Deflating is the right word. Hard to understand why a trade like this needs to happen 3 weeks before opening day. Really sours me on the format as well. Blarg.
-
I am not mad at anyone specifically...I am not sure I wouldn’t have hit accept...I am as competitive as the next guy. Just a general displeasure at a trend I find saps my enthusiasm for this format.

When I stared in Ottoneu...at the beginning...these cap space deals happened mid season, and while they were a bit unpalatable...they made sense on both sides. Ow though...I had a league last year with a team over $600 in salary before the season started. This trend is going to push me out of this format.

I find these deals deflating..when they happen so early. I wish you couldn’t trade cap space until closer to the trade deadline. I get if Kay didn’t get the stars he wanted, but why not trade stars for stars...rather than these Stars+Cash for bargains and prospects. I can’t imagine giving up on competing this year so early.

Frankly, I hesitated for a while when I saw the offer given Kay missed the draft last night, and was already trying to move Trout this morning. I get the frustration given the context, and am open to a conversation. I'm not sure if I'm supposed to reject in that spot? I assume if I had, it wouldn't have taken long before Trout was on the move elsewhere. I don't know...

Agreed, there is a real cascade to these dynamics, and it does impact the entire league. I know there was interest in getting the auction behind us, but in hindsight we probably should have tried to back things out and reschedule.

This is where we all start getting screwed because someone forgot it was draft night...awesome.

Commish, gotta end the draft so we can make some TRADES!

Kay Parker and Balls, y'all gonna draft?
-
Hey, just a heads up, I might be a little late to the draft tonight, or in and out for the first little bit of the draft trying to keep up from my phone. Don't wait for me though, and I'll hopefully be online for good by 6:20 or 6:30 PST (or sooner if I'm lucky!). Luckily I only need 8 players!

I set the draft date for March 5th at 9:00 pm EST, and I expect the draft to go between one and two hours. If that date/time is impossible for anyone, fill out the Doodle poll and send me a message. Judging by the poll so far, the best dates look to be March 4th, 5th, 6th, and 8th.
-
Here's the poll: https://doodle.com/poll/vyxdzvvwvy39q9nx
-
I've made a Doodle poll to figure out a draft date, and I set the auction time for 8:00 pm - 10:00 pm central. If those hours can't work for someone, we can adjust the times after we select a date. I expect the draft will only be about an hour, but if you can have those two hours free that would be ideal.
-
As a reminder, you won't be able to cut any players included in any trades made between 11:59 pm January 29th and the cut deadline.

I'm open to other suggestions on making Verbal's team more appealing, since reversing trades obviously isn't a perfect solution.
-
Verbal was unable to continue playing this season, so we'll need to find a new owner for his team. Since the team is in pretty rough shape, I may allow the new owner to reverse some of the trades Verbal made. If anyone knows someone interested in taking over the team, send me a message.

If anyone is interested in Machado at a pre-auction price, I'll take the best player I can afford to keep for him.
-
They only have $327 in salary before cuts and have a decent nucleus. Shouldn’t be a problem in my opinion. We can place an ad at the rorowire league finder chat room and i’ll bet we can find a replacement pretty fast in January. After the FFB season is over.

So, I'm not sure we can count on that Moneyball and Rookies team being claimed on it's own. Thoughts on how to potentially encourage an owner to take it on? Maybe we can offer some salary credits a new owner can use to pay down the salaries on their players to give themselves some more good assets to work with? Other ideas?

$37 Rendon is available. Have gotten a number of offers already, so if you're interested let me know ASAP or it may be too late! Will be looking for a premium return though. Also willing to move guys like Sale, Rizzo, Puig, Turner, Gregorius, Bauer, and maybe even Betts!

OMG - I missed allocation. Really sorry guys. I put it off for too long and then got busy in a classic procrastination disaster story. I am totally IN. Sorry to fumble the ball. I blew it in 3 of my 4 leagues. I am trying to build up this team and start to obsess on BB around January every year.

No biggie guys. I get all the arguments you make, in principle..they are logical. As a relatively new owner in this league, trying REALLY hard to build a contender...it sucked to be the arb outlier...especially when piled upon by someone not in the 'family'. It is just some sour grapes, i guess. I am over it...looking forward to making some moves to improve. Thanks for the well articulated responses.

I'm for whatever got arb don for more teams in any way that isn't obviously nefarious or collusive. Arb not getting done at all is the real problem, like CM said, bc it has pretty wide ranging effects on roster construction and the draft. I don't have a problem with the decision to use a proxy for arb (whether it's how Id've done it or not); I'm just happy arb got done by more teams than would've happened otherwise.
-
With the understanding that having any allocation done would be better than not having it done, I thought Chin was being very helpful recruiting from the Slack community to get our abandoned team to do arbitration, and I didn't think there would be anything wrong with it. If people disagree I'll roll back the allocations made by the Moneyball team, but frankly, if anyone is going to eventually claim that team it needs all the help it can get.
-
I would agree on both sides of this. Its not ideal, but its better than having $0 allocation so Chin did right to at least get some of those arb $'s allocated

I agree it was unilateral without the league's consent, and perhaps that was overstepping things on my end (especially since I'm not commissioner). I agree with that. If the league wants to undo it, fine. I just think the downside of letting those two teams fall significantly further behind, to the benefit of the better teams, was WAY, WAY worse than the alternative (especially since we need to find owners for them). But I'll digress and let the rest of the league weigh in. Didn't mean any harm.

I hear you, I just think you're underestimating the macro effect here. Sure, maybe Stumptown and Hunt should have gotten $2 instead of $1. That's a minor problem. On the flip side, Kay didn't arbitrate at all, which means the rest of the league will have $25 more to spend at auction with no benefit to Kay, a team that's already an 11th place team (though with a few nice pieces). If Moneyball hadn't allocated as well, now that's $50 extra the 10 best teams have, at the expense of the 2 worst.

My take is that carefully thought out arb decisions by a player invested in the league are vital. Quick and hap-hazard ones done by someone with no stake, are just arbitrary. I'd rather have none. As for common place...I have owned at least 4 teams for 6 years in Ottoneu, this is the first time I have seen it. I felt like we had no say in the decision. That's all...not outraged...just a bit disappointed. I am probably alone in that, but thought I should say something.

But I recognize it was a last-minute thing and if the league doesn't like what happened, I guess it's possible to undo it. I did it to try to maintain balance and league health (knowing I would almost certainly get a full $3 allocation personally), but I understand I essentially did so unilaterally. That said, it's common practice accross the ottoneu platform, and I spent a chunk of my day yesterday doing the same for other leagues to help others out as well.

Hmm, well I'm not sure how to answer that. I don't know him personally at all, he's an experience ottoneu player, and he hit me and the other two top 3 finishers with the full max. Everyone has different methodologies I guess. And I disagree completely that they are a terrible idea. Obviously the best scenario is that all 12 existing owners submit arbitration, but that wasn't possible. Arbitration is one of the most important components to a healthy league.

Chin, no offense to your arb recruit...but how do the bottom 4 teams (not including Money) get $2, $2, $2, and $3 in arb and the #4 team and the commish get $1. Stumptown has an easy half dozen huge surplus guys. I think pinch-hitters in arb are a terrible idea....my 2 cents.

I've emailed him and messaged him, but I think he's gone for good. I'll abandon his team.

It looks like Moneyball and Rookies hasn't logged in in a few months. If we are going to need to replace him, probably best to do so sooner than later so the new owner can participate in arbitration?
