I heard they might let Rzepczynski start though. Wouldn't that mess up his value for you?

Dude, I can't believe you cut him! I'm still pretty high on Rasmus, and am eager to see if Toronto will help him find his power stroke again.

Can't believe I initially paid $22 for Rasmus at auction...

I'll trade you Villanueva, Collins, O'Flaherty, Ceda AND McGee for Rasmus. How's that?

Probably, NL Central beats AL East any day, although Central isn't quite NL West.

I guess it's good that Rzepczynski is going to STL?
-
I hear John Mozeliak already made it to the front of that line. I'll settle for Edwin Jackson moving from the Cell to Busch (and the NL Central).

Yeah, probably up for good this time. Why did the Nationals want Gomes?

Nationals just acquired Jonny Gomes, thinking this means a Yonder Alonso callup?

Just saying, Bonifacio's a free agent and getting significant playing time (and his walk rate has gotten to acceptable levels). I'd love for someone to pick him up!

Yeah that was horrible. Pretty nasty piece of gamesmanship by Japan in the closing minutes of extra time

Yes, I agree, but Grudge shouldn't circumvent the market for the potential benefit of another owner.

I'm not sure if I agree with the premise that everything should be determined by the market though. I don't think owners should be prevented from selling their players at a below-market price simply because of an oversight or laziness or something.
-
You know, I was going to argue with you, but you are right Joe. I am sure that neither team had the intention of pulling one over on the league but I think that we should not make a practice of allowing this sort of deal, which is more like a "favor."
-
That?s the other weird element here: if Pena has no value, why does OMG want to pay $2 instead of getting him in auction for $1? Ostensibly the answer is that he might lose the bid. That suggests that Pena does have value and shouldn?t be given away.

Giving a player away for nothing but $1 cap ($2 salary) is giving an unfair advantage to the receiving owner who isn?t paying a price determined by the market. In a competitive environment, why would Grudge want to give that extra 2% to OMG?
Plakata on
July 16, 2011 3:24 PM

But if Grudge suspects that there is value to Pena - which he should, an owner wants him ?then he should trade him to the highest bidder, or if he can?t get an offer, cut him and allow the market to sort it out.

Cap and roster space have value, yes. Roster space can be achieved by simply cutting Pena. That leaves the cap hit.

I mean, maybe Grudge did not ask around enough about Pe?a (I might have traded an actual player from my roster for him) but he also might prefer to fill the roster spot with someone in the free agent pool or an unsigned 2011 draftee
-
cap space can be an asset, I dunno
-
It works if you assume Pena has no value, but OMG wants him, meaning he has at least some value in our league (determined by demand, not performance). So that means you?re trading something of value for nothing, which certainly sounds like an unfair trade

I find it to be an odd trade too.

It does set a difficult precedent, but the players who are a significant worry for this sort of trade (Pujols) are out of the price range for that to be viable, and since they have significant value in a trade (Pena doesn't really), different situation

I guess I don't have a problem with it?it's just an odd-looking deal.

Although I suppose it's unlikely a contender would have $60 lying around to throw at Pujols in September.

It just looks odd, since you won the auction on him (bidding $4) just 3 days earlier. My worry is not Pena specifically, but I do want to point out the precedent this sets for doing the same with high-production players in September.

Gets me out of Pena's contract. If I cut Pena, no guarantee someone else picks him up off of waivers or out of free agency, so I'm stuck with the 1$ cap penalty possibly for quite a while.
