here’s a link to the survey monkey for the loan cap proposal

Just for round numbers, I propose that a team cannot have more than $50 in net incoming loans at any given time (so a hard cap of $450), with no limit on outgoing loans.
-
also, just a reminder—Philly and Acuña, please complete arbitration. Muskies already promised to do it. deadline is 11/14, this coming Sunday.

before i set up the survey, is the proposal to only cap total incoming loans at $49? (viz, up to and including $49)? but no cap on outgoing loans?

Yeah, I'm not sure a cap would bar OPL participation. I'm arguing no cap is better than a cap. We've had, in effect, a cap for the last 4 years due to the coupon rule. The two years previous to that, no one won the league in an uncompetitive fashion by having $200 of net loans. Again, I see this as a solution searching for a problem that has seemingly never existed in this league. Maybe Dave or older members can relate a situation pre-2016 where extreme loans were used to cut off competition.
-
Also, it's not clear to me that a loan cap would bar OPL participation. The rule says "Teams in leagues with custom rules including but not limited to arbitration/inflation adjustments, any kind of coupon system and/or extended MiLB-only rosters are ineligible for OPL" And then Niv suggested that he would have to make calls on leagues being in or out, which suggests it isn't any custom rules. https://community.ottoneu.com/t/2022-opl-signups/10200.
-
It's probably really just a personal preference as to what people find more fun--for me it's having to manage within the limits of at least some hard cap, and the ability that leaves to spare some thought for the future even in the midst of a pennant run. Obviously if the majority feels otherwise that's fine, but that's where I'm coming from.
-
I think the loan cap increases rather than decreases competition. If tons of incoming loans (and the complete tear-down of future value that comes with it) become table stakes for competing, it's much easier to decide early on that a team doesn't have a shot. And increased roster turnover/cuts isn't really forced either, since the team that loaded up can make trades in the offseason pre-cut. Check out Trout's history--traded 4 times in the last 6 offseasons (and once in-season).
-
Really not sure what was wrong with the rules we have been playing with think it was a very competitive league last year a few teams could have one the league think the top two only pulled away in the standings the last month they did a great job in managing there teams. I will go with what the majority wants but if it is not broke why are we trying to change the rules just to have teams qualify for OPL really not interested in changing the rules for that reason . but i’m with Rusty. let’s just go back to standard ottoneu rules and let ppl play OPL if they want.

i think since Harmon has seconded WAR’s proposal on capping loans, we need to put it to a vote.

Can you spell out what's wrong with high net loans? They allow owners to go all in, causing more competition (a good thing) while also forcing them to drop high price players in the off season causing more player churn (another good thing).
-
Yes, the proposal is that a team cannot take on more than $50 in net loans for the season, which I think is effectively how the coupon penalties were functioning (actually a little less restrictive, since the proposal uses net instead of gross). I had also suggested teams not be allowed more than $50 in net outgoing loans, but it sounds like there's less support for that, and that can probably be abandoned without a vote.
-
Wait a minute, is this a proposal for a $50 limit on net loans, total, for the season? If so, I'm strongly against that. I thought people were suggesting the limit on a single trade.
-
Splitting into two trades wouldn't evade a cap on a team's total net loans. In terms of throwing in a $10 player, that's true, but I don't view that as a problem--in the same way you can recover cap by cutting players, it's fine to recover it by trading players with dead(ish) contracts. And in terms of there not having been many such trades, I think the coupon system incentives prevented it--I've had multiple trades fall through because of the $50 penalty.
-
I don't think we need a cap on loans. First, it's easily skirted. Trading for 2 high priced stars for 2 prospects? Just split it into 2 trades. Second, if a trade has a loan over $50 just throw in some junk player at $10 to balance it. Furthermore, in 2017 when I joined there was only 1 trade with a loan over $50, it was $56. In 2016, none. A cap is a solution searching for a problem. The standard Ottoneu rules have proven to be pretty durable and not in need of modification.
-
but it seems like there is sufficient difference of opinion for us to put it up to another vote.

the high dollar loans also help restore competitive balance. a team that takes on a lot of loans will by definition have to make a lot of cuts.

i personally don’t like banning loans. capping the loans makes it virtually impossible to trade high dollar guys like Trout.

I see no merit to a cap on outgoing loans as that just punishes rebuilding teams. I think a ban on incoming loans is sufficient. But I'm okay with whatever the consensus is.
-
I agree with WAR on the loans.
-
Can I propose a follow-up rule change that we discussed earlier this offseason as a potential replacement from the coupons, specifically, banning teams from having net loans of more than $50 in either direction?

Well put -- or at least that's pretty much how I feel about this issue. Related: I'd like to make a motion that Franimal be referred to as "Mr. Holdout" on this board going forward. All in favor?
-
Sorry, I have my message notifications turned off. I'm the last vote. I think the coupons are fun, and in general I think OPL is kind of dumb. But I don't want my idea of "fun" to limit what people can and can't do. Let's get rid of them next year.
-
the vote is currently 5-6 in favor of not keeping the coupon, so the holdout’s vote will be decisive. if it’s 6-6, we’ll keep it.

so i guess ignore the deadline, but please vote as soon as possible if you are the holdout.

Thank you, Chuck. I agree it’s important, and there’s no reason we need to know by a specific date. The votes are anonymous, so I don’t know who hasn’t voted yet. as far as i know, everyone is returning.

Think if we can we need every owner to vote think this vote is important is there a reason we have to know by a certain date and if the owner that has not voted are we sure he is going to be in the league next tear . Thanks Chuck

still waiting on the final vote. let’s keep it open through 10/29, which is a full week. if we don’t hear back by then, we’ll just go with the result from the 11 cast ballots.

"ROSTERS - Each team shall during the regular season maintain a roster of 22 major-league players that can fill out a starting lineup as defined below. The remaining 18 roster spots can be used for reserves, consisting of both major and minor leaguers."
-
Chuck, you are correct. Only the top 6 qualify for OPL. However, none of us qualify for 2022 due to coupon allocations this off season. The top 6 next season would qualify for 2023. Note, I give 4 arguments for banning coupons below that have nothing to do with OPL
-
There's already a rule that you have to keep an active roster of mlb starting players throughout the season. The commissioner can demand that the team who cuts all his regular non keepers to acquire mlb starters or toss that team from the league. This is in the general Ottoneu League rules.
-
the tally is now 4-4, with 4 ppl still needing to vote. if it’s a tie i guess we should keep the status quo. please vote!

I am voting to keep it. I get the arguments against it, but on balance I think it’s still worth having the encouragement to field a full roster. My worry is absent this or something like it, there’s no reason for a team out of contention not to cut every player who isn’t a keeper and just fill the roster with prospects.
-
Just checking before i vote so if teams want to they can compete in the OPL for 2022 i might be wrong but i think the only teams that can join the OPL for 2022 have to have finished in the top 6 in the standings last year . PS Can the teams that played in the OPL last year please check to see if that is there rules to compete for 2022 it looks like they waived that rule for 2021 last years teams. Thanks Chuck

I've been arguably this league's biggest coupon backer, but it's time. Too many compelling reasons to do away with it, starting with OPL participation.
-
i’m voting to do away with it. i’d like to allow ppl the freedom to participate in the OPL.
