based on your team's performance for each of the six months of the year.

Reports are coming in that Donaldson could play short for the rest of the season so ... wow. And only two games left to go! Gotta love positional rules!
-
Well the view from the top was fun while it lasted. It looks like Ben doesn't really need SP after all.
-
Oh man, please let this Josh Donaldson-at-SS experiment last four more games...

FYI still open to dealing one of my big bats. Ideally looking for 2018 contributors. 1-2 good players more appealing than 5 decent ones.

So I think I like ottoneu more when Ben scores less daily points than I do.

I was so certain I was going to win that Semien auction! Bummer.

I have not made mine either.

speaking of donations, i think there was mention of a care bridge at some point. did that ever get established? i have not made my annual donation yet

I kind of like the idea in theory, but it practice I would have two concerns: 1) there is an implication that screw cancer 1 is better to be in than screw cancer 2 and 2) would screw cancer 2 have a bunch of pros sign up that eventually relegate all of us schmoes
-
There might be some mid-table mischief by it would keep teams on both ends of the standings engaged and it would be exciting to the end. We also wouldn't have to do anything unnatural/weird with the ottoneu rules.
-
At the end of next year, the top two owners in screw 2 swap places with the bottom 2 in screw 1.
-
Here is an idea re: imbalanced trades. We borrow a page from football and introduce promotion and relegation. Over the off-season, twelve owners donate to a cancer charity and form "screw cancer 2."
-
I still believe in Schwarber long term but have completely lost patience with him. He is available. If no takers I'll decide what to do with him in the off season.

Nearly 5 years ago to the day I traded a $26 Mike Trout for a package that included Cespedes and two prospects W. Myers and J. Gyorko. I thought I had outsmarted my trade partner. Man was I wrong. Today I'd like to welcome the Melville Meteor back to his original home!

Not a good start to 2nd half. Montgomery did not have a carrot next to his name. No way I start him against the Sox had I been paying attention. I am protesting it with the Commissioner 🤓

Congratulations Greendale!!

Hey, everyone! This league's next generation got one person bigger on Wednesday when my wife and I welcomed our second daughter Amy Kathleen to the world! Born by c-section because she was breach, she was 7 lbs 10 oz, ~20 in long (but length is hard to check in breach kids, I guess). We came home yesterday, and everyone's doing great!

As a note to the league: the Lincecum/Gedman trade from a few weeks back has been modified to include David Peralta also going to Gedman. This was offered by Lincecum to help maintain a competitive finish. I appreciate the cooperation of all parties.

With Aledmys Diaz optioned, I now have 15 roster spots dedicated to guys who aren't on active MLB rosters. That seems less than ideal.
-
Yes. You've Been Friedman'd's owner plays in a league with this kind of structure. He can speak more about how well it's worked in that league, though there are some extra add-ons (such as a dedicated minor league roster) that also play in to how that league has adjusted Ottoneu's rules to their own liking.
-
I like the concept, Dave. Has it been instituted anywhere?
-
This would also serve to raise the baseline price for what a seller would ask for in trade, since it would no longer be "keep this guy and get nothing or trade him for whatever I'm offered", since keeping even good overpriced players could help you get arbitration savings for other players. So by giving owners a reason to keep their best players, acquisition prices for rentals would also go up.
-
In that discussion, one idea i put forward was the ability to earn rebates off the arbitration allocations you were assigned over the winter. So, for instance, either depending on points scored or place finished, you could reduce the amount of future salary you had to carry over to next year by getting an offset to reduce some of the arbitration raises you were assigned. This would give teams a tangible financial reward for the future for keeping their teams together and not selling.
-
A few years ago, we had a similar discussion in another league, the transcripts of which I'd encourage you to read here if you're interested in the discussion. https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B0fEKZ6sGtJkbGw1ZWtaT3FjcEk/view

As a biased guy with an economics degree, I always lean towards incentive-based systems. And I do think there are ways we could structure things to help people want to push for 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, or 6th place, even if they didn't think they had a real chance of winning. And if we had more teams buying, we'd eliminate the too-cheap trades we often see when there are 10 sellers and 1 or 2 buyers.
-
In terms of changing trade dynamics in our league, there are essentially two approaches: limits/prohibitions or incentives. Most of the rules changes I've seen attempted or suggested (a cap on loans being the most popular) actually serve to hurt rebuilding teams, since it restricts their ability to move valuable pieces to contenders for future assets, thus perpetuating their losing cycle. So while I'm open to hearing ideas of that nature, I'm generally inclined against trade restrictions.

I'm all for exploring a structure that evens out the trade market.
