Happy Opening Day to everyone. Good luck this season.
-
If you can, please take a moment to put together your picks in those three categories. If I don’t hit a majority of the league in the survey, I’ll scrap it and won’t bother you guys.
-
No problem. I'm glad you got them. I'll find another fun gift for this season's winner.
-
Cards received Robert! Thank you - this was a great idea.
-
Thanks all. I hate my team and blame all of you. :)
-
Thanks, everyone, for a great auction. Best of luck to all of you.
-
Just an FYI: As with last season, I'll be getting this year's champion a small gift for winning the league playoff. Team Dark Overlord has been sent an unopened box of 1988 Topps Big Series 1 baseball cards for taking the 2022 crown. Best of luck to all of you this season.
-
If it doesn't take too much of your time—after the draft—I'd like to do a quick, fun, preseason survey. By Thursday, could you PM me answers to these questions: 1. Based on the current roster, which team do you predict will win this year's championship? 2. Which three teams do you predict will place at the season's end? (No need to rank first, second, third.) Of last season's last-place teams (in their divisions), which will generally have the best season (Speedsters, Gurriel, Context)?
-
Happy draft day everyone!
-
Ha yep. Thanks for the convo y'all, really appreciate it -n

Uh, that was a lot simpler than I thought. It's done.

Just add the Hawks as a commissioner and I'll take care of it. Thanks everyone - n

Done! Niv, can you restrict Bauer for us? I don't want to mess it up.
-
I'm in favor too, sorry for the late response.
-
I think we only need one more vote for this to pass. If we don’t get it here before the auction, we can bring it up in the auction room and see if there’s another affirmative vote. Affirmative so far: Hawken, Daytime, Obi, Gurriel, Overlord and me. See you all Monday!

any particular manager can make whatever choice it wants to regarding bauer. from a league-wide perspective, bauer's unique combation of known talent and ambiguous playing status makes him unlike any other player in the player universe. we have to make a choice collectively aside from any moral misgivings we have about bauer because its just completely unknowable what kind of MLB production he will produce this year without making a bet on a rape investigation. - n

can we please stop? the moral relativism is exhausting. trevor bauer is on MLB's restricted list. ozuna and chapman are not. put bauer on our restricted list until he is removed from the MLB restricted list. it's cut and dried.
-
trevor bauer may or may not play professional baseball in the next month. comparing him to ozuna is not particularly compelling. making moral comparisons based on legal status is problematic, but we don't need to unpack that - n

If I nominate Ozuna on Monday, do I get him for $1? Legally speaking, with an arrest, he’s an even more terrible person. (And, no, I’m not nominating Ozuna.)
-
fwiw, I do think if the reasoning is "because of restricted status," then he should just be in the player pool. For me, this is about him being an unambiguously terrible human.
-
How about this? I pledge to not roster Trevor Bauer now or ever. Y'all can do what you want.
-
i'm in favor
-
We have five affirmative votes to put Bauer's auction status on ice until MLB reaches a resolution in his case. Please vote on this before Monday's auction. We need seven votes on one side to pass/reject this proposal.
-
That makes sense. I'm now a yes vote. As an aside: I had another league where Trevor Bauer went for $10 this past week.
-
ok i don't care about wanting him in the league or not, i think i've made that clear. its about valuing him. and i'm fine putting him on the restricted list until there is some certainty other than these quiet extensions of him being on the restricted list.

If it’s truly only about not knowing how to value him, then I think that is a legitimate argument. I raised the issue only because “generally not wanting him in the league” was given as the first reason to do this. That was the only reason is objected. I’d say, if the votes are there, we should simply restrict him until MLB makes its decision. After that decision — a suspension of 60 games, 80 games, a year, whatever — owners can assess risk and make their own decision.
-
we have no idea when he's going to come back and where he's going to pitch and the risk/reward trade-off is as a result very different from TJS (which has a timeline) or other cases where a suspension was doled out and served. he is in a weird limbo that just makes him impossible to value. it again has nothing to do with making a big deal of how much of a bad guy we think he is.

this is niv (the last few were chad). i really don't think this is a slippery slope. bauer keeps having his stay on the commissioner list extended indefinitely. your point is taken that he may come back, but just taking him off the board for 2022 for this league has nothing to do with him being a bad person or us saying "wow he's a bad person" - it is all about the fact that there is more uncertainty for bauer than anyone else - its very distinct from any other example.

And I definitely think Hawken should write about this issue for RotoGraohs, if he hasn’t already. It’s extremely interesting, and I think it would lead to a great discussion. After seeing Hawken’s argument about why we should restrict (outside the fact he is a bad guy), that definitely makes a very good point. I’m still against the restriction— as I said, I think it’s a slippery slope that eventually could be applied in many bad ways — but I love the debate.
-
But Hawken’s point is well-taken, and I’m glad I’m in a league where people care about this sort of stuff.
-
Alrodis Chapman fired a gun into a wall. Police watched Ozuna attack his spouse. They both returned. Bauer will be ruled eligible at some point. He would sue MLB into oblivion if he were banned without a criminal charge. Now, could MLB suspend him for a year? Sure. Would teams refuse to sign him after, and Bauer is playing in Mexico in 2024? Sure. Id laugh my rear ended off. That’s a risk an Ottoneu owner would have to take. I think we, as fantasy owners, should stay out of it.
-
I think I'd be in favor of waiting for the league to conclude its investigation and decide on a punishment, if any, before putting him up for bidding. I don't really have interest in him either way, though, so I'm good with whatever the league decides.
-
If anything, having the idiot Bauer available makes the league even more realistic. The Dodgers have had to sign players and make roster decisions with Bauer’s issue in limbo. They might even release him at some point. At that time, other MLB teams would be faced with the decision whether to sign a piece of trash and face backlash from fans.
-
I don't feel that strongly, so I'll let it go after this, but he's not like a TJS pitcher or literally any other situation ever. He could be back in April! He could be back never! If he got TJS today we would know he'd back back next year some time. I get your point but I don't think he's really like any other case I can think of. Has any other player been stuck in limbo like this for almost a year with no clarity on next steps in sight?

To be clear I'm not saying he should be restricted cause he's morally problematic (as you said, so are lots of others) but because his situation is uniquely unclear. We have no idea if/when he'll pitch again and I don't think "trying to guess how the league and dodgers will handle this" is supposed to be the kind of thing that influences how a league plays out, possibly over multiple years. There's not really an analog to this situation.

this is niv, so maybe a double yes vote from hawken, but i'm also in favor of just putting him on the restricted list until november 1.

question ahead of our draft - two of my leagues decided to put Bauer on the restricted list, making him ineligible to be picked up, with a plan to reinstate after the season (pending anything that might happen in the meantime). The purpose was both generally not wanting him in the league and to avoid someone "profiting" off his actions. Curious if this league would like to do that, as well. Think it's better than having him available as a FA. (this is Chad BTW)
