So just to be clear, the team that acquires Trout is obligated to drop a shiteton of players to get under the cap, or is this the equivalent of an open auction?
-
At the risk of stepping on Mark’s incredible Trout post, can I return to the prior question? I see Rule VIII(c) saying that there is no salary cap after the end of the MLB season. I don’t see a rule concerning whether you need 40 or fewer players, but don’t see that as so big a deal either way.

ok, seems like i’m the outlier here, so i guess let’s just go for trout fishing in america.

Camargo asked if we think Trout should be “thrown back.” I don’t think it’s sel-fish for someone to get him now, so long as they have cap and roster space to let him filet spot. Whoever reels him in will be on the hook to pay him on an appropriate scale; we don’t need to use the rod to prevent folks from playing the angles. I, for one, am not going to carp about it if someone gets him—the rules shouldn’t change just because he’s a stud, and not say, Tim Salmon, AJ Pollock, or Sid Bream. FIN.
-
i remember a few debatable auctions, like Clint Frazier, where i agreed to give up a guy as much in the spirit of fair play and sportsmanship as anything

and i don’t see it as anyone being penalized. everyone has a fair crack at him during the auction draft.

I don’t think he should be pulled back. Not being able to bid on one player for timing reasons (even Trout) doesn’t strike me as unfair, but Croney or anyone else who may have planned around late season pickups should get the chance. If things hadn’t gotten accelerated, Bob wouldn’t have joined until the off-season anyway. Not that I’d complain if Trout ended up available next year…
-
except he’s also brand new, and as we were just reminded, it’s already tough to get up to speed.

Why are we contemplating penalizing 11 owners because 1 goes on vacation? This happens all the time w/o any adjustments.
-
croney, how would you feel about throwing him back in the player pool so Bob has a fair shot at him next season? i could remove your corresponding cap penalty.

so i think a team should be legal both by salary and numbers until the new round of salary inflation hits. you can be over at that point. does that sound right?

I'll out myself as the prick who posted Trout. I did it with the expectation that if I won the auction, I would need to get back under the salary cap and have bid accordingly.
-
WAR wants a championship, a time machine, and a Sunday morning cappuccino guys.
-
I don't know about roster spot & salary cap legality once the 60 day IL disappears, later in the off season, but the winner of Trout has to make cuts to get under the cap before the end of the season. Danger:Wildman left in a huff after we enforced that a couple of seasons ago.
-
the rules say that an owner needs to have a legal roster at all times, which includes the last day of the season. so that means the trout winner needs to have a legal roster before the penalties drop off.

My vote would be has to be legal in season too. Separately, I wish he weren’t signing until this evening so I could offer him a new contract.
Just to clarify because I think we’ve done it different ways different years, in the off-season we have to be legal by roster spots (no more than 40) but not by salary, right?
-
also, it seems a little rough that Bob prb won’t be able to make a bid for Trout. should we maybe just say he should get thrown back in the player pool for next season?

are we saying the trout auction winner should have a legal roster before the season ends, or are we permitting the owner to have an illegal roster for the last day and a half?

As a palate cleanser, I want to give massive credit to both WAR and Framber for succeeding in such a challenging season. Whenever I’m tempted to blame failure on injuries, I have to remind myself that not only did everyone get hit, but the league leader lost literally Mike Trout. Whoever wins, well done!

WNSS, the new owner is the guy who wanted your team last year but Dave awarded it to you because you responded 10 minutes before he did. He is a friend of mine and Chuck’ and when Chuck texted him this am he responded immediately. It was that quick. I am sorry it went south for you. Youve had your say. If you dont like us, our commish, or the format, just move out and on. Youre speaking but nobody is listening.
-
You lined up a new owner between 1 AM and 9 AM this morning? I guess if you say so . . .
-
Just one owners opinion but i think Dave has been a awesome commish i think he has always done what he thinks is best for the league and when i came in as a new owner if i had a question he always tried to help me out if i asked . i made mistakes just like anyone does when they try a new format for the first time so i hope this uproar is done and finished it has been a very competitive year and congrats to the winner on having a great year. Thanks Chuck

i had hoped to end all the drama till after the season, but i think we need to just resolve this and move on. matt, when you quit (and you said unequivocally that you did), i lined up a new owner who agreed to take the team. the new owner is a friend of chuck's and acuna's. so there's no taking it back now. and it wouldn't be good for you to just stay in the league out of pure spite. not for you, not for me, and definitely not for the league.

I do remember when WAR came in. I believe I estimated that that team was 2nd to the worst, at the time. Can't remember if it was the former team "Big Country Blue Ballers" or another team. As noted, I took an 11th place team all the way to 2nd place in my inaugural season. There was plenty of fluke in that, although I was practically gifted expensive versions of Posey, Harper, Greinke and Rendon, all coming off injury or slumps in 2016. Never turn your back on expensive vets.
-
Back to the race... made a huge strategic mistake by stacking starters yesterday. I could have easily pushed it to today where I had Suarez, Disco and Megill going, and now Houston has added Framber. Could easily be a 100+ point difference. I thought about it even with the first 3 but with the 4th added it would have been a no brainer. Oh well, made lots of mistakes this season.
-
Go away.

let’s please not ruin the end of the season and a fun race between Framer and WAR. good luck guys, and congrats to everyone on a fun and competitive season!

Having given it further consideration, I've actually decided not to quit because I think me staying in this league would make you angry now, and that would make me happy.
-
Lol nice work just lying about some shit in an attempt to make me feel bad about not grasping the rules more quickly. You're a real quality character!

That all said, I have found this league extremely well run and welcoming throughout, both from the commissioner's standpoint and in general. I'm sorry you didn't feel the same way Winker, but I also don't want the commissioner or everyone else who makes this league what it is to feel like the effort put in is not appreciated, because it very much is.
-
Just for history's sake, last year was my third season, after I suffered through two atrocious seasons where all my attempts to fix my terrible team fell flat. Even as late as last year I was still figuring out some of the nuances of the rules--not realizing that catcher games were hard-capped instead of soft-capped like IPs nearly cost me the title when I had a 30 point Salvador Perez game wiped out.
-
What's a real shame here is that when I posted that first message, I wasn't 100% sure I was going to quit, just was thinking about it. Fortunately your unapologetic dickhead behavior in response to that and my subsequent posts has made that decision easy for me. My advice: let someone else be Commissioner. You're not cut out for this.

Rusty (Framber) inherited a pretty bad team and still came in 2nd his first season.

when i said plenty of people have figured it out, WAR won the league in his first season last year, and Vlad has been a top owner since he started last season as well. but thank you for the specifics—we’ll make sure to emphasize those things to whoever takes over for you.

Unfortunately Dudley seems to have made it clear that beginners aren't welcome here, so if I do try Ottoneu again, it will another league.
-
Now of course I'm a committed Ottoneu nerd. I can't imagine doing fantasy baseball in any other format. Winker I think you raise some valid points. While people always come and go, the core of our league has been together for awhile and I think as a group we do tend to forget what it's like to be new to this. I hope you try it again -- if not here then another Ottoneu league. It is very challenging to build a competitive roster, but that's what makes it fun. Thanks for speaking up.

The Ottoneu format definitely takes some getting used to. When I joined this league four years ago, I was fortunate to personally know a couple of the other owners. So I was comfortable going to them to ask about rules and strategy. Even with that, it took me a good two months into my first season to really understand how to value players and figure out what I wanted to do with my roster. Just navigating the site was tough for me initially.

All of this said, your response of "plenty of people have figured it out" is a pretty dickish thing to say. That essentially reads as "I'm sorry you're dumb, that's not my fault." I did figure it out eventually, but ultimately I found that this league was not an enjoyable experience to be a part of, and that is on you as the Commissioner for failing to make it fun for a new owner. Maybe try not to get defensive when someone gives you constructive criticism next time?

To name a few things: I did not realize it was not a 2 catcher league. I didn't know that I had to leave money available at the auction for free agents. Early on I did not have a great grasp of how things worked with the salary cap in-season (as far as cutting guys and taking on extra cash, etc.). There were house rules that were stated once, but, as far as I knew, not written down anywhere that I could reference. I didn't realize that SPs could only accumulate stats if in SP roster spots, etc.

Agree to disagree I guess? I wasn't trying to start a fight or play the blame game. I'm just explaining my experience as I experienced it. It's not that I couldn't (or didn't) figure it out, but it was A LOT to absorb at the start, and I definitely made mistakes that hurt my team because of rules I missed or misunderstood, and maybe that just bothers me more than others? I didn't know what questions to ask, so it was hard to know what to reach out about, etc.

thanks for the follow up on your decision, but plenty of other people have figured it out. we’ve always said to reach out with any questions, i directed you to some articles, the slack channel, and the surplus calculator. framber even sent a league-wide warning a couple of months ago that some ppl needed to get it in gear to reach the coupon thresholds.
