That makes sense. In retrospect, I guess the best strategy was to get to 1499 with RPs and then go for one last start. A start worth about 25 IP and 75 Ks.

I think it continues to count the rest of the game in which the pitcher took you over 1500IP. Lots of leagues with IP limits work like that, the rest of the day when you go over the limit counts.

1500 1/3 innings for my team? Figured it would be a hard stop at 1500.

Per Niv, all roster limits and cap space limits do not apply during the offseason.

I don't think you'll be able to make trades if you have more than 40 guys on your roster, but outside of that, I believe you are correct.

Yep. There's no rule against it, and it doesn't hinder your ability to participate in the offseason. Salary caps, etc don't apply.

I like the "scoreless outing within two after the fifth" idea. Simple to track, good proxy for leverage, plus it doesn't give credit for the slam-dunk 3-run hold/save.
Bunt Cake on

Why after the 5th? A relief pitcher who came in because the starter tweaked a hammy in the 2nd and pitched 4 scoreless did a pretty dang good job too.
Quasi Muto on
September 25, 2011 10:58 PM

I'd even be fine with just awarding a flat four points for any scoreless relief appearance after the fifth in a game in which the margin is 2 runs or less
-
Relief wins are problematic but I think it would be fair to give four points for one. Maybe just if it's a scoreless outing
-
I suggested to Niv using Shutdowns/Meltdowns, but those use WPA, which uses leverage, which uses park effects, which changes year to year, so anything WPA based is out I think.

Yeah, something more sophisticated than saves/holds would be nice. I know it's just a proxy for leverage, but still.

for keeping it tied, I mean

Kinda dumb that you get no extra points whenever a reliever enters a tie game

In this league does any player have a more checkered transaction history than Delmon Young?
-
yeah, didn't mean shut down. skipping starts down the stretch because the Phillies clinched a playoff spot

Cliff Lee?

Was probably dumb on my part but I was afraid of Lee being shut down (didn't happen) and Braun's calf injury (not nearly as damaging as CarGo's wrist injury or Holliday's finger injury). I guess time will tell.
-
I guess you guys might find this interesting and no harm in putting it out there now: in mid-August I had a deal to send Wil Myers, Derek Holland, Felipe Paulino and Lance Lynn+$14 for Lee/Braun/Uggla/Morse but backed out at the last minute
-
I was being sarcastic. Like I said, I think Mike made the smart choice, though I wonder if some earlier moves would have kept him close all season. I would not have advocated trading high quality pieces for a long-shot, last minute bid.

Flags fly forever, but when you've got a slim chance to win, don't sacrifice the future for it. It only hurts that much worse when you fall short.

I think you made a smart decision not to sacrifice the future for a shot at first place Mike. Could you have won? Possibly. But you've set your team up very nicely to be competitive going forward.

Fly balls are better for your overall offensive numbers, but not actually good for your BABIP or your batting average.
Quasi Muto on
September 19, 2011 8:00 PM

Very, very few hitters keep a FB% above 40 and keep 300+ BABIPs, from 2002-present, only Ryan Raburn and Kevin Youkilis have a higher BABIP with a similar/higher FB%, if you set the cutoff at 1000 PAs. Fly balls are bad for your BABIP.
Quasi Muto on

I agree that the BABIP is a tad high, "insane" might be a bit of an exaggeration though. Should settle in around .265/.340/.460
-
League 112 looks to be very close as well. You can look at most of them by simply changing the 107 in our league url to a number between 000 and about 150, I think.

I played Aceves in Pick Six today. 20 pts out of the RP slot! Got lucky in picking which game of the doubleheader he'd appear in though. At least I'm finding some silver lining to this Red Sox collapse!
-
Thanks for the feedback guys. One idea to incentivize the other finishing spots would be an ongoing points tally that we track for the life of the league. For example: 1st = 10, 2nd = 7, 3rd = 5, 4th = 3, 5th = 2, 6th = 1, 7th-12th = 0.
-
Bad park, BABIP is insane for the batted ball profile. Good walk rates and doesn't swing and miss much, but that park is very pitcher friendly. Fly ball hitters aren't great there

I agree it was likely the prudent choice, but I think you had a legitimate shot of winning. I think by August it may have been too late to make a move, but maybe another early season trade would have kept closer and in it longer.

Also, Jacob, why no love for Duda? I appreciate the comment--you might have helped keep bids down--but he looks like a solid young OF3/OF4 to me. Did you see the ISOs he put up in triple A?
-
finishing 2nd vs. finishing 3rd or 5th or wherever.
-
I think you probably made the right choice. One thing to keep in mind for next year might be to incentivize finishing second and third. There were times when I considered doing some sort of fire sale because I wasn't sure what value to place on...
-
Anyone think I made the wrong decision back in early August when I decided to settle for 3rd place and focus on next year? Felt like I didn't have enough elite starting pitching to make a run at it, nor enough prospects to go shopping for some.
-
The full-season 5x5 league I'm in has had a run-away winner since late May. The post ASB draft also has a pretty clear winner.
