hi everyone, you should please message me with your arb coupon allocations. please do so before arbitration begins. Bob--you can use $20 to reduce your players' salaries. You can spend all $20 on one guy, or spread it around. The most you can reduce a player to is $1.

Chuck, there would be no direct incentive to reach caps, however I make the argument that it really doesn't hurt competition much in a points league like this one. If we want to increase competition, we should encourage everyone to be involved in FA acquisition throughout the year and not worry so much about daily roster moves. That said, a best practice is for everyone to work on having full lineups, checking in on a weekly basis and replacing injured players with new free agents.
-
War Again congrats on doing a great job and winning the league you did a awesome job running your team. PS Ronald McDonald Phly Chapter Chuck

have a question if we get rid of the coupon system next year what is the incentive for teams to meet the innings limit of 1500 we already had a few teams that did not qualify for the coupon this year . Thanks Chuck

Great charity, and great season WAR! Donating to a local Philly equivalent today.
-
that sounds good—we’ll give Bob the full coupon for this year and vote on whether to keep it going forward. i’ll circulate a survey monkey to vote on keeping it and whether to switch to a hard cap on loans.

I agree with WAR about the $50 loan cap working and a hard cap being a good addendum. I was involved in a trade this year that we explicitly discussed it would have gone over if not for the cap and had to renegotiate to avoid it. I see trades in other leagues with like $200 loans for a 50-100 prospect, and that doesn’t seem fun to me. Also open to the good will gesture to Bob

Let's ditch the idea of a 2nd vote. Both Dave and you are already against it and there are plenty of reasons not to mess with a rule that is currently being applied to this season.
-
after thinking it over, i’ll vote to abolish it both for this year and going forward. for one thing, Bob would only get $5, and i’d rather not put him at an immediate disadvantage.

Great charity, WAR. Was happy to donate. And congratulations on an outstanding season! I’m strongly against abolishing coupons this year. Didn’t we already have a discussion about it? I don’t love the idea of changing rules after playing to maximize under those rules. I’m open to (maybe even leaning in favor of) abolishing it in future years, though one rationale I didn’t see Framber address was to prevent prospect hoarding

I'd be okay with ditching the coupon system forward, but a couple of concerns: (1) Why would we undo it for this year when we played with it in place? I would be fine with treating new owners like Bob as though they met thresholds though. (2) I think the fact that nobody has loaned more than $49 since 2017 doesn't show an overcorrection, it shows the system is working. If we drop coupons going forward, I would propose in its place a flat ban on net loans of over $50 in either direction.
-
6. The original inventor of the rule, a guy named Joe Cataranziti on Slack, has since reversed on his own idea, calling it a bad idea.
-
5. The original proponent for this system, Danger:Wildman, is now gone from the league
-
4. (or 3a.) This intent may have been misguided too as all teams have the opportunity to incur big loans via trade. The field was level to begin with.
-
3. Another reason for it was to throttle the huge loans from trading for hi priced players, but this has turned out to be an overcorrection as no team has loaned more than $49 since 2017.
-
2. (or 1a.) The original intent to keep bottom teams engaged was likely misguided. Disengaged bottom teams do not affect standings in points league, unlike roto leagues.
-
1. A major reason for it, to keep bottom teams engaged, has proven incorrect. Four teams in the bottom half of the standings failed to reach the floors this yr. Previous yrs showed similar results. This is the opposite of leveling the field.
-
I propose we abolish the coupon system. Discussed it w/ Dave and I think we'll do this in 2 votes, one to abolish in future, second to forgo this yr's coupon amount. There are several key arguments against the coupon system:
-

Thanks, all! I was worried it was slipping away when my team started 0 for 6 yesterday and Ohtani led off with a home run. Let's go for the Minneapolis crisis nursery (https://www.crisisnursery.org/) or a local equivalent this year. Looking forward to a busy offseason and another exciting season next year.

Congratulations, WAR. Job well done. In fact, really impressed with the top 4 teams and how tight it was.

I concur, great job WAR. A worthy repeat champ. Better luck for the rest of us, next year.
-
Great season, all!! Congrats, WAR (and great run, Framber)!! WAR, let us know where we’re donating…
-
Remarkable to see the top two separated by less than 100 and the top four separated by less than 400. There may be even more competitive Ottoneu points leagues out there, but I wouldn’t bet on it.
-
Congratulations, WAR! You’ve had a tremendous run, winning back to back! I’d be happy to make a contribution to your charity of choice.

Another 1B rich draft emerging next year. Let's see... if Vesia and Knebel are both inserted into their respective games and are forced to go 3 batters by MLB rules, and give up 3 HR's each, I think I got a shot.
-
I deserve a brownie point for starting all those end of season auctions. Fooled y'all as I only wanted Eugenio and Puk. And I'm pretty sure Shakespeare wrote a play with a Eugenio and Puk.
-
WAR cruising to a championship and stepping on everyone's bids in the process. I believe Croney did the same thing 2 years ago.
-
Looking at the bids, I don’t think I was the only one with that idea… just the only one who forgot he needed $1 per open roster spot and therefore bid more than he should have!
-
Sneaky bastard. But honestly, Mountie doing that is probably just as well.
-
There's also the separate cap-related rule that you have to have at least $1 of free cap space for every open roster spot under 40, so roster spots also play into the cap indirectly that way.
-
Sorry, realizing I missed the other part of Cronenworthy's question. The rules say that "A roster of 22 major-league players capable of filling out a starting lineup as defined below shall be maintained regardless of any games started, games played or innings limits" I was not aware of that rule and don't know that it's ever been enforced, but that would be the only minimum roster size that even might apply.
-
Obviously not my plaice to decide, but from my perch, I agree that focusing just on salary is a red herring—not trying to be crabby about it, but I do think we’ve required folks to have 40 or fewer players during the off-season in the past (though my memory shouldn’t be the sole basis for doing things)—and I think a shark could gain an unfair advantage by adding injured Marlins if we didn’t have a cap. By the way, I strongly recommend Squid Game on Netflix. I’ll clam up now.
-
Oh, now I see you were agreeing with the salary cap too. Sorry, responded too fast.

Yes, WAR. The post-last-day questions are what I was asking (although I think I was providing an answer on the salary cap, and asking about the number of roster spots).

I think everyone agreed you have to get under the cap post-Trout signing. I (and I think Vlad too) was asking the separate question of whether in the off-season, when the salary cap doesn't apply, if the roster spot limit still does, since all the extra 60 day IL spots will go away.
-
To me a legal roster is one that's sufficiently under the cap, whether you have 40 players or 30. I started the auction Thursday assuming I would have to get under the cap if I won, but could go into the final day with far fewer than 40 players.
